Moving to Linux.

Sorry! I posted in the wrong group! I keep getting these tech support groups mixed up! sorry!

I am thinking of trying again with Linux...
However, I do have a relitivly screwed up partition setup, and I must be able to use skype.

So, 4 questions...Can any on you please help?

1 - Does anyone know how good the latest beta of Skype for Linux is?

2 - When I last used Linux, NTFS support was not great. What is it like these days?

3 - On my PC, the hard disk (80 GB) is split up as follows
c:7MB Fat (Don't ask!)
d:50GB NTFS (windows and applications)
e:10GB NTFS (Files)
f:10GB NTFS (More Files)
g:4GB NTFS (Stuff)

After cleaning up a few things, I will have about 30GB to play with for use as places to put Linux and it's stuff.

So I am thinking of partitioning the disk as follows....
c:7 MB Fat (Don't ask!)
d: 25 GB NTFS (windows and applications)
/1 GB (main Linux parttion)
/Usr5 GB
/Boot50 MB
/Tmp2 GB
/Var2 GB
/Usr/Local8 GB
/Home8 GB
e:10 GB NTFS (Files)
f:11 GB NTFS (More Files)
Swap:2 GB
g:1GB NTFS (Stuff)

C & D have to be left where they are, and so does E & F, but I can shrink D, and so leave 25 GB space for linux, as above.

Will that work?

4 - However, I seem to recall that Linux needs to be near the start of the disk to be able to boot. Is that still correct?
