It looks like crossposting from Dreamwidth is permanently broken, due to LJ's lack of cooperation.

I won't be manually crossposting, so I'm sorry to say that that this looks like it's finally, after all these years, going to be the end of an era.

I hope that those of you who haven't already are going to come find me over on Dreamwwidth. ♥

Image10:41 pm - update
  • I had a bit of a relapse, or perhaps just another migraine, but either way - I'm sick of this! GO AWAY!

  • Also, I've had anxiety dreams before (mainly the "brakes or steering wheel on the car not working" or "tap won't shut off properly, water everywhere" kind), but last night was the first time I dreamed about getting an assignment email for an exchange I didn't remember signing up for. What the hell!

  • I'm trying to actually participate in Chinese practice over at [community profile] guardian_learning, but I'm way behind everyone else, so I'm feeling very silly about it. (I know there's no way to learn a reasonable amount of words or characters without actually studying, but I already have too many things in my life I can't keep up with. So I get in a week or two and then stop again for a few months, which is ... not ideal. On the positive side, even like that, every time I watch something I understand a little bit more, so something's happening in the language-learning part of my brain while I'm not paying attention. *g*)

  • Not that I've watched much of anything lately. I just tried to remember what the last new thing I watched was, and other than the one-episode-per-week watchalong of Imperial Coroner it was probably the new Matrix movie? And nothing else since, idk, November. I see people posting about all the things they watch, and I have no idea how they do it. (And then, of course, I go and binge-watch ten episodes a day. :p)

  • Writing is going slowly, but it is happening. Less than two weeks now to reach my January goals, but that should be plenty. :)

ETA: I meant to add - comment notifications appear to be delayed right now. Here's hoping it'll be fixed soon!

I recently tried out a recipe for pork medallions with peppercorn sauce (nice but not so great I'll make it often), and now have rather a lot of pickled green peppercorns that I should probably do something with at some point.

Anyone have favourite recipes with green peppercorns?

But first, I'm going to look at the collection and everyone else's trees! This fest is such a joy. ♥

Image04:19 pm - 2021 End-of-Year Writing Meme
This, as usual, is mostly the same meme I've done before - in January of 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016 and 2015, taken, mixed and adapted from a variety of memes and people.

Total number of posted stories in 2021: 20 (one fewer than last year - but unlike last year, none of them were drabbles, and this is still the year with the third highest number)

(However, unlike last year, I once again - like in 2018 and 2019 - didn't post so much as a single fic that wasn't for an exchange or fest.)

As I've done since 2014, I kept track of my writing in a spreadsheet which I originally got via [community profile] inkingitout and then modified for my own purposes. And I've totally failed at checking in both at [community profile] inkingitout and at Write Every Day this year, but I did write at least an alibi sentence every day - my streak since January 2015 is still unbroken. \o/

Once again too much of my year was alibi sentences - I don't even know why, other than generalised exhaustion, which has been ongoing since 2019.

Anyway, here are some word count statistics:

Total word count (posted): 74,471 - that's about 20k more than last year, and 22k more than the year before! (Not up to the nearly 98k of 2018, but still!) All thanks to [community profile] heartattackexchange, I suppose, which added 21k to my word count in December. *g*
Total word count (written): 132,536 - about 9k more than last year, which was 15k more than the year before. Still nowhere near the consistently-above-200k word counts of 2016-18, but definitely crawling upwards.
Highest monthly word count (posted): 25,252 (December) - about 8k more than last year, and still 4k below December 2019, even though I wrote a 20k monster again. *g*
Highest monthly word count (written): 37,781 (December) - about 12k more than last year's highest, about 1k below 2019's, and 12k below my best from 2018.

Most words written in a day: 7,662 (9th December) - bringing me more than 2k above last year's highest. (Nowhere near 2019's 11k, but that was very, very much a unique outlier.)
Fewest words written in a day: 1 (12th May) - at least I had a one-word alibi sentence only once this year, unlike the three times of 2020?

Months I actually posted fic: 9 - two more than last year, equal to my previous best year (2016)

more meme and numbersCollapse )

I'd like to thank the academy ...

People I couldn't have done without: [personal profile] china_shop, [personal profile] navaan, [personal profile] shadaras, and the Write Every Day crowd (even though I failed so badly at checking in all year). Thank you so much, all of you! ♥ ♥ ♥

Image02:26 pm - FIC: A Staircase, Winding (Time Engraver) [Teen]
Yuletide author reveals happened while I was asleep! I wrote Time Engraver fic again, so now I've got four Time Engraver stories up, two of them ZYLBY crossovers (this and this), and two of them not - last year's White and Marble, and this year's new one. Here it is:

**

Title: A Staircase, Winding
Fandom: L'Oréal "Time Engraver" Commercials
Characters: The Time Engraver, The woman who doesn't smile
Rating: Teen
Content tags: 2020 commercial, worldbuilding
A/N: [personal profile] topaz_eyes asked about the change in setting/aesthetic between the commercials - here's one in-universe way it might work.

Summary:

The Time Engraver snaps his fingers. A laughing woman in a red dress, a cocktail in her hand, vanishes from his workshop with new crinkles around her eyes.

Another snap of his fingers; another woman appears - and the workshop changes around him.

Image08:57 pm - last post of the year
  • State of the Dora: I've been thinking about posting this for a while, but I've been holding off due to the paranoid feeling that as soon as I said it it would go away. Anyway - shock, surprise, it turns out that brain fog, tiredness and an inability to focus are actually three separate things, not just one indistinct blob of fuzziness?! Who would have thought. :p

In short, vitamin B12 supplements made the brain fog go away, and getting to sleep in this week means I'm not as tired either. Focus is still a work in progress, though. *g*

  • Pandemic: I got my third vaccine jab yesterday! Moderna this time, and so far (30 hours later) I have no side effects other than my arm hurting, not even the tiredness I had last time. It's a more localised pain and swelling this time, too - with both previous Biontech doses, my entire upper arm was a little swollen; this time the area around the injection is swollen more, but the rest isn't (or not noticeably so). Fascinating!

Also, I got a look at the shopping district today when I came past on my daily walk, and wow, those were some crowds ...

  • Food: I was going to make scallion pancakes today ... but then I made them yesterday instead. *g* Today it was improvised hot and sour soup to use up some leftovers, and I'll have smoked salmon on bread later.

  • Writing: Still having trouble getting back in the saddle after Yuletide, but I'm going to make a serious effort to a) get as much as possible done for [community profile] fandomtrees (I have a list!) and b) write more consistently again this year. (I'll do my usual retrospective tomorrow, after Yuletide authors have been revealed.)

  • Watching: I haven't watched a single thing in what feels like forever now, other than canon revision for writing purposes. I really want to find the time for that again, too.

  • Reading: Other than fanfic, the only thing I've read recently has been rereads (mainly Nantucket Trilogy and Starfire) and the German translation of MDZS, which I'm still in the middle of. (It's a very smoothly readable translation; I'm enjoying it! My main complaint is the sloppy/nonexistent proofreading.)

  • New Year's Eve:Three hours until midnight! I'm going to watch an episode of Imperial Coroner with the group watch in a bit; that's my only plan for tonight. What's everyone else doing this New Year's Eve?

Image01:00 am - Yuletide recs for 2021
The other day I mentioned to a friend that I used to be able to go through the entire Yuletide collection on the 25th, at least for a first pass, and that it never took me more than one full evening to read everything in all the fandoms even remotely of interest to me. I can't any more - and it turns out the reason is in fact that there are a lot more fandoms in the collection that I'm sufficiently familiar with and interested in than there used to be. Not complaining! *g*

Anyway, here's an assortment of fic I enjoyed in this year's collections - 17 stories in 12 fandoms:

Fandoms: Cadfael Chronicles - Ellis Peters, Coldfire Trilogy - C. S. Friedman, 绅探 | Detective L, 天涯客 | Faraway Wanderers - priest, L'Oréal 'Time Engraver' Commercials, Legend of Good Women - Geoffrey Chaucer, 盗墓笔记重启 | The Lost Tomb Reboot, Mary Reilly - Valerie Martin, Miss Marple - Agatha Christie, Murder, She Wrote, Robot Series - Isaac Asimov, 莊子 - 莊周 | Zhuāngzǐ - Zhuāng ZhōuCollapse )

Image11:14 pm - Yuletide bounty!
Happy Yuletide, everyone!

I'm still at my mother's and don't have much internet time, so I haven't even touched the rest of the collections yet, but I got three gifts, two in the main collection and one in Madness! And they are all excellent! :D
  1. Two very different Time Engraver worldbuilding fics, with different takes on what kind of being the Time Engraver is:

    • Palimpsest (1643 words) [Teen]
      Relationship: Time Engraver & OFC
Summary: The first thing that he sees when he opens his eyes is a shattered burin.
      palimpsest
      /ˈpalɪm(p)sɛst/
      noun
a manuscript or piece of writing material on which later writing has been superimposed on effaced earlier writing.

    • Entrapping Time (1434 words) [Teen]
Relationship: Time Engraver & Bai Yu characters
Summary: As far as time stretches, the Time Engraver has been content with his tower and workshop and one-sided discussions with those on whom he works his delicate craft – the small niche time carved itself simply for being, outside yet within its intangible, implacable nature.
And then one soul sparks his curiosity.

  2. And one Detective L fic with porn for the tiny rarepair of my heart:

    Posterior Motives (2535 words) [Explicit]
    Relationship: Huo Wensi/Luo Fei
Additional Tags: Established Relationship, Pre-Canon, Dom/sub, Undernegotiated Kink, Rough Sex, Door Sex, Canon-Typical Manipulative Huo Wensi
Summary: Luo Fei is barging through his waiting room and picking the lock into his personal office, which means he’s taken silence as an invitation, which means he’s bored. Therefore, Huo Wensi thinks, he’s here for sex.

Yuletide is simply the best, and I can't wait to discover what other gems are in this year's collections. :D

Hope everyone else is having a great Yuletide too! ❤❤❤

Image01:34 pm - FIC: Worst Case Scenario (Guardian: Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan, Shen Wei & SID, Shen Wei & Ye Zun) [Teen]
[community profile] heartattackexchange author reveals happened this night! And my gift (Grimm, Nick/Renard/Juliette) turned out to be exactly by the person I thought it was. :D I'll have to write a proper rec post, because it's brilliant, but ... after Yuletide. *looks over shoulder, runs from BEARS*

And here's my own fic - 21k of early-episodes Guardian. I didn't remember until later that I'd already used the title once before, on a Doctor Who double drabble back in 2012. The danger of using established phrases!

**

Title: Worst Case Scenario
Fandom: 镇魂 | Guardian (TV)
Rating: Teen
Relationships: Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan, Shen Wei & SID team, Shen Wei & Ye Zun
Characters: Shen Wei, Zhao Yunlan, Chu Shuzhi, Guo Changcheng, Da Qing, Zhu Hong, Lin Jing, Ye Zun
Content tags: Temporary Character Death, Time Loop, (not just the canonical one), Time Loop Aftermath, Double Identity, Secret(s) Revealed, Dixing-Haixing politics, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Episode Related, Episode 4, Fix-It

Summary:

Shen Wei curved Zhao Yunlan's cold hand around the Sundial beneath his own. The Hallow lit up immediately, a golden glow that came with an oppressive hum, a heavy, black energy-laced thrumming against Shen Wei's senses.

Take whatever you need, he thought. Whatever I have, just give him back.

The Hallow's power pulsed through him, through Zhao Yunlan's body, and then it fizzled out. Shen Wei opened his eyes. Zhao Yunlan was not moving. Was not breathing. Was still - dead.

Image02:03 am - state of exchange!Dora
  1. Exchanges/Fests:

I've been meaning to make a proper update post for a while, but it's not going to happen before Yuletide reveals, so here's at least a partial one: it's been a bit of a mess lately, on the exchange front.

[community profile] femslashex had delayed reveals, and because I'm constitutionally incapable of stopping my fiddling with stories until they are live and out of my hand, that ate somewhat into my [community profile] heartattackexchange writing time. I'm happy with the story I wrote, though - including the bit I changed at the last minute. Also, it was great writing original fic again - I missed it!

Then [community profile] heartattackexchange had multiple delays, and that ate massively into the Yuletide writing period. On the other hand, I fought with the story and its revisions a lot, and tossed out a lot of words during the revision process to replace them with something completely different. (Looking at my word count spreadsheet, only 58,6% of the words I wrote actually ended up in the final version, which, uh, is not a great percentage.) The story is much better for it, though, so I can't regret it - I'm very pleased with the ultimate result. (It's still anonymous; author reveals are on the 22nd.)

So, [community profile] yuletide ... I made the deadline without too much panicking, but the story is still in need of revision, because after that I simply crashed for two days. Finally feeling awake again now! And I'm not worried about whipping my assignment into shape, for once. So today is the first day since October that I've had any time to even give thought to Yuletide treats. I originally had a huge list of potential ones; I've narrowed it down to three that are still possible, plus maybe another Madness treat if I have brain left on the 25th. We'll see how much (if any) I can still finish. Fingers crossed!

And of course after Yuletide comes [community profile] fandomtrees! I have a whole list for that as well, and am really looking forward to tackling it after the holidays.

    How's everyone else's exchange/fest life going?

  2. Other:

Once I can find a little energy and time I'm also going to go back and comment on the last few scene discussion posts over at [community profile] sid_guardian that so far I've only bookmarked. These are always so fun! Still looking forward to talking to people there.

And speaking of, sign-ups for the next round are open - not just for scene discussion posts, but for all kinds of meta, , etc. Which means I need to decide what to tackle next round! I thought I'd had an idea recently, but I can't seem to remember now. Anyone have suggestions? Here's the list of scenes that have already been tackled.

Image08:19 pm - AO3 averages meme
Last seen at [personal profile] shadaras's, [personal profile] sanguinity's and [personal profile] muccamukk's: I've enjoyed seeing this around, so here's mine.

I'm not counting works that are unrevealed or still anonymous, because that way I'm looking at exactly 200 works!

Average word count: 3,449.6 (mean) or 1,941 (median)
Average hit count: 1,379.9 (mean) or 921.5 (median)
Average kudos count: 109.5 (mean) or 75 (median)
Average number of comment threads: 6.5 (mean) or 4 (median)
Average number of bookmarks: 20.6 (mean) or 10 (median) - public bookmarks: 6 (median)

(I know no easy way to get the total number of public bookmarks, so I left that out.)

more under the cut!Collapse )

It's not really surprising that a lot of my "average" works are Doctor Who, or more precisely Doctor/Jack because that fandom and that ship defines the average by being the majority of my works. *g* (I have 87 fics tagged Doctor Who, and the next-largest, Guardian, only has 26 so far.)

Still, at first I was a bit surprised that my newer main fandoms are so underrepresented in this list. But thinking about it, Doctor Who being an old fandom and many of these works being originally or additionally posted somewhere else, even if all else were equal Guardian and Grimm both would still end up having generally "above-average" stats ...

Image05:30 pm - MDZS in German
I just preordered the first volume of the German MDZS translation, which is coming out in December, and look at this! This is actually for once a good blurb that tells you something meaningful about what the book is like:

It's going to be very weird to read it in German, but I'm hoping the language switch will also be helpful, since I don't have any preconceived opinions on how any of the fandom-specific terms should be translated. *g*
