Hi there and welcome to my little blog.

I'm Tom. You can call me Tom or Tommx. Don't ever spell my name Thom.

Most of my posts are friends only, but I'm also pretty easy going about whom I will add as a friend. Here are a couple of things you should be aware of:

  • If you're adding me as a friend, it would be nice if you'd let me know a little something about yourself, or at least have a journal that has some meat to it. If you're adding me, and I look at your journal and find practically nothing there, I'll likely not add you.

  • Be respectful of me, and others who comment on my journal. Some may express opinions you disagree with. That's fine. This is a free country. I merely ask that everyone be respectful of one another. Cardinal rule: Don't be a dick. I don't have time for it.

  • I don't talk that much about politics these days, and dislike labeling myself, but it's worth noting that I lean pretty far left on the political spectrum. I believe that vaccines work, I'm pro choice, I strongly support LGBTQ+ rights, and I strongly support gun control. (As in I wish the fucking lot of them could be melted down and used for something worthwhile, but that's not the world we live in.) Point is, if you have a problem with any of that, you may not want to have me as a friend.

  • I'm a cancer survivor who has been in remission since 2022. I'll never be "cured" but if I stay in remission long enough, I won't need to be.

  • I have a pretty colorful vocabulary. In other words, I've been known to say "Fuck" a lot.

  • I don't guarantee that all of what you read here will be interesting. Sometimes I can be pretty damn boring.

  • I don't post much publicly. I've done some public posts here and there, but anything personal (which is most of this journal) is access locked. I'm pretty open to adding new folks, so if you want to be on the list, just ask and you're in like a future dad on prom night.

Today's Bach was Cello Suite 1 in G Major. The soloist was Henrik Dam Thomson, whom I've never heard of, but that's hardly surprising since I haven't really been keeping up on my instrumental soloists. I'm more of the generation of Yo Yo Ma, Rostropovich, etc. I'm hoping as I continue to do this, I will begin to find soloists I like to follow who are still active/alive. Don't get me wrong, Rostropovich was a legend, as was Yo Yo Ma, but I want to support existing musicians as well.

I've heard this suite several times, but haven't listened to it attentively in a very long time. What always strikes me is that they are not as rhythmically stringent as other Bach works. I've always noticed that the low notes seem to linger a bit before the higher notes that follow. I assume this is a concession to several things, not the least of which being the difficulty of the music. I need to do some research on this.

Listening to it also made me a little sad as it reminded me of my friend Nelson, whom I knew in college. He was a viola player, and played one of the suites transposed for viola. Nelson died of a heart attack back in November 2009 somewhat suddenly. I'd reconnected with him the year before, so it was a real blow. All the same, listening to the suite this morning did remind me of good times we spent together.

What I also noticed, in listening to the suite, is that it was very relaxing; almost meditative.

2 days in a row. I'm thinking something for harpsichord tomorrow.

1. If you are old enough, are you registered to vote?
Ever since I turned 18

2. Did you vote in the November 2023 election?
No, but only because there were no state or local elections in Maryland that year.

3. Do you vote in primaries?
Yes, absolutely. I also research the candidates thoroughly so that I can make informed decisions.

4. Do you plan to vote in the November 2024 election?
I've never missed one yet, so yes.

5. Do you vote early, by mail, in person, or some other way?
I try always to vote early. Last few elections I've voted in, I've voted by mail, but this one I plan to vote in person.
