Rise of the Machines – How Machine Learning will influence the Game Creation and Operation Process

Artificial Intelligence is on everyone’s lips and will not leave the world of gaming unchanged as the first useful products start to interfere with the creative process. While AI as a more general term has been criticized for its ambiguity, Machine Learning is defined more precisely, meaning the process to make a machine learn a skill quite close to human learning skills. But unlike humans, these procedures are not limited to volumes of data or variable count, therefore making them very powerful tools when analyzing complex, nonlinear, multivariate correlations – situations we encounter very often in human – machine interactions, e.g. Games. Whether one wants to consider game development as an art form or as a business field, a clear view on user numbers, user groups, behavior and tendencies is helpful for all involved in the process.

With the advent of Freemium/Free to play and Games as a Service we see a distinct shift in the way, games must be built and operated. With the potential to derive continuous streams of customer feedback, a continuous development and optimization process becomes realistic and more dominant than a “fire and forget” approach ev. garnered with a few updates and patches.

This relatively new development is shaping the road into a more sustainable relationship with the player through tools we want to describe in this talk – like churn prediction, user segmentation, VIP detection, feature optimization and many more.

Golden Whale Productions was founded by a team of Austrian games veterans (keywords Strike-Net Multiplayer Gaming, WebGames, Skichallenge, Greentube and many more) and sees itself as a data science startup in the gaming market. We are supplying a technology layer and know-how to easily implement ML-capabilities into existing setups or development projects, handle the large amount of data that is produced and quickly create useful models like the ones decribed before for the benefit of the overall project. We see ourselves as part of the Austrian Game Developers Community and are happy to present these interesting new additions to our field of work!

Biography

Dr. Eberhard Dürrschmid is the founder and former CEO of Greentube and a veteran of the Gaming sector. During his more than 25 years in the business, he has experienced dozens of business model and technology shifts as well as the unstoppable rise of Online Gaming. Being data-driven since his biotech-days, together with other Austrian Gaming Enthusiasts he founded Golden Whale Productions in 2022, a tech company aiming at implementing the new powerful methods of Machine Learning into the large streams of data derived from gaming operations.
