Wally has joined up with the Rogues, but that doesn’t mean he (or they) are safe. In fact, some pretty wild things happen from the very start of this issue. All road are leading back to Fort Fox, but again that doesn’t meananyoneis safe. What secrets will be revealed this issue? Where will Wally be by issue’s end? Wanna know more? Follow us after the jump!
SOME SPOILERS AHEAD!
From last issue, you already know that one of the Rogues is a mole for Dr. Thawne. What you may not know is that another Rogue with a propensity for high temperatures is also working for Thawne, and he makes a blazing entrance here!
Wally and Grodd get away and head for Fort Fox, but that’s exactly what Thawne wants them to do. As they get there, Wally starts to see remnants of his earlier visit with Barry Allen. Only, it’s not the same. Go back to issue #1 and compare Barry’s answer to what’s going on at the lab to what “Barry” says now. It’s a bit disturbing…but that’s what it’s meant to be.
Wally does make it back to the lab, but the biggest danger yet is waiting for him there. Will he be pulled out of reality? Will he enter this weird version of the Speed Force? Who could be waiting for him there? We’ll see more next issue.
NOTES:
We once again see Heat Wave and Weather Wizard, though they aren’t on the same team. In this issue, Weather Wizard shows up in the nick of time for the other Rogues. I’m beginning to think I like this version of Weather Wizard better than the one in the main DC Universe.
The ABSOLUTE Universe continues to be mind-bending, but that’s been the best part of this continuity. Jeff Lemire is making the very best out of every opportunity here.
The artwork is still amazing – showing just how different the ABSOLUTE universe is compared to the main DCU continuity. It’s dreamlike in some panels and high-impact action in others, and I’m a fan of this fantastic artwork, thanks to Nick Robles (pencils/inks), Adirano Lucas (colors) and Tom Napolitano (letters).
SUMMARY: This is another 9/10 for me – of course, that’s just my opinion. What do YOU think? Leave your comments below!

MILD SPOILERS AHEAD!
Just a note – the “Silveraged Ed” handle I use is accurate. I started reading stories of The Legion of Superheroes in the 1960s, even a couple of issues BEFORE Jim Shooter took on the writing duties when he was just 14 years old (and I was younger than that). So, any time the Legion appears in a storyline, I’m in. But, this is NOT your grandpa’s Legion. This is a version of Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl that is loyal only to Darkseid, and they are every bit as formidable as any version of the Legion I’ve ever seen.
Worse yet, Max Mercury (or at least the version of him existing in the timeline Bart is visiting) has become corrupted by Darkseid as well. It’s not looking good for Impulse until Wally arrives. Even then, it’s not getting a whole lot better. One more speedster joins the fight alongside the bad guys (think, who is the speedster that’s a Legion member?). And by the time the fight is over, something HAS happened to the speed force! Will Wally and Bart reach [REDACTED] in time? We’ll have to wait for next issue to learn more.
NOTES:
Speaking of bringing Silver Age characters back like the Legion, they could not be in any more capable hands than the person who could win any Silver Age trivia contest you can imagine, Mark Waid. He and Christopher Cantwell have brought new life to this series, and I’m enjoying every page and every panel.
The artwork continues to be outstanding! I loved how Bart’s imagination was drawn in Chibi art style, which matches the character perfectly. And all the artwork throughout was simply amazing. Thanks to Vasco Georgiev (pencils and inks), Matt Herms (colors) and Buddy Beaudoin (letters).

The ABSOLUTE universe has allowed writers like Jeff Lemire to turn the history of the DCU on its ear. Now, Gorilla Grodd is a good guy? Yes! What about the Rogues? Well, what ABOUT the Rogues? That’s what we will learn more about in this issue. At least we can always count on two things: Wally West is a hero, and anyone named Thawne has GOT to be bad news! Wanna know more? Follow us after the jump!
ONLY MILD SPOILERS AHEAD!
The Rogues have asked Wally to join them. They are loyal to Wally’s dad, but Wally isn’t sure if he can trust them yet. Grodd can help – Grodd has been a saving grace for several issues now. Eventually, Wally learns that the Rogue’s loyalty to Rudy West is greater than any pull Fort Fox may have. At least, that’s true for most of the Rogues.
There is one wild card in the Rogues, but you’ll need to read the issue to find out more about that. The bottom line is that Eleanor Thawne remains several steps ahead of everyone else in this part of the ABSOLUTE universe, and her plans appear to be going ahead full speed!
Wally continues to have flashes (pun not intended) of strange experiences with the forces that have given him his speed, and we’ll see more of what that means next issue.
And we have a tease…for the ABSOLUTE version of a very famous piece of Flash lore coming up in issue #10!
SUMMARY:
This is another excellent issue of ABSOLUTE FLASH. Jeff Lemire’s scripts continue to excel, and the artwork is mind-bendingly awesome. The only thing for readers to know is that you cannot just jump in with issue #9 – but thankfully you can grab all the issues from your LCS or online. This is MUST reading – don’t miss it! I’ll give this issue a 9/10 – of course, that’s just my opinion. What do YOU think? Leave your comments below!
