Panning and Blow Out

Image

Image
Creating a blow out effect simply means capturing a lot of light in a single shot. this can be done by taking a picture outside during the day or in a bright room and turning the ISO on a camera up to a high number. one could also do this by using meter by using a very dim middle gray but using a high ISO would probably be the best way.
Taking a panning picture is much more complicated. panning is taking a picture of a clear subject while capturing the movement around them. mine, however, has blur in the subject but a proper picture should show all sorts of blur and movement everywhere but the subject. to create this look one must turn their shutter speed up to give the camera time to capture the picture. adjusting the apeture is also neccesary to do this. i couldve created a better job by turning down the iso or going in a darker room and holding the camera more still by a tripod. this was one of the most difficult tricks to use due to the amount of practice and adjustments needed to perfect this trick.

Shutter Speed

Image
Image
Image
Shutter speed is another tool one can use to create different/unique pictures. Shutter speed captures the light to slowly create a picture. to do this one has to have a dark room with mininum light. your camera's shutter speed has to be increased to make the camera take longer to take the picture. and the ISO also has to be increased to help add lighting. using additional controled light helps too. the double image effect was create from a hand held flash light. learning and using this trick was fun and everyone should learn this tool to become a better photographer. one should always remember to not mix up ISO with aperature, the ISO will add light just as aperature but the aperature will mess with the depth of the picture as well which will blur more of the background. My favorite picture would have to be the one with the three subjects looking down at themselves looking back at them. it creates a feeling of surrealism that was created in our living world rather than a brush or computer.

Aperture

Image
Image
Aperture is the size of the hole or "pupil" of the camera. the difference in sizes determines the focus of the subject and background. the smaller the hole, the wider the shot. the picture on top is an example of a small aperture with a higher F-stop because with a smaller hole, less light comes in to blur the picture giving the photographer a high depth of field. the bottom picture is an example of a bigger aperture with a smaller F-stop, bigger hole means more light comes in and blurs much of the background but gives the photographer a macro shot.

ISO

ISO Flash

Image
ISO 50

ISO 400

Image
ISO 5000

ISO is the tool on ones camera that allows a photographer to capture more light while avoiding using flash. on top, flash was used to show the subject in the dark but completely dimmed and dulled out the christmas lights behind her while the ISO used the light from the christmas lights to enhance the light shown in the picture without flash. from picture 2 to picture 4 the ISO was turned up from 50 to 5000 and the difference in lighting is hugely different even though all three pictures were taken in a dark room with only the christmas lights as a light. using ISO is much better than flash due to iso will capture colors and lights as opposed to flash. however using a fast ISO can cause some graininess in some pictures

Flash

ImageFlash can be useful in some situations but not all. some pictures often look better taken in the dark with little to no excess light. the pros and cons of flash are as followed:
Pros:
A) flash will elimate all blur in the picture.
B) flash will also brighten and show all aspects of the subject.

Cons:
A) Flash dulls the picture by elimating other lights and colors
B) It can also add red eye and show defects in skin.
C) Flash causes the background to extremely darken or be pitch black.
D) It also causes glare from any glass that may end up in the shot.

Flash can be a useful tool in the midday hours or during twilight hours. it can also be useful when the subject appears TOO dark to even see and metering and ISO fails.

Flash is NOT useful when one wants to see the background or has colored lights showing. flash also takes away shadows from everything around the subject.
Image
The Picture above demonstrates how using flash would be a poor choice. Although the subject is the sitting sphere, the colors around the ball add on to the pictures. flash would have elimated the colors around the ball.

Metering

ImageImage light metering tells the camera how much light one wants to capture in his/her picture. by selecting ones middle gray (point of focus) the camera learns how much light is needed in the picture. in the top photo, the screen is selected as a middle gray so anything darker then the screen will decrease in light which is why the girl in the photo hardly comes out. while in the bottom photo her skin tone is selected as the middle gray so anything of or brighter then then her skin will show while anything darker will not. this trick is very helpful for taking pictures in the dark without using flash, and also in the daylight for capturing objects hidden in shadow or objects blackened by standing in front of bright lights.

Surrealism

"Home Away From Home"

Image

People can look into their subconscious by analyzing and studying their own dreams. Dreams have always been known to show us what we really want even if we do not know it ourselves. In this picture, I showed the place I escape to when I dream and the objects waiting for me there. The motorcycle shows me my lust for some kind of adventure and escape. The waterfall depicts how I follow currents in the world, the fact that it comes from the tree and leads to ground means I start from life but if I carry on with the flow it will lead me no where. My dreams are always at night; this means my comfort in ignorance. I live my life in the unknown for the truth may be not what I want to know. How I am walking to the moon is another example of my need to escape my world I live in right now. The footprints left behind are backwards portraying how I will end up where I started regardless of how far I walk.

Surrealism Tutorial

ImageImage
As one can assume, this picture was not taken from a camera but all the objects were placed together in photoshop to create these surreal images. although surreal is not meant to be "real" they are in fact realistic. giving tiny details can give them ther realistic feel such as shadows, land to stand on or fall to, and giving natural lighting and colors. to make the surrealistic look one can put lands together and blend them with a soft eraser shown in photo 2. changing levels and colors also add to this effect. placing pictures or layers on top of each other and using different blending options is essential to this look. by practicing these tutorials i learned how to better add a realistic feel to my artwork and will be using the techiques in my own surreal artwork.

ART SHOW "my/his/our future"

Image

My/His/Our Future.

Like everyone else in the world, one’s future is unclear. It can lead you to anywhere and nowhere. In my representation of one’s future I decided to show a few of many paths a simple turn of direction can lead you.
I decided to use a picture of the night to emphasize the unknown. For it is in the darkness that we really cannot see what lies ahead of us. The floating compass represents a person’s natural instinct of where he or she wants to go but in the end it takes one only to where it points and that is something no one can control.

Compostitional Trick #3 Macro

Image
Image
Macro photography captures art in the world upclose. this trick could easily be used by any photographer and should be known to use in all sorts of work. the shot of the glasses is an example of macro emphasis while the picture of the eye is a an example of macro texture.

Compositional Trick #2 Leading Lines

Image This trick uses unemphasized lines as a guide to the object that is emphasized. anything can be used as "lines" to do this. rivers, antennas, rows or columns for example.

Social Issues:

Image

In this picture, i took a shot of a noose hanging from a ceiling. there is also a elmo doll hanging with the noose but was blurred out when the saturation was decreased. i wanted alot of grey in this picture to show a fight of light and dark.

The elmo doll was added in memory of a friend i grew up with. they light shades of grey used portrayed a sense of melancholy while the small light coming from the window represented a small sense of hope.

Image Compositional Trick #1 Rule of Thirds.
This trick involves using the grid on one's camera
to place the emphasis in your photo anywhere but the
middle to create a more interesting shot.
