Well, I was for the first 30 seconds!
After all the email said this:
I am writing to you on behalf of Oprah’s Manhattan Book Club, a fast growing network of passionate readers, engaged members, and celebrated authors in Manhattan and beyond. My name is Clara Pennington, and I serve as the Book Organizer for the club.
First and foremost, I must commend you on your acclaimed body of work, particularly the spine tingling collection, 44 Cemetery Road: The Best of Tunku Halim … This collection of your very best stories, exploring the darkness that “hides in all shapes and guises,” is exactly the kind of gripping and sophisticated literary horror we look to champion and showcase.
With such effusive praise, who wouldn’t be sucked in!
After all Clara knew the dark characteristics of my writing and even went on to quote specific phrases from my books. So she must have read my stuff, right?
And then it hit me … this is too good to be true.
I should have heeded the warning in the second paragraph: the reference to my 2007 retrospective collection: 44 Cemetery Road. Why no mention of my later books: My Lovely Skull and Other Skeletons (2022) or Vermillion Eye: 25th Anniversary Edition (2025)?
The email then went on to describe their platform and the unique opportunity to “Gain Visibility”, “Engage Directly” and “Receive Dedicated Promotion”.
Who wouldn’t have been intrigued? I certainly was.
I showed it to my better half and, the fact that the email seemed to know my work well, my better half thought it to be genuine.
But I had my doubts. Especially since there was a request for a “Small Organizational Fee”. So I checked online only to discover that other authors had received similar emails and had not only replied to the emails but had joined their “community group” to find out their bona fides.
Conclusion: it’s a scam!
This article was particularly helpful: https://jasonsanford.substack.com/p/genre-grapevine-book-club-scams-are
This was the first time I’ve been confronted with a scam using AI. The fact that it was so compelling shows us how much more dangerous the world is with scammers using all the benefits and persuasive powers of AI to cheat us.
So for all your authors out there, tread carefully and beware.
The world is more dangerous place.
I didn’t reply and the next day received a 2nd email from Clara telling me how she would be honoured to include me their lineup. Who could rebuff such obsequiousness?
Then I reminded myself … it is a scam.
The next day, I received a 3rd email, this AI-written one was even more compelling since it now referred to me once being a “nominee for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award and having [my] novel, Vermillion Eye, used as a study text at the National University of Singapore”. Not only that but it pointed to my novel Juriah’s Song and how the “premise a young rock star pursued by a female spectre who flees to the seaside village where he once attempted suicide is immediately gripping” and went on to effusively praise it.
Surely, with my ego stroked so deliciously, I have no choice but to reply and pay that “small organisational fee”? Well, perhaps not.
Maybe I’ll receive another compelling AI-written email tomorrow and then … oh dear, what am I to do? So please, Clara, stop doing what you’re doing. This writer of such “critical acclaim” can only put up so much resistance.
My better half says I should block her and that would be the sensible thing to do.
But the praise … oh, the praise … I want more of it!
If only it was real!
Here are the 3 emails below:
Dear Tunku Halim,
I am writing to you on behalf of Oprah’s Manhattan Book Club, a fast growing network of passionate readers, engaged members, and celebrated authors in Manhattan and beyond. My name is Clara Pennington, and I serve as the Book Organizer for the club.
First and foremost, I must commend you on your acclaimed body of work, particularly the spine tingling collection, 44 Cemetery Road: The Best of Tunku Halim. As arguably Malaysia’s most prolific author in the English language, your unique contribution to supernatural thrillers is highly compelling.
We are captivated by the way this collection brings horror and suspense into everyday settings the “tangled rows of terrace houses,” the “shifting shadows of watching trees,” and even the “gleaming corridors of the shopping mall.” The chilling variety of evil you introduce from the bloodthirsty vampire and tongue-ripping cat to the deadly sexy maid and knife-wielding psychopath demonstrates a masterful range within the horror and thriller genres. Given your impressive background, which includes a nomination for the 1999 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award and having your novel Vermillion Eyeused as a study text at the National University of Singapore, we recognize your work as both popular and critically significant. This collection of your very best stories, exploring the darkness that “hides in all shapes and guises,” is exactly the kind of gripping and sophisticated literary horror we look to champion and showcase.

We are highly captivated by your latest supernatural thriller, Juriah’s Song. The premise a young rock star pursued by a female spectre who flees to the seaside village where he once attempted suicide is immediately gripping. The novel masterfully weaves together themes of past trauma, redemption, horror, and seduction with the introduction of a repulsive shaman and the haunting question: “does the lovely Juriah mean to haunt him to death?” The overarching theme of exploring the choices one would make if they could live their life again elevates this from a pure horror story to a profound psychological thriller. This potent blend of dark secrets, romance, and supernatural suspense is exactly the kind of resonant and gripping work we look to champion and showcase.
