about “the last piece”

James E. Sarver has been writing since he was, to hear his Mom tell it, he was three years old. Mothers are not to be trusted, of course, when it comes to the abilities of their own offspring, but James does remember writing at the age of five, so in this case perhaps Mom has it right. Nearly ten years ago now, having achieved nothing he could have hoped to achieve in the writing field, James went to Korea to teach English. He was marginally more successful in this career, and now lives and works in Qingdao, China, where he is Director of Studies for a small school specializing in preparing students for foreign (meaning Western) university study.

He’s dabbled in YouTube (links below) and recently decided that a lifetime’s worth of writing output deserves, if not audience, at least a publication; these links, too, are below. Self-publishing nine books at one time may seem a counterproductive strategy, but if there’s one thing James has learned, it’s: he’s his own worst enemy. It’s unlikely his work will, at this late date, garner a wide readership, and so he came to the conclusion, Why not create heirloom editions while I’m still breathing? That way, when I’m gone and the world discovers me like it did van Gogh and my family gets rich off the sweat of my brow but doesn’t use the money to upgrade my burial plot, I can look down from Heaven (or up from Elsewhere) and say, “At least I got to see my books in print while I was still breathing.”

Over the years he’s tried many, many different ways of, in the parlance of the aggrieved, “breaking through” and “getting noticed” — if you’d like to contribute to this long-overdue eventuality, please have a look through the tremendous variety, and variable tremendousness, of the projects below.

James, I really liked your bio, I remember you writing at 5 years old, don’t be bashful, you really wrote at 3 years old.
