You're WHERE?

I'm new, but I'll make the introduction brief. I work for the on-campus tech support at a small university in the northwest. I've had the job for all of three weeks, and never really intended to work there, but after my boss forwarded them a snarky e-mail I sent to my co-workers asking them to please not be dumbshits when using the internet on our work machines, kthx, they hired me on the spot. It's good to have communications skills in addition to being able to fix computers, I guess.

So, funny story time.

The other day, I came into the office as one of my co-workers hung up the phone and started cracking up. "Get this," he said, "This woman just called, said she couldn't connect to the internet. I walked her through some basic troubleshooting stuff, but it still wouldn't work, so I told her to bring the machine down to our office. She asked where it was, so I told her we're in the basement of [that one building]. 'The what?' she asks. I tell her it's on the south side of campus, with the other big buildings. 'I've never heard of it,' she says. I ask her where she's calling from, figure I can give her directions or something.

"She replies, 'Florida State University. Gateway gave me your number.'

"And I tell her, 'Ma'am, this is MONTANA State. I think maybe you should try calling your OWN campus for support.'"

...what I want to know is how the hell Gateway got our number, and why they're handing it out to random people across the continent from us.
