Weight Lost, for good

ImageSince I put this out in Facebook land, I figured I should put it here also. Its kind of long but worth the read.

So here it is. 30 lbs lighter. It has been a lot of hard work and I never thought I would ever be able to do it. It seemed so impossible to me. The saying is true, if I can do it, anybody can. It is not just based on the numbers on the scale. I have lost 7 in off my waist, 4.5 in off my hips, 1.5 in off my arm around my bicep, 1.25 in off my calf, 2.5 in off my thigh, and 3.5 in off the roundest part of my belly. I even lose off my chest but I will keep those numbers to myself. I went from wearing an XL shirt to a M. Size 14 pants to 8-10 now. You can see it in my face and neck also. So here is the whole naked truth. I am really baring it all. I can't believe I am putting this on FB.

Right after I had Rowyn, my last kid, I was 198. I was in the mind set of "I don't look that bad but could stand to lose a few pounds." I knew that I needed to lose more then a few but it seemed so impossible and that it would take FOREVER! I started working out about a year before we left dental school but I really didn't see the weight come off. I realized that I needed to change how I ate. I worked on that and lost 10 lbs. I didn't track the time frame, so I am not sure how long that took. (you can now start doing the math)

Once I moved to Wyoming, I met two really great friends. Each one was in excellent shape. Nicole has a degree in exercise physiology and physical therapy. Suzette has a B.S. in Health Promotion/Lifestyle Management with an emphasis in Nutrition and Exercise Physiology and also a minor in Nutrition. Nicole decided to start a Biggest Loser type program. We would workout as a class once a week and then weigh in each week and take measurements once a month. Suzette when then talk with us about nutrition and other helpful topics like protein and calories intake and fiber. This really got me motivated because I had to weigh in each week. I started at 188 (do some more math here) They also did this for us for free. I can't even explain the impact they have had on my life.

We started this program in October but I was really struggling to get the weight off even with all my hard work. I went to my doctor because the December before dental graduation I had to have my thyroid oblated and I realized that I needed to start taking medication to regulate it. Once I got on the medication, things started to click.

I then found two other friends, Kristin and Olivia who without them I would not be where I am at today, who wanted to work out with me each morning. Friends are great motivators because they hold you accountable and since we work out at my house, I had to be up and ready. The videos we use are P90X plyo, cardio and core. We also enjoy Jillian Micheals 30 day shred and Fat burner. We tried the 30 day shred for one full month. There are 3 circuits on this video and each one is about 24 minutes long so we would do 2 a morning. We measured ourselves before we started and then 1 month later to see if there really was a difference. I think I lost 1.5in off my waist, .5 in off my arm, and 1.5 off my thigh that month.

In addition to working out every morning, I took up running in March. I hate running. I never ever thought I would be a runner. My friend Olivia, who has lost 50 lbs!, and I would run at the gym each Tuesday night and Saturday morning. My goal was a 5K (3.1 miles). At first it took me around 45-50 min. We ran a 5K here in town in April and it took me 31 minutes! I still run at least 3 times a week with the weather being warmer. Once I started running, I really saw the weight start to come off. my new goal is a 10K. I can also do push-ups and no girly ones. My new goal is to do 1 pull up.

Now to the food part of the journey. I eat and look at food in such a different way now. I already knew that I was an emotional eater. I eat when I am bored. I am bored a lot as a stay at home mom. I would wander into the kitchen and just start eating as something to do. To get out of that habit, for 1 month I tried this diet, for lack of a better word, called the No S diet. There is no eating snacks, sweets or seconds except on S days, Saturday, Sunday and Special days (birthday, parties, anniversaries) . I would only eat 3 meals. Now I got hungry but being hungry is not bad. I was not starving. It pushed me out of the habit of just eating to eat. It really helped me. I still do some of this but not as strict. I do not have seconds for dinner any more. It is my 1 plate rule. If I want seconds, I take one last bite and put all my dished in the sink. I also try not to eat a lot of sweets during the weekdays or have unhealthy snacks. I also look at food and think, "Is it really worth the calories?" I don't have hamburger buns when we grill at home. I put it between romaine lettuce leafs. Now you probably think I am crazy but it's not worth it to me any more. My favorite snack is french bread. I only let myself have it once a month. For you LDS people, it is fast sunday when I get my french bread. I still eat french fries but I only get the value size. I still enjoy sweets but in moderation. I am not going to deprive myself or I would go insane! I have learned that I can have bad days where I eat too much but that does not knock me off my track. I do better the next day. I can still have a candy bar or a cookie once in awhile and not gain 10 lbs.

Suzette says weight lose is 80% nutrition and 20% exercise. That really sucks! I don't mind the working out but it is the calorie counting that i absolutely hate but it is a MUST! If you don't count your calories and watch what you eat, things are not going to move in the direction you want. I use loseit.com. It is a great website where you can put in your weight, your goal weight, and how much you want to lose each week and it will tell you how many calories you should eat. It also adds in your exercise calories that you burn. You can plug in the ingredients from your favorite recipes tell it how many servings you get out of it and it will tell you how many calories it is. I try really hard to eat smart during the day with breakfast and lunch. Then for dinner, I eat what I make for my family. While dinner is cooking, I put in the recipe and decide how much I can eat of it. It keeps track of your food so you don't have to type it in all the time. You can also become friends with people and see how they are doing. Let me know if you start to use it and I will become your friend. You can share receipts also.

I also started to drink more water. I hate water. I have to flavor it. I use Mio and the crystal light type packets. Instead of driving around with my diet coke, I drive around with a huge thing of water.

So there it all is. I was fat. Yes, go ahead and think it because it WAS true, just look at the picture. Now it is not. If you have not done the math yet, I am 158 right now. WOW! Seriously, is that really me?! My goal is to loose 15 more lbs and see how that fits on me. I don't think I weighed that even in college. I want a weight that is easy to maintain. I want to cut out working out 7 times a week. Yes, you read that right, Monday -Saturday and 2x of Tuesday. I don't want to have to work out 2x times on Tuesday and I want to cut out Friday. You probable think I am crazy again, but if you really want to lose weight, you have to make it a priority and make time for it. It does not happen on it's own. You need friends to push you along. You need to make the changes in your eating and habits. If I can do it, so can YOU! You really can because I was the queen of excuses but each excuses is a choice to fail. You can choose to change or you can stay the same. Every time I want to stop and give in I think about where I can be in one month. I could be 5-10 lbs lighter. If I would have done nothing for the last 5.5 months, I would not be typing this note. I would still be fat wishing it would come off on it's own. Time is going to past, you might as well do something to change while it is passing.

Into the Fiery Furnace

I am finally finishing out trip to Moab. It was only 3 months ago, so I am not that far behind. They last hike we went on was into the Fiery Furnace. It gets that name from the way it looks not the heat. There are no trails and you can't go in there without a guide or a permit. There are not marked paths so you have to follow stream beds or stay on the rocks.

ImageClimbing down some rocks in a stream bed that we found and started to follow.
Image
ImageI think Noah loved this hike the best because he has no fear and really enjoys trying to find his way over, around or through. I just love this picture.
Image
ImageAt one point we had to squeeze through little openings between rocks. The kids thought this was great fun. I think that is Link trying to get through.
ImageThat's Big D
ImageThis is Noah.
ImageAnd here is Aaron squeezing his way through a very small opening with the girly on his back. It was a tight fit.

ImageMe and the girl making our way out. We were wondering around in the furnace for about 1 hour. We didn't really want to hike for another hour to get out but we were trying to do what the rangers said and stay off the unmarked areas. As we were getting ready to follow our stream back out we saw some people just ahead of us. We walked that way and what do you know, we were right back at the beginning. There is a stinking path to follow. It must be the one the rangers use when they take a group in. Oh well, the boys had so much fun climbing over everything. It was worth the hour. The End.

Moab Day 2 Delicate Arch

On Day 2, we were headed off to see the Delicate Arch (you can see it off in the distance). This arch is pictured on Utah's license plates. It is a 3 mile round trip all up hill on slick rock.

Image
ImageAhhh Snow Capped Mountains again.
ImageThis is the last part of the hike but you don't know it if you haven't been there before. I was a little nervous because it is a narrow ledge with a good drop off. If you are afraid of heights (C and me a little) your stomach starts to flip a little. Once you get around the corner, this is what you see...
Imageit looks like an amphitheater or a giant bowl. You can walk out to the arch by walking to the left around the bowl. C wasn't sure he wanted to go and The Pres stayed with me.
Imagebut Big D and N were more then willing to walk out there with Dad (C went with them). The spent a good time exploring all around. It made me really nervous and my stomach wouldn't stop doing flips.
ImageThere we all are. It was really worth the hike up hill to see this glorious structure. How can you not look at this and the snowy mountains and not glory at the wonders that our Heavenly Father gave us to enjoy? I love all of their individual expressions. Don't they look like they are having a blast!
ImageJust some pictures of the kiddos. They were great sports and pretty exhausted by the end of each day. The girly loved it because he daddy carried her most of the time.
ImageThis boy amazes me. He is a teenager now and I expect him to not enjoy family things. You know how we all were as teenagers. He loved the whole trip. In fact, he was the one who convinced us to spend the next morning going on the one hike that we missed. He is excited to go back.
ImageN and Big D probably had the most fun. They love to climb and big and be adventurous. They both have no fear.
ImageBrotherly love. These are the moments that parents love to see.

next post: Into the Fiery Furnace.

Moab First Day Part 2

Wow, I am finally finishing the post of our first day at Moab. After we made it to the Double O arch, we had to hike back down. On the way, we hit the arch paths that branched off the main trail.

ImageJust of picture of the little guys climbing up a rock wall.

ImagePartition Arch- Just view of the area through the arch and a nice place to sit and rest.
ImageNot sure what this is, but I think it looks cool.
ImageSkyline Arch- You can see to the left where part of the rock broke off.
ImageLooking straight up at Skyline Arch.
ImageGirly playing in the soft sand at Sand Dune Arch.
ImageSand Dune Arch. The sand here was so soft and really hard to walk in. The boys figured out how to climb to the top of the arch. With C being afraid of heights, he slowly made his way across and would not stand up.

ImageBig D, having no fear, just walked across like his was waling down the street.

ImageN has no fear also. The sand was so soft that they could have jumped down and not gotten hurt, though I wasn't going to let them.
ImageAgain, No Fear Big D jumping off a rock.

ImageThe boys had so much fun climbing anything and everything. It was a great first day, though we were all tired from walking so much. Next post, Day 2.

New Temples Announced

Image
Yesterday during General Conference for our church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 3 new temples were announced to be built in areas close to my heart.

First, Meridian, Idaho, right near my home town. The saints there must be really busy with a temple already in their midst. With this new temple, the Lord is asking more of them but I know they are up to the work.

Second, The Fort Collins, Colorado temple just a mere 45 minutes to an hour from me. I am so excited for this temple. Not only can I know attend during the day while my kids are at school (and the help of some great friends), Aaron and I will be able to attend together more regularly

Our Prophet, Thomas S. Monson, promised us today that when we attend the temple we will find peace, be renewed and be fortified. Temples helps us know that life beyond the grave is as real as life here on earth. Faced with the chance of losing my sister to cancer makes this statement more real to me then ever before. I know that if I qualify and stay worthy to attend the temple, I will see my loved ones again some day.

Spring Break Moab First Part of Day 1

Since we don't live near our families we usually spend our vacation time traveling to see them. For Spring Break this year we decided to take a full family vacation. Aaron even had the week off. We wanted to go somewhere close so we decided on Moab Utah, only about 7 hours from us. I even found a hotel with 3 queen size beds for $76 a night! I usually have to get 2 rooms to fit our family, so we don't stay at hotels that often. I was excited because I have wanted to see Arches National Park.

We spent two days hiking around, about 6 hours each day. We hiked every trail and saw every arch that the map had listed. We all have water back packs so it makes hiking easy. The boys loved it because they are boys and they like to climb. The girly loved it because her daddy carried her almost every where. The weather was perfect. The first day was a little warm with 70 but the second day was cloudy with a small breeze. Not too hot and differently away from freezing temps.

ImageThis was the start of our first hike. Heading into see Landscape Arch and Double O. The Double O hike was around 4 miles round trip.

ImageLandscape Arch
ImageIn 1981 while someone was taking a video of the arch, a section of the rock fell off. It broke off from the part that is the thinnest. There are warnings up that tell you to run if you hear cracking and popping.
ImageA view of some of the formations along the way.
ImageAlong the hike you have to walk along some rock fins. This is just a great picture of Aaron and my oldest looking off the edge of the fin.

ImageDouble O Arch, not the best picture. One on the bottom and one one the top.

ImageN climbing around. He has no fear of heights.
ImageC finding a way down. He has a small fear of heights that was tested the next day.
ImageThe Big D, our monkey, absolutely no fear. He was making an older gentleman a little nervous.
ImageThe Pres. making his way up a rock.
Image
ImageDaddy with his excellent skills of hiking and climbing with a hump on his back. He is was the best carrying and extra 30 pounds. He also deserves a metal for putting up with her talking in his ear all day long. She never stops talking or singing.
ImageI am a sucker for a fabulous view of snow capped mountains. My absolute favorite thing to see in nature.
ImageThe girly trying to carry a bunch of rocks. We finally narrowed it down to one.

A side note: As we all know, boys have an easier time in nature when nature calls. Girls, not so easy. They were finding hiding spots and doing there business quite a bit. When you have a supply of water strapped to your back, it is easy to have to "go" a lot. The girly ended up wetting her pants because we didn't help her in time. One the way back down, we were talking about how much the boys where "going" and how she wet her pants. Aaron commented on how we went up the mountain and peed and came back down. The girly says, "Yep. And that's all we did." We just thought it was funny.

Second half of day one to come later. We took a lot of pictures.
