Thoughts on SPN 6.10
Because who's thinking of anything else today???
I did like this ep., but I've got more "concrit" than I normally do nevertheless.
What I didn't like:
I'm not buying souless Sam anymore. He was way too concerned about Dean when they were separated. I can't tell if it's a writing flaw or something more going on, but I just can't believe he doesn't care about his brother anymore. It seemed very inconsistent with not really giving a damn that Dean was "serving the fairy king" last ep.
I also didn't believe Cas watching the porn. Not that the idea isn't adorable in and of itself, but Cas ISN'T sexually naive. He knows what sex is; he just isn't interested in it. It felt like a very clumsy way to introduce sexuality to the character and a pretty strong "HEY!!! HE'S HETEROSEXUAL!!!" from the showruners. Also, from that angle and at that distance, how did Dean notice has "had a boner." Unless he was ogling the guy's crotch or he's VERY well-endowed, it would be hard to see with their relative positioning. Added to the clumsiness, in my opinion.
Why did they bother casting a talented actor with his own fanbase as Christian if that's all he gets? So much wasted potential there.
I'm VERY uncomfortable with the fact that there were babies in that monster prison that Cas is "dealing with".
Stuff I'm not sure about:
The Kegger (my new ship name for Cas/Meg) kiss was DAMN hot. And I liked her reactions to it; being all cocky and "ha, I kissed you" at first and then being taken aback by how much she herself enjoyed it. A nice bit of acting by Rachel Miner, and I'm starting to get ehy my flist loves her so much. But I'm wondering about the POINT of it. If it was a one-off gag, I could have done without it; asexual Cas is a lot more interesting than generically horny Cas. And considering that Dean is one of the two leads and his own romantic relationship feels really rushed and negleted, I just don't think they'll have time to do anything interesting with this. That said, I've seen speculation that it's part of a set-up for a spinoff with Meg as the sort of Catwoman to Castiel's Batman, and that done well? I would LOVE.
I'll miss Crowley. But he was proving kind of one-note, so I won't miss him as much as I would have last season. I'm wondering if he'll be back from Purgatory though.
Now for what I did like.
Monster-Gitmo scared the living shit out of me. That cell where they put Dean? FUCK!!!! Soupa is a creepy vivisector and needs to croak now.
Nice bit of continuity with the Djin being there too.
I thought the whole tone of this one was appropriately creepy. The lighting was very spooky and the effects were genuinely chilling. I was honestly scared at points, which I like from my horror shows.
Sam chewing through his own arm to make the demon-trap! FUCK YEAH!!! At first though, I thought he was trying to drink his own "demon blood" and thought, "dude... that's not gonna work..." but that pink-toothed rin he shot the demons? AWESOME! And yanking an iron pipe right off the wall? All those chin-ups have done the boy some good!
Okay, now if Merlin would just get uploaded to megavideo my weekend of event-viewing can continue!
