Propagation - A Fool's Game
Just received a call from a person who was so dense they practically had their own gravitational pull. Not 5 minutes ago did he update his DNS information and he wanted to know why his site was not pointing to our IP Address/Mail Servers. Here's the convo:
Mr. Dumbass: I updated my DNS information with my registrar 5 minutes ago, why isn't anything pointing?
SeXxY Tech Rep: Once you update your DNS information, the changes need to propagate. This normally takes 24 - 72 hours to fully complete.
Mr. Dumbass: But there's something you can do to speed that up, right?
SeXxY Tech Rep: No sir. Various Name Servers across the internet update at different times, some of which don't update but every 3 days. The 24 - 72 hours is a rough average.
Mr. Dumbass: I see. So what can you do to make that happen quicker?
SeXxY Tech Rep: ... Nothing. We only have control over our Authorative Name Servers, those update every 12 hours.
Mr. Dumbass: Oh good! So in 12 hours it will work?
SeXxY Tech Rep: *headdesk* No sir, *WE* update every 12 hours. If you continue to experience difficulties after 72 hours, you can give us a call back and we can research it further.
He went on and on and FINALLY 20 minutes later, he hung the fuck up. Why do I do this job again?
