Last summer I found a fantastic idea on Pinterest, many of you may have already come across it…here’s the idea: have a journal for each child who can read and write and write letters back and forth with them. For example our children will write a note to either Charlie or myself, or sometimes addressed to both of us and leave the journal on our pillow for us to find. Then at our earliest convenience we will reply to them and leave it for them on their pillow to find and respond to. Sometimes we will go a month and they won’t reply, then when they are ready to write we will find the journals sitting on our pillows. It has been such a treat to hear from them and see what’s going on in their little growing minds. These journals are like gold!!
It’s only Nov. 3rd and already they are starting the countdown to Christmas and apparently starting to write down their Christmas lists. I wanted to share tonight’s journal/letters the boys left on my pillow with you…
Letter from Drex:
Dear Mom,
For Christmas I want an I-Touch, that car at Wal-Mart, that Transformers Lego set at Aldi, the DC Jacket at Gordmans, a Nerf gun, a Nook, a Hot Wheels track and a new mattress for my bed. I hope you have a good day on Christmas. Mom, who are we sending the secret presents thing to? (12 days of Christmas)
Love, Drex
This wish list caught me off guard on a few different levels! First off…a new mattress??! Poor guy, he has mentioned how his bed is hard once before but apparently it must be pretty darn uncomfortable to make the Christmas list!! 2nd…I can’t believe he is holding onto the idea of this DC jacket he saw at Gordman’s months ago…that tells me he really truly wants that and makes me want to go get it for him. Which brings me to some of the other aforementioned items that we just saw while shopping earlier this evening (Lego set, Hot wheels set, Nerf gun). These kinds of items are the kind that are subject to change…the next time we go out he will see some other things that will catch his eye and will trump the stuff he saw last time…at least that’s how it usually goes. And, lastly, we come to the I-Touch and Nook. These are things I WOULD LIKE to get for him in a way because they are fun and can be educational…but when you’ve got 4 kids all under the age of 9…you know where I’m going with this. I am somewhat taken aback by the requests for the latest in technology!!
Now wait until you read Quin’s letter:
Dear Mom and Dad,
For Christmas can I have that remote control monster truck that we saw at the store? I also want a Nintendo 3DS, and an Ipod Touch. Can I also get a flat screen TV in our room? Oh, can I also get my own PS3 and a phone??
Your son, Quin
Hilarious right?? These kids think we’ve got bags of money with their name on it!! These letters make me laugh and then almost sad because the simple/cheaper things no longer seem to satisfy them and I’m not sure what to do about that. We really aren’t the type to get them them nicer/more pricey items anytime other than Bday or Christmas so I can see why they would think now’s a good time to put in the requests but seriously what should I do?? Suggestions anyone? I’d appreciate any advice or feedback anyone may have.
Lastly I will share with you a note Liberty wrote to Santa today. She put it in an envelope, addressed it and plans to put it in the mail box Monday:
Dear Santa,
I want a PSP and PSP games like Monster High, Moshi Monsters and a Princess game and a cell phone, and a laptop and a magic wand, and makeup and pet fish and fish food and a fish tank and pixie dust.
I want to go to the North Pole. I want to be an elf if I can come too.
