I'm listening to u-ziq's lunatic harness, of which I only have a dubbed copy on tape. I dubbed it myself before I sold it, in case I ever wanted to listen to it again. I was inspired to do so today.
I was packing for my weekend trip to Victoria for the Eternal Egypt exhibit at the Royal BC Museum. I'm going with my girlfriend, Kat, on the victoria clipper.
As I was packing, I ran into a copy of the tape and thought to myself, "yeah, I could handle listening to that again." When Lunatic Harness first came out, I thought it was incredibly derivative and overproduced. U-Ziq is brilliant, but I just wasn't happy with that work. Listening to it now, I have a greater appreciation for it. I'm not sure my overall opinion has changed, but I can bring myself to enjoy it now.
It was released when squarepusher was doing all that d&b madness, and came out around the same time as Hard Normal Daddy. Hard to believe that was severn years ago, and to think that electronic music hasn't really progressed much in that time makes me sad. I don't know, I've been out of the scene for a while.
I picked a cd at pesudo-random the other day, "7-hurtz / electroleum." I like electro so thought it might be good, and it's ok. There are a couple of standout tracks, but it's mostly pretty average. Anyone know anything about these guys?

| ordered a notebook |
[27 Aug 2004|01:24pm] |
I'm getting the fujitsu S71010D .. 1.5ghz, 14.1" xga, 512mb, 40gb, dvd/cdrw, modem, gigabit ethernet, 802.11 a+b/g, bluetooth .. ROCK!
The place I got it looks cool, Portable One. They threw in a bunch of extras (like the bluetooth, faster HD, etc) and free shipping. Should be here wednesday, I guess.
In other news, my friends list is totally manageable now .. since getting rid of all those communities and people I wasn't reading, I no longer have to use my personal filter to see a subset of y'all.

I'm also looking for a notebook, one I can pick up or have delivered in the next week, preferably something with debian/X already on it. I know thinkpads are super hot, and they are nice machines. Any suggestions?

| Digital camera suggestions |
[25 Aug 2004|10:36am] |
This is a plea for information .. I'd like to get a digital camera, but I don't have time to sort through the endless array of products available. I want something decent, not amazingly high powered but just good. Resolution should go up to at least 1600x1200, preferably with support for uncompressed TIFFs but that's not a must. Video support would be nice and size isn't too much of an issue but it shouldn't be huge. I'm looking to spend in between $200 and $600, preferably more towards $3-400.
Any suggestions?

I went through and removed a bunch of people from my friends list that I wasn't reading anyway, and who also had never added me back. But when I removed the last bunch, it also nuked a bunch of folks that I do read (including my girlfriend!) sooo .. while I attempt to figure out if this is a bug or what happened, i'll be messing with my friends list .. so don't remove me if you see that you've been removed. I don't generally remove people that have added me without a good reason, so chances are i'm just testing things and you'll be back on shortly.

| new music |
[30 Jul 2004|10:00am] |
I got my first paycheck, so to celebrate I got some tunes at Sonic Boom. I desperately needed the new meat beat album, "in dub," so I got that. This one definitely hearkens back to Subliminal Sandwich, for sure. Very good stuff, of course. Then I found a "Best of Coldcut" cd which has a lot of their old classics .. People hold on, Doctorin' the house, etc. It also comes with the classic Autumn Leaves, which unfortunately I lost because I sold my copy of Two A.D. that has the extended remix. So nice to have a copy of that song again, although the two a.d. remix is better I think. Finally, I saw a Christian Vogel cd (tresor) called "Dungeon Master," which I'm currently listening to. Pretty typical stuff, which means its pretty good but so far unremarkable.
It'll be nice once I move and I can really start buying records again. I have a lot of catching up to do! I'm looking forward to the Decibal Festival in september, as well. It's about time we had something like this.

Great article on Gay Parenting in today's Seattle Times. Interesting to see what the fundies are saying about gay families raising children. All the usual arguments I suppose, but this was a nice piece.

| Tonight at Liquifi |
[08 Jun 2004|04:34pm] |
Liquifi is a free weekly hosted by Liquid Lounge @ Experience Music Project. They host some of the best DJs in Seattle and beyond, and tonight is no exception.
Tonight, June 8th, at 10PM (or perhaps later, they seem to have been starting a bit late)
Rennie Pilgrem (TCR-UK) Subconscious (KWS-SEA)
I'm not sure if you've heard of Rennie Pilgrem but he is a fantastic breaks DJ and I am not going to miss the opportunity to see him. Subconscious, of course, is always fun as well.
Don't miss this!

| So much to do ... |
[29 May 2004|01:36pm] |
A bunch of different events going on tonight:
Markus Nikolai at Baltic Room - some guy from germany i've never heard of, on a label I've never heard of (perlon records). Could be good, but its $12. Anyone heard this guy?
The Wayshower - to my surprise there is a starborne event tonight. osiris vs manahan, naha vs electrokid, and more.. I want to go to this, but its $20! Crazy.
House at merchants' cafe - this looks most promising. no price listed, so I'm guessing cheap to free. just "fuckin proper house music," which is what i'm in the mood for.
there's some lame shit going on at the hall, but I hate that place. Sandman is playing, though, and I like him. still, not worth it.
what are other people doing tonight, party or otherwise?
