AI data centers: cooling is the hidden energy cost

As AI workloads grow, so does the energy needed to keep servers within safe operating temperatures. In many facilities, up to 30% of total power consumption is used just for cooling. At the same time, even with growing efficiency efforts, most low-grade waste heat from water-cooled racks is still not fully utilized.

Thermal Transformer changes this balance. Our system uses the waste heat from water-cooled racks to provide cooling for the rest of the data center infrastructure — storage, communication racks, and auxiliary systems.

Industrial cooling need

In industrial plants, gas compressors are essential — and they generate large amounts of low-grade waste heat. Today, much of this heat is simply discharged to the environment.

Thermal Transformer enables a different approach: We use the waste heat of industrial gas compressors to produce cooling, for example to precool the suction gas or serve other cooling demands on site.

Next-generation adsorption heat pump technology

At the core of Thermal Transformer is a new generation of adsorption heat pump technology, engineered specifically for low-grade waste heat and compact, high-performance operation. Our system is designed to:

  • Operate at significantly lower driving temperatures than conventional adsorption systems
  • Deliver a specific power density 2–3× higher than comparable solutions
  • Integrate with modern water-cooled rack systems and industrial heat sources

This combination makes it possible to unlock cooling from waste heat in places where traditional thermally driven cooling has not been viable before.

Thermal Transformer AG is currently building the demonstrator of a next-generation, heat-driven adsorption chiller designed to significantly reduce the power demand of AI data centers by converting waste heat into cooling.
