  • Surviving the Wasteland (“Wasteland” in this case meaning the PS3 version of Fallout 3)

    Image

Fallout 3’s legacy is a strange one. On one hand, it’s the game that not only brought the franchise back, but brought it into the mainstream. On the other, it was shown up in terms of narrative and role-playing by the Obsidian-developed New Vegas two years later. Both of these games have many quirks and technical annoyances that have aged poorly. While some of those annoyances have been smoothed over on PC and 360, the issues are significantly more pronounced on PS3.

  • Tekken 6 (PS3 / Namco Bandai Games / 2009) – Scenario Campaign

    Image

I never really learned how to play Tekken properly, but I’m a huge fan of everything in the games outside of the actual competitive fighting. From Tekken Ball to Bowl, I love all of the goofy side modes in the games. And of these modes, Tekken 6’s Scenario Campaign may be my favorite.

  • God of War: Ascension (PS3 / Santa Monica Studio / 2013)

    Image

I enjoyed the original PS2 God of War duology and Ghost of Sparta on the PSP, but by the time God of War III rolled around in 2010, I was over the character and the formula. Needless to say, Ascension was not even on my radar when it released in 2013.

  • Hunted: The Demon’s Forge (PS3 / inXile Entertainment / 2011)

    Image

Hunted: The Demon’s Forge sure is a video game from 2011. Dubbed “Spears of War” by some, it’s a great idea on paper: a cooperative 3rd person cover-based hack and slash dungeon crawler. But in execution it falls flat in pretty much every genre it pulls from.

  • Sacred 2: Fallen Angel (PS3 / Ascaron / 2009)

    Image

When I was searching for PS3 games that still had active multiplayer servers in 2025, this was a surprising one. I have no familiarity with the series, but was curious enough to grab a copy at a local game store for ten bucks last weekend.

  • Silent Hill 3 HD (PS3 / Hijinx Studios / 2012)

    Image

The best remasters look the way you remember the game, a hardware generation or two removed. The Silent Hill HD Collection infamously did not accomplish that. It is one of the most (fairly/unfairly) derided remasters of all time, but isn’t totally irredeemable, and may actually be a great option for some players.

  • Bionic Commando (2009) In-game Ads

    Image

I recently picked up a copy of the 2009 Bionic Commando reboot for five bucks and man, what a trip. It’s an absurd, sometimes problematic game that is honestly pretty damn fun. The story is ridiculous, and Mike Patton’s (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle) over the top delivery as the main character elevates it to a whole other level.

  • Operation: Operation Raccoon City

    Image

Ever since I embarked on my quest to personally test the online functionality of PS3 games in 2025, one game has fascinated me more than all others: Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. Every time I log on I’m able to join a game within seconds. ORC was panned by critics and players at the time of its release, so why are people still playing it on dead hardware over a decade after the fact? I have a few theories.

  • PS3 Games Still Playable Online

    Image

Ever since I saw this list, I’ve been going down the rabbit hole of active PS3 multiplayer games. The following are games that I have tested myself and can confirm that as of the date listed, they are still playable online. This testing was all done via discs or digital versions on actual, non-modded PS3 hardware. Most of these games aren’t exactly playable right out of the box: I will note anytime a game requires an online pass or a specific DNS address. This post will be updated as I try more games. See you on the PlayStation Network!

  • Don’t Fire Until You See the Reds of Their Eyes

    Image

Yesterday I finished Killzone 2, a strange, frustrating, and weirdly compelling experience. The story really doesn’t propel you forward for most of the game; you’re mostly just meandering towards a final objective, but in the last hour or so, a whole lot of stuff happens.
