Decking the Halls

I love decorating for Christmas and thanks to Ryan's mom, my mom, and after Christmas clearance sales, we finally have a healthy amount of holiday decorations.
ImageImageImage The main tree...ImageThe fancy tree...
ImageIf you're asking yourself how I have a fancy tree with so many little kids, I can assure you that it has already been knocked over twice. Thank goodness for the miracle of plastic ornaments.

My new addition this year was an advent calendar I made at our girl's craft night a few weeks ago. It was super easy (thanks to my friend Mona and her vinyl hookup), it's basically just vinyl numbers on a plate charger, and the marker is a cute fuzzy ball glued onto a magnet...ImageI think my dear sweet husband has saved every single Christmas ornament he's ever had since birth, including the homemade variety from elementary school. (What can I say? He's a gentle giant...) He's too sentimental to throw them all out and I'm way too picky to put them all up, but I strung a select few with raffia and hung them on some of our garland. It turned out much better than expected... ImageI have to give my props to Ryan for getting the lights up early this year, we usually end up with a better late than never situation, but this year he had them up Thanksgiving weekend.ImageImageKaydree was a big help but Carver's idea of helping looked more like this... ImageSo with the lights up and the ornaments hung, all that's left to do is a little shopping. We're not die hard Black Friday people, but we can appreciate a good deal as much as the next guy. So yes, we had most of our holiday shopping 'in the bag' before noon on black Friday. BUT, I will say that was NO thanks to our black Friday trip to Wal-Mart (aka the corporate spawn of satan) where I have never seen so many white-trash and foul smelling people in one location in my entire life (and I live next to the Texas Motor Speedway, hot spot for nascar lovers and mullet lovers alike). We were pushed, shoved, and disrespected to the point where both Ryan and I were happy to cut our losses and get the heck out of there totally empty handed. I have 2 words for you Wal-Mart: NEVER AGAIN! (never again on black friday, that is...hey, i still need groceries). That whole experience made me happy that I spend the majority of my time at home, where we are ready for a relaxing and stress-free holiday season!

Giving Thanks

This year we are thankful for:
Surprise visits from IdahoImageSweet CousinsImageElsie, Jackson, AvaImageGood FoodImageJeffrey, Caitlin, Janeen, Jacks, & BrentImageMom, Dad, and ChrisImageWarm Clothes
Image A Fun Family
ImageAnd last but certainly not least, Pumpkin Cheesecake
Aunt Dee Dee's Famous Pumpkin Cheesecake
CRUST
1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
1/3 cup butter or margarine, melted
1/4 cup granulated sugar
TOPPING
2 cups sour cream, room temperature (16 oz. carton)
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
CHEESECAKE
3 packages cream cheese, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
2 eggs
1 3/4 cups canned pumpkin (15 oz.)
2/3 cup evaporated milk
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 1/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Crust- Combine graham cracker crumbs, butter and sugar in medium bowl. Press onto the bottom and I inch up side of a 9"spring-form pan. Bake in preheated oven at 350 for 6 to 8 minutes. Do not allow to brown. Cool on wire rack for 10 minutes. Keep in pan while cooling.
Cheesecake- Beat cream cheese, granulated sugar and brown sugar in large mixer bowl until fluffy. Beat in eggs, pumpkin and evaporated milk. Add cornstarch, cinnamon and nutmeg: beat well. Pour into crust. Bake at 350 for 55 to 60 minutes or until edge is set but center still moves slightly.(put cookie sheet on bottom rack underneath so mixture doesn't drip on bottom of oven. Put cheesecake pan on middle rack above.
Topping- Combine sour cream, granulated sugar and vanilla in a medium bowl. Spread over surface of warm cheesecake. Bake for an additional 5 minutes. Cool in pan on wire rack. Chill for several hours or overnight. Remove side of spring-form pan before slicing.

As a side note, I was responsible for making the cheesecake (which was totally worth the time and effort, mmm...) and Ryan was responsible for getting the drinks. He was sent to the store to get a variety of different sodas, and he came back with 3 different kinds of Root Beer - A&W, Barq's, and Mug...his idea of "variety" apparently.

PS: This year I am also thankful for courage. I went into my hair dresser looking like this:Image
And feeling a little like this:Image
But I came out looking like this:Image
Image
A wedge with chestnut color and caramel highlights, it sounds more like a dessert than a hairstyle but I am loving it so far.
So if you know this guy:Image
You'll know what I mean when I say this:
"WOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!"
What a great Thanksgiving!

7 months

Somewhere between coughs, sneezes, and sniffles, Elsie and Ava have managed to have another good month. They are eating baby food regularly, E much better than A (which we're hoping will bump her up into a higher weight class). They are also starting to form little words, Ava loves to repeat "ba ba ba ba" all day while Elsie goes for "ma ma ma ma." Elsie has also immerged as the more social of the two, she'll wave hi and even say hi and smile...while Aves has been more of the strong silent type lately. Here's what the rest of the month has looked like for our dynamic duo:

Learning to share (they'll even trade toys sometimes when they play)...

Rolling under the couch can be a real problem...

Crutchin' on the swings, this is still Elsie's favorite place to fall asleep... ImageHanging out...
ImageThese two are becoming best buds more and more as they grow older. We are so blessed to have them in our family!

The Sound of Music

A couple of weeks ago, I had a night out all by myself to go see my sister's All Region Choir concert in Cleburne. It's rare for me to go out without Ryan and at least one kid, so it was kind of nice to meet up with my parent's and just have an all adult evening. At the end of the concert, they announced who had made it through another round of auditions to pre-area. Caitlin told us all that she didn't think she would make it, so when we heard her name called for 5th chair we went crazy! This means she has to make it through only one more audition before becoming a member of the prestigious All State Choir. She is so talented and we were all very proud of her that night... Image ImageRyan and I also took a night away from the kids together to go see our friends Brian, Jenny, and Shelby perform in Michael McLean's "The Forgotten Carols." I wish I would've brought my camera that night because it was so fun... a really neat musical with a good message. And after hearing all that great Christmas music, we are definitely geared up for the holiday season!Image

One of these things is NOT like the others

ImageImageImageAnyone who says that there's not much difference between boys and girls needs to spend the day at my house. Carver has been especially wild and crazy lately. It's not uncommon to find him "monkeying around," he literally starts hopping around, climbing on things, and making monkey noises for no particular reason. We'll say, "are you a monkey Carver?" and he smiles and shakes his head yes. We all know to watch out for the words, "ready, set, GO!" as they are sure to be followed by some flying object, often Carver himself flying from couch to floor...hey, at least he gives us a warning. And then there's my personal favorite, when he hands me the tv remote and says "show peas" as in "please turn on my show now mom" - a truly male moment. Here are our 3 little mohawked babies, we call 'em our little mohicans... ImageWhen thing's get quiet, that usually a red flag... Carver's doing something he shouldn't be. The other day I ran to get the phone and a few seconds later I noticed that it was unusually quiet. I ran to look for Carver in all the usual places but I couldn't find him anywhere. The only place left to look was the babies' room, and low and behold he had climbed into bed with Elsie (who had been napping). I found him patting her head and shoving her pacifier into her mouth saying "here sissy, here sissy."Image Every once in a while the silence is a good thing, like the other day when Carver was just quietly reading Elsie a book while Ava looked on... ImageCarver is normally the first one to jump out of a picture (which is why Kaydree's arms are always around him holding him still). But every once in a while I'll get a smile out of him and maybe even a pose...ImageImage When things get crazy, I'll hear Ryan telling Carver "Good thing you're cute..." But even though he's different from our girls and a little wild and crazy, I sure do love our little man!

die cuts are a girls best friend

We had a baby shower for my friend Cami last week and I had lots of fun with the decorating. I have been wanting a die cut machine or a Cricut forever, but at times like this I realize that it's probably best that I don't have easy access to one or I would just go CRAZY! There's just something about brightly colored paper cut perfectly into cute little shapes that makes me smile (what can I say? I also love school supplies). So anytime I am down visiting my parents in Cleburne, I usually manage to find an excuse to waltz on in to their school district offices and help myself to the resource room, "The Niche" as it is affectionately called by teachers and counterfeit teachers (aka: me). No, I don't have the excuse of teaching preschool this year like I did last year, so my die cutting escapades are becoming few and far between, but something like a baby shower just sets me off as you can see...Image
Image O is for Olivia...ImageImage
Image Luckily, there is no shortage of expectant mothers around here (the 3 girls and 1 boy club seems to be very popular lately...), so I'm sure I will get the chance to help out with another baby shower before I know it.

6 months

They say that with twins the first year is the hardest. Well, here we are at the half way point and it's feelin' pretty good. No major injuries, illnesses, or any other catastrophes. Sure it's hard, but we can definitely take another 6 months with these cuties...
E, A
Image6-9 months is my favorite baby stage. They really start to pack on the chubs before becoming mobile and slimming down and looking like a big kid. I've always wanted a really REALLY fat baby, the kind that can hide stuff in their rolls...not a huge likelihood since Ryan and I were both pretty normal looking. I haven't been so lucky in this department thus far: Kaydree was pretty small, and it got a little better with Carver who was usually right around average. But my 2 girlies are pretty close to a wish come true. At their 6 month appointment, Elsie weighed in at 15 lbs. 14 oz. (50th percentile) and Ava weighed 16lbs. 8oz. (75th percentile). Both girls are in the 97th percentile for their height. So overall, even Elsie (the smaller of the 2) weighs more than both Kaydree and Carver did at her age, and both girls are longer as well...not bad considering their birth weights were much less than our older kids.
You'd think all that extra weight would slow them down but our girls are still all over the place. They love to laugh and play together, it's so much fun to watch. In the past month, the ladies have learned to sit unassisted. Elsie's much more solid, she can balance pretty well on her hands whereas Ava is a little more tipsy (Ryan says her cheeks weigh her down)...

We also started rice cereal. Elsie took pretty well to it but Ava was a little less enthused...
