8th Annual Boys Night Out
The 2007 Version
9/2/07
I traveled on Thursday the 30th of August to begin the 8th Annual Boys Night Out! For those of you not familiar with it, my baby brother and I get together once a year. The rules are that we do what we want. We eat what we want. We see whom we want. And, finally, we do all of this when we want. Mostly, we just play golf, eat and sleep.
Friday morning we played golf at a course called BanBury Golf Course in Eagle, Idaho. The course is par 71. Craig shot an 88 and I shot an 84. I didn’t get any pictures because I left the camera at the house. Sorry. The best part of the round was I finished with a birdie on 18.
On Saturday morning, the 1st of September, we played a course called Ridgecrest, par 72, in Nampa, Idaho. Craig shot a 96 and I shot an 86. We were paired up with a wonderful couple named Wayne and Karen. They couldn’t have been a better twosome. I did take some pictures on Saturday. Take a look.
Saturday night we got together with the kids and went to dinner and later we went back to Craig’s house and watched a movie. It was great to see the kids and get caught up on what’s going on with them face to face.
Today, we went to church and just hung out at the “fraternity house”. Take a look at a couple of future missionaries. Maybe even the one in the middle will go, again!
Tomorrow morning we head for Utah and six more days of golf and visits with friends and family. The first stop is Birch Creek in Smithfield. I can hardly wait.

Monday, the 3rd, we had a great time at Birch Creek Golf Course in Smithfield, Utah (par 72). Well, we played golf, anyway. Sometimes it’s a small world. We were playing hole number 14 on the backside and there was someone mowing the green. He drove by us a couple of times and Craig said, “Hey, Bo!” Sure enough, it was Lee Benson’s (a cousin on the Rawlins side of the family) son Bo. It was great to see him. Craig shot a 93 and I shot an 83.
On the way to the hotel, in Ogden, we stopped in Providence and saw some of the family. Man the kids are growing up. Take a look at the pictures. It was great to see them and spend a little time, together.
Tuesday, the 4th, we played at Valley View Golf Course in Layton, Utah (par 72) with Danny and Marilyn Rees. Danny is our cousin on the Pali side of the family. Sorry no pictures (sorry, I left the camera in the hotel). Marilyn had to bail after nine (48). Danny shot an 86, Craig shot a 96 (all the golf was getting to him) and I shot an 84.
That night we were able to visit with Alfred and Mick Anderson and Uncle Garth and Aunt Charlotte. We had a great time visiting them and reminiscing about the “good old days”.
Wednesday, the 5th, we were able to visit with Norma North and get current on Ryan and Karla. It’s always great to see her. After that, we went to Maddox and had lunch with Kristy Deakin (a high school friend of Craig’s & Miss Utah 1977) and then we went and played golf at Ben Lomond Golf Course (par 72) in Harrisville, Utah. The weather ended up being great, but for only the first hole I had to wear my rain gear (really it was wind and cold gear). Craig shot an 86 and I shot an 83. Tonight we had dinner with Danny and Marilyn and went to see their new house. It’s always great to see them.

Thursday, the 6th, we played golf at Davis Park Golf Course in Fruit Heights, Utah (par 71). Tom Garrison, a friend from high school (Student Body President and an MD) played with us. It was so much fun to talk and renew our friendship. The day could not have been more perfect for golf. Craig shot a 91. Tom shot an 82. I shot an 83. Afterwards we went and had some lunch near Weber State and then we went to Tom’s house and got a tour of his new house. Ladies, you would have been so envious to see the closet space in the master bedroom. Gentlemen, you would have been so envious to see the very big screen TV in the family room. After that, we just went back to the hotel and crashed for the rest of the day.
Friday, the 7th, was an interesting day. Chase was in Provo for a couple of days on a business trip. That’s right, my baby boy is now taking business trips! Anyway, we drove to South Jordon and met for breakfast. After breakfast, since we were so close, we went over to Sally’s, just to see if they were home. What luck! Sally and Clayton were home, along with Andrea and her husband Craig. So, we were able to spend some time getting caught up with the Snows.
Since we were playing golf in Cache Valley, again, we ran out to Aunt Janice’s. The funny thing is that she had heard, from her grandson Bo Benson, we were in town and apparently she had thought that we’d already left town without seeing her. As is the case each time we visit, it was wonderful to recall the good times we had growing up and now the rewards and challenges of that growing up.
We met Bo, Jeff and Paul Larsen (a high school friend) at Birch Creek (par 72). So, we played there on Monday and on Friday. As usual, it was a blast to be around Jeff and Paul. I started off so hot. I shot a 1 over 37 on the front, which included 2 birdies and 3 bogies! Needless to say, I came back down to earth on the backside. Bo shot an 80. Paul shot an 80. Jeff shot an 84. Craig shot a 90. I shot an 83. After the golf we went to a high school football game. Jeff’s son, Jordan, was playing. So it was Skyview (Tori’s alma mater) against Box Elder (my alma mater). Craig and I left at halftime, so, I don’t know the final score. However, I am sure that the Might Bees came back and stung the Bobcats (they were only down 24 to 7 when we left).
On the way back to Ogden, we stopped at Peach City in Brigham City (our hometown) for some milkshakes and conversation with Mike Jones (a high school friend of mine, a perennial Punt, Pass and Kick Champion, a Top Gun pilot, a pilot for Delta Airlines, and attorney). The great thing, besides catching up with him, was that he brought his Dad to see us, too! It was a long day, but, a wonderful day, too.
Now, there are only Saturday’s activities and the plane ride home on Sunday. Time sure flies when you’re having fun.

Saturday, the 8th, was another beautiful day for golf. It, also, happened to be Peach Days in Brigham City. We didn’t go to the parade, but Craig wanted to go to the car show. So, we spent an hour or so looking at cars. It wasn’t too bad. We got to see John Parson’s Corvette. It still looks great.
After the car show, we went to Eagle Mountain Golf Course (par 71) in Brigham City, Utah. We hooked up with Paul Larsen, again, and while we were there we saw other friends. We saw Ted Hansen, Rod Hunter and Scot Davis. We also saw some of our neighbors (former neighbors from BC days) the Hoesels, Cam and Neil. Wow! It was great to see them. The golf and the day were great. Paul shot a 79. Craig shot a 90. I shot an 80.
After the golf we went and spent some time with the Bier family. They lived (well, they still live there) just two houses to the south of our house in BC. It was great to see them and some of their family, who were there for Peach Days and the car show.
So, that was it for the 8th Annual Boys Night Out. Once, again, it was a great time with friends and family. Maybe next year, some of my boys will take a look at joining the tradition. It has been wonderful and I feel so grateful for the moments of “today” and the remembrances of “yesterday”.
PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THE FACT THAT THE PICTURES ARE IN SOMEWHAT OF A REVERSE ORDER FROM THE ABOVE NARRATIVE! SORRY
