02:09 pm - performances

So a couple of months ago I did two performances. They were completely different settings. One in the Wellington Opera House at The Golden Carnie Awards, and the other was a week later, at a dance party. The second was very informal and I decided to use it as an opportunity to try out an improvised performance.

I'm pleased with them both in their own ways, and they were both great learning experiences. I got mixed feedback on the first piece (ranging from sincere "I loved it" to "I've seen you do better"). But there was uniformly positive feedback on the second piece. I'm not sure why it was like that - it could be the different environments, the greater spontaneity of the second piece because it was improvised, or that the two pieces had different emotions, with the second being happier and higher energy. But the fact is that I couldn't have done the second piece without having done the months of work that preceded the first. With the videos, they're now out of context, so we can eliminate that issue. I'm interested in your opinions ...

08:33 pm - NZ Circus Awards

Sooo ... not sure if anyone reads my blog any more, seeing as how I never post, but ...

The NZ Circus Awards are coming up on 20 April, and I'm in the show! There are around 18 acts, including some really great performers from around NZ, and it's going to be a high grade production, held in the Wellington Opera House.

Tickets from Ticketek

And if you're on facebook, there's an event page

Here's a work in progress video for the new act that I'm developing:

And a poster for the show with a photo by the lovely Imagepombagira:

08:35 am - Flyweight Chains

OK, here is me on Flyweight Chains: the aerial dance apparatus that I've spent the last 6 months developing in semi-secret.

One Sunday, around 6 months ago, I was watching Imagehappyinmotion counterweight Imagefuvenusrs up and down, and I started wondering what would happen if an aerialist was counterweighted by their apparatus, rather than by a person. The internet didn't seem to hold any evidence of anyone doing this before, so the only way to find out was to go ahead and try!

The debut performance is in the video below. Not a great run due to some lighting issues that were beyond my control, but you get the picture.

Thanks to all who came along - it was great to see you!

And special thanks to:
Polly Lind for the costume: [email protected], http://www.etsy.com/shop/UrbanWitchery
Patrick Herd for filming the piece: http://www.patrickherd.blogspot.com
Jez Weston for putting up with several months of a noisy apparatus in the lounge, and the same track playing over and over and over again!

Also, I might be soliciting "likes" on the video, to try to push it up the YouTube ratings ...

07:02 pm - disappearing post

Weird, so one of my LJ posts from last year (one that is actually useful, and which I occasionally refer people to) has completely disappeared.

I suppose I might have accidentally clicked on edit, and then clicked on delete, but it's a bit hard to believe.

Anyone else had this problem?

08:59 pm - Why my Dad is awesome

Excerpts from an mail exchange with my Mum:

Mum:
"Forgot to say – your dad says if there are labouring-type things you’d like a helper with (e.g. shovelling for retaining wall) he’d be glad to spend anything from most of a day, to a couple of days (with a bed to sleep on), helping."

Me:
"Holy crap, really? We certainly do have shovelling for a retaining wall coming up ... but Dad's 83!!"

Mum:
"Actually he’s only 82 so he says he’ll be fine."

09:32 am - green roof!

It's done!

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first house with a green roof in Wellington. It took more than a year, and a lot of effort from some dedicated people to get the consent through council. So finishing this part of the house is really a milestone.

Thanks to all of our helpers in the weekend:
Anneke, Jodi, Pipi, Ranty Dave, Ashok, Micheal, Adam, Johanna, Nicola, Wendy, Will, Kelly.
Also thanks to to Cliff our builder, titesite for the conveyer belts, greenroofs & my Mum and Dad for the plants, and Duncan our draughtsperson and Emma from Equus, who put so much work into the consent.
