There are days when I can smack some people
I took out the names to protect the innocent.
Below is a series of emails regarding my FIERY, which is a print server attached to my color copier. There is a "networking" side of the machine (which allows it to be networked to my computer)but those controls are handled by the company M. There is a null password on this end because there are any number of techs who can be assigned to come out and work on it.
Well, this is about the 7th time, the Network Security Idiot at the university decided to have a coniption over it. We have had this conversation more than once. He keeps insisting that it is a real time file storage server, not a print server.
So he sent a query to the newly appointed Head Tech at the college I am a part of. So I had to bring him up to day.
Emails are in the order they got sent.
Be amused. I am.

From A at College
To Me & J
Hello Me & J
Me, J of XXX security thinks that you have a compromised Nt server. It has an IP of xxx.xx.xxx.xx & currently it has an admin account that has no password. Could you please check out that system and get back to us. If you need any help from XXX technology please let use know.
If you would like to speak with J direct his number is x-xxxx & his email address is xxxxxxx
PS. Is this machine your web server?

He just doesn't get it... This is about the 10th time I will explain this to him. But for your edification here is what is going on.
This is a computer attached to our color copier. It has no monitor, no keyboard, it is linked via a program to the color copier, and I log into it, via an interface program installed on my computer. I do not have access to the NT/NETWORK side of this server, only M does. It is a print server. Nothing else. The admin account has no password because M has umpteen techs who can be assigned to come in to work on it at any one time. There are, also according to M, 250 different levels that a tech may or may not have to log into, and each one requires a password. That is why they require a null password on their side of the machine. I have no control over this whatsoever.
J has talked DIRECTLY with M about this on one or more occasions.
I can have M call him directly, as in the past, I have never gotten him to understand it is a print server and nothing more. I cannot set the password nor access the part that he see's. Only M can.
I would have thought at this point he would have written this down since we have been doing this for close to 4 years now.
I'll take care of it.
Thanks.. I think
Laura

Hello Me,
Sorry for the continued problem.
I apparently was out of the loop myself, as D must have gotten this in the past.
Thanks for the update.

Email #4 My email to My M Tech
Hi S!
Remember back to several months ago, when my Systems Security Network Guy decided to have a hissy fit over the null passwords on the tech/network side of the Fiery attached to our CF2001?
Well, he is at it again, and instead of arguing with him about a part of the server I have NO control over what so ever, would you be so kind to have one of your techs call him and explain this once more to him that this is a print server? Or even email him? This would make it much easier on all of us (instead of the 2 day go around like last time.) and will keep him from locking me out... again. (He went in and set tons of passwords last time if you recall)
The IP address for reference is xxx.xx.xxx.xx.
Whoever you had talk to him last time, got him to understand it all.
J's direct his number is xxx.xxx.xxxx & his email address is xxxxxxxxxx
Thank you SO very much in advance!
P.S - (Account Representative), I am copying on you on this just for your knowledge.

Hopefully, J will not decide to reset the machine again. Eghads, you would THINK that after the 3rd time he would have made a note that xxx.xx.xxx.xx is a PRINT SERVER attached to a SINGLE MACHINE and not a file server. EEEEESH
