Maria's temple day

5/31/09

Yesterday my sister Maria went through the St. George temple. It was a beautiful day and I'm glad I got to be there for the special occasion. Here's some photos of a few of the people who came:

Shay's brother Kipp is preparing to go to North Carolina on a mission and so it was his first time going through also. So many big family events! The wedding is in five days--yay!! The insanity is almost over! Let's hope things will slow down after that. Oh wait, I might be moving in a month or so. (whimper...) Could somebody come check on me Saturday to see if I'm still breathing? Thanks. I appreciate it.

It must be that time of year again...

5/27/09

The end of May is always packed for our family. So let me just get this all out of the way right now: Happy 31st anniversary to my mom and dad today, happy belated birthday to my brother-in-law Paul (it was on Monday. Maria's was on Sunday--see previous post), and happy birthday in advance to my dad, whose special day is on Friday. Saturday will be fun too because Maria is going through the temple for the first time. Then it's on to the wedding! You can tell it's getting closer because instead of cleaning my house and getting ready for company, I am blogging. That's what I do.

You can also tell it's summer because Mark and Madelyn get antsy to do stuff outside. Mark came home from rock climbing the other day and had bought Madelyn her very own harness. She is so excited. It is still a little big on her, but she doesn't care. Mark was going to take her canyoneering last weekend in Zion, but thankfully it rained. I was not too happy about my four-year old rappelling off a 60 foot cliff, to tell you the truth. I think she needs to work up to that, ya know??

ImageWell, it looks like it will support all of her 30 lbs. Just look at those gams! Madelyn thinks she's in training to become a model. Being pantsless apparently helps.

Then they had to have their inaugural swim of the year in my parent's pool. Madelyn loves to swim almost more than anything else in the world. She really takes after her dad.

And a couple weeks ago, our friends the Richards came to visit us from Albuquerque. It was fun to see them, chat and let Madelyn run wild in the park with Beckham and Ravi. We really miss those guys.

ImageMadelyn, Ravi and Beckham. The shaggy-haired three.

That same weekend, my little sis Meg had her end of the year ballet performance. Madelyn and I went and I tried to take some non-flash pictures while she was dancing. Meg did really well and Madelyn got really excited about starting ballet lessons someday.

ImageImageMeg's on the front left. The only one in focus. She inherited the Murset long, spindly limbs. Luckily those are ideal for dancers.

And since I haven't swooned over anyone in my blog lately, I thought it was high time for this. Ewan McGregor has long been one of my favorite actors (bad hairdos in Emma and Star Wars notwithstanding...) and on Saturday I went to go see him as the Camerlengo in Angels and Demons. I don't know why, but he just charms the heck out of me. Swoon, swoon, swoon! (Cue him singing in Moulin Rouge!) Check out this article.

Sigh. Time to wrench myself away from the computer and face the messy house. It's a shame that even though summer is here, laundry, bills and dishes know no season. Somebody really needs to do something about that.

Happy Birthday Maria!

Image5/24/09

Take a look at THIS Sentimental Sunday photo! Ha!! Well, Jaki and I still look fabulous (I know--you're loving the sweetheart necklines and the "short" sleeves on our lovely dresses), but boy has a lot changed with my two sisters in the past seven and a half years since I got married. Meg, in the white dress, was only six years old then, and Maria was thirteen.

Today is Maria's 21st birthday, and to accentuate the fact that I am way older than she is, the first thing she did when she saw me today was inform me that I had a gray hair and then pulled it out. Siiiiigggghhh. (Well, I can remember changing her diapers, her crying waking me up at night and her earth shaking tantrums. So there.) But look how cute:

ImageNow Maria is going to be the blushing bride in only twelve days! Aww! I hope she has a wonderful wedding (especially because I was the wedding planner) and that she and Shay will have many years of marital bliss ahead of them. Happy birthday, sis--you are the best!

Our caped kiddo

5/19/09

Sorry, Madelyn, but there's just no one else who can flounce around in panties like you! You'll probably be embarrassed by all these pictures someday, but right now you think you're the bee's knees, especially when you're wearing your favorite Ariel pair.

ImageImageYou had just finished watching Nacho Libre (which you have probably seen 30 times because you love it so much) and decided to pull out your Snow White cape so you could pretend to be Nacho. He flounces around in red undies (over blue tights, thankfully) and a cape too. And we thought you were just born with those theatrics.

Actually, my camera battery died before I could really capture you parading around in front of the mirror. Don't worry--I'm sure you'll be right back at it soon!

Sentimental Sunday

5/17/09

Well, my plans to do a "Sentimental Sunday" every week were almost foiled again. But here I am and wanting to share one of my favorite older photos:

ImageOh, yes. The "Eat your heart out, Hanes, I rock these panties!" photo. (I've posted it before.) It was from October 4th last year, when I'd already been trying to potty train Madelyn for a good ten months. Here it is May, seven months later, and today for the FIRST TIME, she has not only stayed dry all night, but all day today too!!!!

Madelyn has known perfectly well how to go on the potty for months (around the time we moved back to Hurricane almost six months ago, she decided that she could indeed produce something when sitting on her little potty, instead of just sitting there to amuse herself and get my hopes up), but being the most stubborn child this side of the Continental Divide, she would not consistently go. If she did wear panties she'd continue to just pee/poop in them and not be phased at all. Bribes and a sticker chart worked for a while, but she'd go on potty strikes just when she'd start making progress again.

So imagine my shock when this past Wednesday, she all of a sudden only wanted to wear panties, and has been remembering to go on the potty ever since! She has had a few accidents, but she really is doing very well. She won't even wear a Pull-Up at night, which made me nervous at first but so far she hasn't wet the bed. I always knew that it would have to be her decision to do it, because the two things you can't force a child to do are go on the potty or eat. (Well, so all my college childhood development courses said. But I happen to believe them.)

My mom thinks that my Grandma Nora was giving her some help from the other side, because the day after she died was the day when Madelyn made up her mind to do this "for reals," and Grandma was always concerned about her lack of interest in getting out of Pull-Ups. I am just happy and proud of her--no matter what the reason!

Madelyn is also proud of herself and her panties, and she likes show them to her friends and to strut around in them in front of our big wall of mirrors. Today when we were in Primary, she was so excited because we were going to sing "Little Purple Pansies" and she thought we were going to sing "Little Purple Panties." "Mama!! Just like my panties!" She was saying to me. Ha ha.... I hope she keeps it up!

Sorry for the novel, but this has been a looooonnnng journey to get here. I'm praying she'll help her brother potty train at a younger age--4 1/2 years is quite old. (....Sigh of relief that something finally went right this past week.....)

Do you need a chuckle?

5/14/09

Because I do! I have had one C*R*A*P*P*Y week. Grandma dying was just one of the many things that have gone wrong lately. In fact the whole past 6-8 weeks have had enough drama to make me want to go shut myself in my closet, or huddle on the floor of my shower and cry (which I have done several times, actually...).

Anyway, sorry Grandma's post only got one day before I moved on, but I just need to.

One of the things that always makes me laugh out loud are geeky t-shirts. I love the ones with plays on words and obscure scientific references. I appreciate that there are other nerds out me who think those types of things are funny. (I found these on mentalfloss.com and bustedtees.com.)

There's no right way to eat a Rhesus! Hahahahahahahahaa!!!!!! Oh, I am such a dork. But I feel better now. I'll check back in again in a few days.

Grandma Nora

ImageMy dad, Grandma Nora and Grandpa Wally and me when I was a few days old

ImageGrandma, Madelyn and I after Grandpa Wally's funeral, September 2006

5/13/09

My dear Grandma Nora passed away yesterday! I am sad and will miss her very much, but at the same time I know she was ready to go. She had been in the hospital all this past month and was in terrible shape, and now she has been reunited with my Grandpa Wally. It makes me smile to think of them together again, healthy and free of pain.

I am so blessed to have been able to spend a lot of time with her when we lived in Albuquerque. She was a very sweet, loving person and family was everything to her. I won't be able to go to her funerals (one in Los Lunas and one in Taos where she's from and where she'll be buried) but I hope she knows I'm thinking about her. I love you Grandma!

Maria's bridal shower, and yes, I believe I do have flowers coming out of my ears

5/9/09

Today was Maria's long awaited bridal shower, which I was totally in charge of. So of course, in my typical OCD style, I obsessed over every detail for months and yet still ran out of time at the end. I stayed up all night setting up and then fortunately my family came this morning to help prep the food. About 50 people were invited (eesh...well, Maria has always been very popular) and we had a good turnout of about 23-25 people. She got lots of cute things for her home, recipes, and an astounding amount of lingerie. We had lots of fun.

ImageLook! We even look like sisters in this photo!

Image Image Image

So I have been buying flowers for her reception since February, and they have been all over my house, stationed by the computer so that I can feel springy and girly and so that Mark's online gaming area feels slightly emasculated.

ImageI only just arranged all of these this week. There are 32 vases of daisies and tulips.

ImageThese green wreaths are also for the reception (my first attempts at wreath making) and the yellow and pink one is for my Gma Nora.
I've also made....

Maria's toss bouquet for the reception...

Imagea hydrangea bouquet...

Imagea gerbera daisy bouquet...

Image...and a ruffled tulips/lisianthus bouquet for her wedding day. Oh, yeah. And ten boutonnieres and fourteen corsages.
Spoiled bride, much?

Well, I actually love doing wedding flowers, but this has been a very hectic and stressful few months. I am also helping with the wedding cake and pictures and whatever else comes up in the next 26 days. I think it's safe to say that I will be as relieved as Maria is when she's finally married! It's a good thing I love my sister so much!!!

Cute kids

5/8/09

Today (well I guess it was yesterday--I've been running around like crazy for 16 hours) we had a little photo shoot with Madelyn and her cousins, as the Mursets are so fond of doing. (Not the Yoders. Noooo way. Pictures are not exactly their thing.)

Memo to me: 1. Madelyn really needs a haircut. 2. Be happy if everyone is merely looking pleasant in a group photo with little kids. Dancing around, squealing, clapping, and other antics won't make them all smile and look at you at the same time. They have already agreed beforehand amongst themselves to ignore you.

I did manage to get one really cute shot of them, though. Indulge me while I show off my daughter and my nephew Nathan, his baby sister Ava, and my niece Hattie (the blonde one).

ImageCUTE, huh? I'll go ahead and pat myself on the back for that one.

Image
This is more typical of what the rest of them turned out like.

ImageHahahahahahahahaaaa.........poor kids. What a classic picture, though.

Well, it's off to hit the sack for a few hours of sleep before I have what I'm sure is going to be another very long day. (whimper) I'm hosting a big bridal shower for my sister here on Saturday morning, and I've still got a hundred things left to do before I'm ready.

Perhaps that should be my cue to get off the computer...g'night!
