It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? a place to meet up and share what you have been, and are about to be reading over the week. It’s a great post to organise yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment and er… add to your groaning TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started on J Kaye’s blog and then was hosted by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn here at The Book Date.
Jen Vincent, Teach Mentor Texts, and Kellee of Unleashing Readers decided to give It’s Monday! a kidlit focus. If you read and review books in children’s literature – picture books, chapter books, middle grade novels, young adult novels or anything in those genres – join them.

I didn’t get too much reading done this week. One day away travelling and then one day with family and meeting two of the latest cute additions – two boys. Cousins and only weeks apart so I guess they will be close growing up.

Our weather hasn’t been much, rain and wind that just doesn’t give up. I am about to go on a Monday morning walk into a stiff wind. But if I stayed home for every strong wind I’d never get out!

What I read last week:

Two review books, first one on Kindle and the second on audiobook.

What I am reading now:

This one came in from the library.

I have a couple hours still to go on this audiobook as I walk or don’t!

Falling Apart & Other Gifts From the Universe

book cover

Published:  Lake Union Publishing
Date: November 11th 2025
Source: Publisher via NetGalley

An army veteran with a career as a beat cop behind her, security guard Addie Finch is tough—on the outside. Internally, she’s in crisis mode. She’s lonely, introverted, struggling through AA, estranged from her son, and, at sixty-two years old, questioning her role as a protector. She also has a soft spot for the underdog that’s about to change her life.

Addie finds Jonathan, a homeless teenager abandoned by his mother, holed up in a warehouse and vulnerable to the elements and to predators. Touched by the boy’s gentle nature and a wisdom beyond his years, Addie offers him temporary shelter in her garden shed in exchange for maintaining the sprawling property. It’s an act of kindness and purpose that means the world to Jonathan. But when Addie faces a situation that sends her internal world tumbling, the emotional connection with Jonathan, once the unlikeliest of strangers, becomes her lifeline as well.

As both process past traumas, Addie and Jonathan forge a surrogate grandmother-grandson bond—a chosen family that could restore trust and heal hearts they thought were broken forever.

There is no doubt about it. Catherine Ryan Hyde writes a great story. Falling Apart and Other Gifts From the Universe is no exception. It is full of wisdom and insight.

Addi is a wonderful character, what a life she has had. Like all of us it goes right back to childhood and she has had it tougher than many. Now at sixty two she is at a crisis point. Her saving I think is taking on a new sponsor in AA who really stands by her and helps her to confront her present issues.

Jonathon too has been affected by his childhood, and now is in the worst of circumstances and on the streets. And that is through no fault of his own. Addie reaches out to him and is just amazing with him. Gradually through ups and downs for Addie things begin to move upwards and she learns so much. She is not a hugger but she has a heart. Jonathon has heart too and they make a terrific adopted grandmother/grandson.

I loved the story and I’d reread this book again just for its wisdom.

Well past week was very nice. We had summer weather but with quite a bit of wind. The east side of NZ seems to get the hot weather and we get it a lot milder and lots of wind. But I did walk beside the seaside each day. On Friday as I walked along I could hear bagpipe music, and eventually I spied a piper standing on the bank piping away. I guess good place to go so as not to annoy the family and neighbours. My Dad was a piper in his younger days so I know all about that.

What I read last week:

A good reading week. Three of these are audiobooks. I don’t listen all day but when I go for a walk or when I have a bit of a rest after lunch. The time adds up.  Enjoyed them all. My Friends was outstanding.

What I am reading now:

A book for review.

Safe Haven at Wagtail Ridge. Janet Gover

book cover

Published: Harlequin Australia
Date: December 29th 2025
Source: Publisher via NetGalley

Anna Prentiss, the town vet, keeps herself emotionally distant from everyone. Badly scarred in an accident, she believes she will never be loved. But the matchmakers of the knitting club disagree.

Firefighter Justin Turner is building a volunteer fire service to protect the town during the bushfire season. But Justin and his identical twin brother, Ben, face an unexpected and rocky reunion when their estranged mother crashes back into their orbit.

Justin doesn’t see Anna’s scars – only her beauty and strength. But his attempt at a romantic dinner goes horribly wrong, and he begins to understand how easy it is to be unintentionally cruel – a lesson he should apply to his own past with his mother.

When fate forces both Anna and Justin to confront their fears, they see the chance of a future together. But as a raging bushfire threatens Wagtail Ridge, will this newfound hope be reduced to ash before they can take the chance?

Safe Haven at Wagtail Ridge was a very satisfying read where the pages just almost skipped over by themselves as I read.

I loved Anna who is the local vet, she is badly scarred after an animal encounter that went wrong. Yet now she courageously carries on and faces her fears. How she feels when people highlight her in unkind ways because of those scars is important to be aware of.

Justin is a firefighter, but you can’t mention Justin without Ben his twin brother. They are competent professionals but … have a huge hang up about their mother. Ben especially, and when we eventually learn how it was, well let’s just say, seemed a mountain made out of a mole hill.

Carol is their mother and she rescues animals that have been hurt or damaged in the fires that are often in the area.

As well as a gentle romance that eventuates, the inner journeys the characters make is an important part of the book. Plus the devastation a wild fire causes in the outback. A big part of our world today.

I loved the ending – yes it’s all wrapped up nicely, but that’s what I want in my read. I hope we get the pleasure of visiting Wagtail Ridge sometime again in the future.

Best Books Read in 2025

Linking up with That Artsy Reader Girl

So many good books in 2025, I have listed ten but there were a lot more. If you want to know about a book click the link to Goodreads.

Wild Horses   Jennifer Scoullar. I really enjoyed this book, it hooked me straight away and kept it that way. I especially liked the father son side of the story and Leo’s connecting with Lofty. Christy was a lovely heroine and teacher. I want to go back and see what else is set in Currawong Creek.

Ten Kids Two Lovebirds and a Singing Mermaid Cathy Lamb. A delightful read. The title rightly tells the reader who this book involves. Cathy Lamb has a unique voice and it comes the fore in this book. The narrator is an eleven year old – Jesse. Jesse is one of the five children belonging to Annie. Does Annie have a husband? Not anymore, because he walked out. It was quite dramatic! Over the fence is another family – new to the area. Five kids and Tommy and the mermaid Liliana -Tommy’s sister, they lost their mother in an accident. It’s summer and the kids all get together and have a great time.

The Oasis. Anne Buist. Graeme Simsion. The Oasis is the second book in the Menzies Mental Health series. As soon as it was available I was right into reading it. I had really loved the first book and was ready to follow Hannah and her fellow first year trainee psychiatrists.

Say You’ll Remember Me. Abby Jimenez. It is a love story in every sense of the word. It is both heartwarming and poignant. The title for it is perfect, there is so much weight to that word remember.

A Traitor in Whitehall. Julia Kelly. I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. Place and time felt really right and the characters were very good. The mystery of the murder and the leaking of information was really interesting. There were moments of pure humour that had me laughing. I think the narrator was absolutely excellent. Her narrating of it certainly added to the story.

The Story She Left Behind. Patti Callahan Henry. I loved this listen. I believe the narrating totally added to the mystical magical story. I loved the characters, the beautiful place in the Lake District of the UK. The link to Beatrice Potter was something else I appreciated. The story wends its way from the USA to the Lake District, keeping me engaged the whole time. Patti Callahan Henry has written a gift of a story and I thank her for the hours I enjoyed listening to it. Narrators top notch too.

Second Chance Station.  Renae Black. I loved this book! It is a true second chance theme, with a plot that just kept on keeping me glued to the page. There wasn’t a dull moment. Something was happening all the time. Another Australian author added to my love list.

These Summer Storms. Sarah MacLean. Well I am on the side of “I really enjoyed this book”. It was the audio version and of course with Julia Whelan narrating it really came alive.

Knife in the Back. Karen Rose. Loved it. So good. What a story, and I tried to read it slowly but it is just one of those books that made me want to pick it up at every moment.  Romantic suspense.

The Forget-Me-Not Library. Heather Webber. Ah what a great story, another winner from Heather Webber. Juliet – in need of healing and Tallulah although she lives in Forget-Me-Not – does too. I love a one person story but both their stories melded together so well. I loved all the various characters, especially the older ones, but then Katie and her baby sister were adorable too.

Happy New Year with lots of great reading.

As I sit here it is already the 5th of January, the year has started to speed away already.

What I read last week:

First two read in 2025, the second two in 2026. I liked three out of the four. I did not like The Heir Apparent and was annoyed with myself for buying it.

Top Books for December:

This month I really enjoyed all my books but I’ll pick one book and one audiobook.  Some readers have not liked The Black Wolf thinking Louise Penny has been too message driven. Well sometimes I believe it’s needed. My thoughts “she has characters going off to read Animal Farm and one other I don’t recall. As she was a journalist I believe she has some insightful things to explore and does so in this book. Yes it is political, yes it gives us a view of the environment, as a novelist she can take her journalistic bent and add it to her novelist skills and come up with a book that makes me think.”

book cover

And my audiobook is this one because it’s such a lovely magical realism story. My thoughts “Ah what a great story, another winner from Heather Webber. Juliet – in need of healing and Tallulah although she lives in Forget-Me-Not – does too. I love a one person story but both their stories melded together so well. I loved all the various characters, especially the older ones, but then Katie and her baby sister were adorable too. And not to forget that puppy Daisy. Also the library cat who knew how to pick a book for someone and help them to experience a memory. I wanted to know what would happen but I still wanted the book to last. Top marks to the two narrators – Hallie Ricardo and Stephanie Willis.”

 2025 Reading Goals check

Emilie Richard Reader Challenge. A book with art or music. Fortune’s Son. The heroine developed her artistic skills and became rather accomplished.

Slow Reading book – 25 minutes about a day.  War and Peace – completed

Updated Goals from July 1st 2025. Book Buying.

Only use the one credit a month I have at Audible. Join Audible Au. Did buy some sale books at Audible.com because reasonably priced in my dollars. Very happy with Audible.Au

Always check library before buying a book. Check Kobo before buying from Amazon.

Pretty much what I do. Sometimes I get sick of waiting from the library and take myself off the list and buy the book.

Yes it’s State of Preservation.

book cover

#10 in the First Family series.  I love this series and #10 was published on 25th of December. I have held off for a week because I wanted to start the year with a fast paced suspense book. Lieutenant Sam Holland is the First Lady. However she has kept her job in the police force, while being chaperoned by the secret service. Nick Cappuano  is her husband and they have the most adorable family.  In this book her nephew Ethan goes missing.

The promotion promises… “From the corridors of the White House to the shadowy corners of the internet, State of Preservation delivers high-stakes suspense, emotional depth and the unbreakable bond of a family fighting for one of their own.”

Happy New Year.
