So here is the thing: I regularly play a few of the free games on the NY Times web site. (Wordle was my gateway drug.) One of those games is called Connections, which gives you a set of 16 words and you have to group them into sets of 4, where the words in each set have something in common, and the sets vary in difficulty from obvious to "Huh?" Usually, I don't have too much trouble, though sometimes, I have no idea what the category for the final set is; it's just whatever's left over from the other sets.

A few weeks ago, the last set consisted of the words "Dandelion", "Dice", "Candle", and "Eyelash". I had no clue what the common factor might be. It turned out to be "Things you blow on for luck or wishes". And I went "...eyelash? Huh?" So I did a web search and found out that there is a thing where one can wish on eyelashes that have fallen out, which is something I had never heard of.

So: is this a regional thing, or have I just somehow failed to come across it? Have I been living under a rock without having realized it? How common is this?

...When and why did you leave a small plastic squeeze bottle of lemon juice in the bathroom cupboard?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I got my second COVID vaccine yesterday. Again, I lucked out in the post-vaccine reaction department - my arm got sorer, faster than last time, I had a low fever and some mild chills overnight, and today I feel slightly 'off', but that's it.

Whew! So now all I have to do is wait out the two weeks for my immune system to make the most of the vaccine, and I may actually be able to leave the mask off - at least in some situations. (Which doesn't necessarily mean I will, given that "maskless in public" has pretty much taken the place of "naked in public" on my anxiety dream roster...)

Well, I'm now 28 hours post-vaccine, and the worst that's happened is a sore arm. Whew!

For those of you who have yet to go, my mom had some suggestions she'd heard - to the best of your ability, when you go for your vaccine, be:

- well rested
- well fed
- well hydrated

Supposedly, that may help your system cope better. And even if it's just Fake Science, it's not like any of those things will hurt you, so why not? :-)

P.S. Thanks for the good wishes yesterday!

I got my first COVID vaccine today (Moderna). The second round is already scheduled for 4 weeks from now.

Here's hoping I'm one of the lucky folks with few or no side effects!

I just updated my OS from Mojave to Big Sur. Aside from a bunch of undefinable "Hey, this doesn't look like it used to" things, it's mostly been pretty smooth.

However (and you knew that was coming, didn't you?), I have over many many years become accustomed to using the "Random Extra" screensaver module. It allows you to choose from a checklist of screensavers installed on your machine, assign relative frequencies, and a couple of other nifty things. Alas, it doesn't work correctly on Big Sur. Some screensavers don't show up on its checklist, and others fail to run when selected by its randomizer, even though Big Sur's screensaver module runs them just fine.

Now, Big Sur's screensaver module does include an option to use a random screensaver, but it chooses from the full list of all of the installed screensavers, and most of them are either uninteresting or actively annoying to me.

My question is: is there any way to limit its selection of screensavers? The interface doesn't seem to allow for deleting or deselecting any of the installed ones. I would love to find a way to have it choose from among my favorites.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, people! While the cause may suck, it's great to see all of you again!

There I was, at home, sitting peacefully at my computer and doing customer support over the phone (as I so often do), when there was a loud crashing/rattling/...swishing...? noise from outside. After I got off the phone, I went to my front door to see if I could tell what it was.

Here is what I saw... )
terrio: (Default)
Thing 1: I went to the mall on Saturday and by the time all available discounts and coupons had been applied, I came home with a very nice long-sleeved shirt for $1.89 (originally $24).

Thing 2: I just got home from grocery shopping (milk, eggs, mushrooms, and a whackload of frozen dinners) and when I looked at the register receipt, it informed me that I had saved 58% ($48.something down to $20.something).

Thing 3: The avocado tree on-site has gifted me with two more of its offspring, one of which is just about ripe enough to eat.

\o/

What's going well with your week?

I just finished watching the last of my backlogged episodes of Person of Interest! \o/

A couple of snapshot reactions: )

So I'm all set to watch new eps, yay! And thanks to those of you who supported me in this endeavor. :-)

...is to get caught up on Person of Interest before the new season starts on Tuesday. I've made a pretty good dent in my backlog; I've watched "Critical", "'Til Death", "C.O.D.", "Shadow Box", "2-Pi-R", "Prisoner's Dilemma", and "Dead Reckoning". All this weekend, 5 eps yesterday, 2 today, and I hope to fit in "One Percent" before bed. That will leave me 8 eps to go.

Wish me luck?

I work doing customer support and user training (and software testing, and documentation, and...) for a small software company in Utah. Wednesday night/Thursday morning, we released a bunch of new features and enhancements to existing features, and I expected there to be a number of support requests related to the release.

Not a single one. Which is a good thing, I guess, in that people weren't reporting problems, but still. Kind of an anti-climax, I guess?

On the other hand, I have escaped Friday the 13th unscathed, unless something terrible happens in the next 5 hours and 20 minutes. ::tempts fate::

How was your Friday?

...perhaps because I adopted a number of its small kindred and took them to a fannish gathering over the weekend, where they had a short but greatly appreciated life.

There is a great big avocado tree in my apartment complex which shared its bounty with me once before. Apparently, no one makes an effort to harvest fruit in any organized sort of way, but whoever happens upon an avocado on the ground is free to make off with it. Which I did yesterday -- two of them, actually. They are sitting on my counter ripening, Even As We Speak.

Yum.

- Hair: cut! First impression is that she did a really good job, though I'll be able to tell better once I've washed and dried it. It's maybe a little long on the sides, but I can fix that myself, and she may actually have achieved what I thought was impossible: a hair cut that can air dry and not leave me with the Ducktail of Doom in the back.

- Groceries: purchased! The store had a 2-lb bag of small avocados on sale for $1.35 or so; I went gimme. Plus milk and ketchup and other boring stuff like that.

- Laundry: in the dryer. I just did the crucial stuff today, will need to do another load in the next couple of days. But for now, there are socks and undies - or will be as soon as they are dry. \o/

How did y'all's weekends go?
terrio: (Default)
Tasks accomplished:

- Target: socks returned, other socks purchased, along with some of the random miscellany that Target excels at.

- Mall:
     - Sears: watch battery replaced, new band purchased for old watch;
     - Food court: sushi eaten (it was pretty good, for food court sushi);
     - Kohl's: $10-off-purchase-of-$10-or-more gift card used (I got a tight-sealing plastic container to put flour in - and it only took me an hour or so and two trips through the whole entire store to decide what to get. Why is it that gift cards are so hard for me to use? It's like I feel this deep-seated obligation to get exactly the right thing, even though it's essentially free. Why so silly, self?)

Tasks remaining:

- Haircut!!!

- Grocery shopping

- Laundry, omg, how did I forget laundry? The situation is getting critical...

I've been seeing many of my friends committing themselves to posting once a day for a month. Here I sit, having just passed my 10-year LJ-versary, and only ever having posted 26 times. Ever. I think a post a day would be too much of a shock to my system, but once a week may actually be doable.

So: My plans for the weekend:

- Get my hair cut. It is Dreadfully Shaggy and driving me nuts. I have been procrastinating, since I didn't like my last haircut and want to go somewhere else. Of course, this has a whole other set of associated issues - what if they do a terrible job? eek! plus, omgCHANGE eek! eek! So, wish me luck.

- Go to Target to return the athletic socks I got, mistaking them for plain old ankle socks.

- Go to the mall to get a new battery for my watch. I've been procrastinating on this one, too. I have been able to do this by the good graces of the old-school winding watch my parents gave me for Christmas when I was 12, which after a multi-year span when it would not run, decided to run again. Seriously - I got it out to take it with me to get the battery for my usual watch, figuring it probably just needed cleaning, and it started running when I moved it around. So it has been enabling me in my procrastination! It's all my watch's fault! ::kof:: (I would probably continue using it indefinitely, but the watchband is driving me nuts.)

- The obligatory grocery shopping, whee.

Now, we'll see how many of these I actually convince myself to do....

I am in possession of a rather large number of books -- more, in fact, than my bookshelves will accommodate. I am therefore contemplating a weed-out operation, based on the fact that I have books on my shelves that I have owned, in some cases, for over a decade, and have yet to actually read. It seems it may be time to acknowledge the fact that if I haven't read them by now, I'm probably not going to.

And yet I'm waffling -- I mean, I own them already! It's not like they're costing me anything other than shelf space. And what if I get rid of something I might have loved?

So: I am seeking opinions. Behind the cut is a list of some of my unread books -- mostly trilogies, or authors I thought I might like and bought more than one of their books without having actually read any of them. (I figured this would give me the best bang for my buck, weeding-out-wise.) Any thoughts along the lines of, "Yeah, dump it, it sucked," "Noooo, keep it, it was awesome!", or "Well, that one (those ones) sucked, but this book (series) by the same author was great!" would be greatly appreciated. I generally privilege sympathetic, believable characters over spectacular plots and/or world-building, though those are also nice to have. I hate depressing, downbeat endings and have a limited tolerance for "grim".

The List: )

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions!

I've been reading the VVC accessibility conversation in many places on my reading lists over the past several days, watching as the discussion gets more and more heated, to the point where someone is actually threatening a class action ADA lawsuit, and I keep wondering:

How many actual people with disabilities who have attended VVC, or hope to someday, are watching all this and thinking, "Thanks anyway, but PLEASE STOP BEING ON MY SIDE."

God knows I am.

In honor of LJ's recent difficulties, I thought I'd offer some invite codes. I've got five -- get 'em while they're hot!

[livejournal.com profile] giglet kindly pointed me towards the [livejournal.com profile] gardening community, where they apparently get mystery plants all the time. And yay! [livejournal.com profile] regality3 swiftly identified it as a Justicia carnea, aka Brazillian Plume, among other names. Apparently, it's a variety of Acanthus.

I only wish I'd been able to get a picture of the whole plant, rather than this one offshoot, but my lame-ass camera flaked out before I could. The wretched thing won't stay powered up for more than a minute before it shuts itself off, complaining of low battery, and I've tried three different sets of batteries in it. Argh!

(Trying again; hopefully this time the pictures will be visible to People Who Are Not Me. :-)

(Third time's the charm?)

I just got my very first digital camera, just in time to grab a couple of pictures of my freakish plant of extreme freakishness before it stops blooming. I'm hoping someone Out There can help identify what on earth it is; I certainly have no clue.

The plant )

A close-up )

So, what do you think? Is it likely to take over the world if I turn my back on it? Will it produce spores that make Spock hang by his knees from the nearest tree? Any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated.

And a bonus, just because I kind of liked how it turned out:

I'm back! and moved! and, thanks to the good graces of a local friend, re-connected to the Internet! Yay!

It was very disconcerting to be offline for an entire week, and I'm very glad to be back.

So... what have you all been up to? :-)
terrio: (Default)
Things are progressing -- yesterday, I packed eight boxes of zines! (Which is all of them, thankfully. Boxes of zines are heavy.) Still to do: pack up kitchen (omg!), many loads of laundry, drain waterbed, etc. Moving day is tomorrow -- well, loading-the-truck day is tomorrow; the current plan is for my folks to rent a moving truck, drive down here, load the truck, drive back home, unload the truck, return the truck... and then do the same thing in reverse a week later. Much as I appreciate their willingness to help me move, I still think they're kind of nuts for not just keeping the truck parked in their driveway for a week; it's not that expensive....

I think I've got the change-of-address stuff covered -- speaking of which, if any of you want my new address or phone number, drop me a comment here with your e-mail address (unless I have it already) and I'll send it along. (I'm bummed I don't get to keep my phone number, but the guy from the phone company said my current prefix isn't available in the new location. But still, I pout.)

Huh. Guess I should go do something. Other than read LJ, that is. :-)

So, for those of you who don't already know, I'm moving! The apartment complex I'm in is doing renovations on all the units and therefore kicking people out, woe. I've found a new place I really like, but found out yesterday that it won't be ready in time -- I have to be out of here before November 1st and the new place won't be ready till November 10th. (Though I'm hoping they may be able to get it ready a bit sooner than that.)

And on top of that? I don't have any moving crew lined up. My life is woefully short on muscular people who can load moving vans with sofas and waterbeds and such.

Might any of you who are local be able/willing to help out? Do you have friends/brothers/cousins/co-workers who might be willing to help a total stranger move? I promise faithfully to have everything in boxes when they show up, and I shall reward them with donuts and pizza or sandwiches or something. And possibly Evil Death Brownies.

Halp?

(Yes, yes, posting twice in one week; what's the world coming to? :-)

Are any of you watching the current season of Dead Zone? I watched the first ep and haven't been able to muster the interest to look at any of the others. Are they worth watching? I pretty much hated the end of last season, and wasn't enthused about the teaser for the second ep of this season, so... thoughts? Opinions? Dire warnings? Happy squeaky noises? Any and all info greatly appreciated.
