Creating groups

In this tutorial we’ll look at how to create groups of children on your Tapestry account. You can use groups to filter pages, such as the tracking screens, and you can use groups to quickly select all or some children from a certain group when creating observations and other posts.

There are certain groups on Tapestry that are automatically created for you based on the information you enter for children, such as gender, season born, cohort year, etc., so it’s not necessary for you to set these groups up on your account.

However, if you would like to have other groups specific to your setting, such as classes, rooms, ability groups, etc., then you can create these on your account by following this tutorial.

Please note that you will need to be a manager staff user on the account to create groups, as this requires access to the Configuration menu.

We’ll first look at how to create new groups. You can do this by going to ConfigurationChildren Groups.

Here you’ll see any of your existing groups, and you can add a new group by clicking on the Add Group button.

Fill out your group details: a name, and description, if you’d like. Click on Select Children to add children to this group.

From the child picker, you will need to tick the box next to the name of the child or children that you’d like to add to the group.

You can use the search bar at the top, or just scroll down until you find the relevant child.

Once you’ve selected all of the children, click Save.

You can add the same child to as many different groups as necessary.

Once you’ve added all of the details, click Save to add your group.

And that’s it! Your group has now been added.

In the next section we’re going to look at editing your existing groups.

Once you’ve created your group(s) you’ll be able to edit these at any time. To do this you’ll firstly need to navigate to the groups page on your account.

As a reminder, this is done from the Configuration menu, and then heading to Children and Groups.

Here you can see all of the groups you have set up.

Clicking on the cog will allow you to view the group’s history and delete the group.

You also have the options to edit the children within a group (both removing and deleting children), and edit the group details (name, description, and children). Just click on the relevant button to perform the action.

If you have set key children for your staff using the ‘Groups’ tab on the child picker: please note that amending the children within a group or deleting a group won’t affect a staff member’s key children.

Now that we’ve looked at how to create and amend groups of children on your Tapestry account, you might like to assign a group of children as the key children to your staff members.

Click on the next tutorial below to see how this is done.
