Riddle me this, Riddle me that . . .

Ok, this isnt posted as asking for help, more as asking for opinions to something that happened.

- Windows XP Home Edition, you have to activate it after 30 days -

My Mother in Law didnt do this, and I didnt know she hadnt done it yet.
So I ask her if it can wait till morning and I can go find a temporary solution so that I can get it on the net and find out why it wont activate over the net. She wants it down NOW. I tell her ok, so I go downstairs and look up the method ( I wont disclose it because I dont condone pirating ) and then go back upstairs and shes already on the phone with Microsoft . . . 10pm and people are trying to sleep and shes screaming her product ID numbers at the guy on the phone, which is why I wanted to wait till morning and went to find the temp solution so she could at least get on the net.

The person on the phone tells her that apparently her key is invalid and she has to format and reinstall. Im like . . ok nice script reading there. . . let me work on the computer. Then she basically tells him to get screwed and calls the New York number. The person there looks into it and then tell her that the reason her key is invalid is because she downloaded the critical updates / microsoft patches. " Scuse me? " I say. What kinda crap is that? You are telling me that because I patched the machine to PROTECT it against crap that MICROSOFT screwed up and released patches for, it's MY fault ? She then pushes the phone into my face and tells me that the tech wants to tell me how I messed up and all. Im like . . no, I dont need a person trying to blame me for something that the COMPANY did. It even asked her when she FIRST booted up the machine if she wanted to go download the updates for her computer from MS's website. She couldnt because I hadnt run the internet to her room yet.

I still dont know why she didnt activate. I thought it was done already because I never got the reminder. I was only on her computer for maybe 15 mins putting in the updates and locking down her system some to help keep it somewhat protected. Not that it matters, she already has downloaded several search bars, several download accelerators. She also informed me that she no longer wants my help because MS told her it was my fault. Im thinking, ok...you can pay a tech the 60 - 90 bux an hour for labor when he has to come out and remove all the crap you are putting on your machine.

So my riddle . . Why does MS use Auto Update to constantly tell you to remind to download the critical updates if its going to mess up your product id, and then when you call MS to activate they tell you its YOUR fault? A R G H !

This isnt a help request, the problem was solved, more like just an opinion asking :)

Peace
