qcd/RMD Donations
Maximize your impact in Uganda by giving directly from your IRA!
Starting at age 70½, a QCD is a direct transfer of money from your IRA provider, payable to a qualified charity. QCDs can be counted toward satisfying your required minimum distributions (RMDs) for the year, as long as certain rules are met. (See our Quick Facts below!)
Step 1: Login to your account with your IRA custodian
Step 2: Enter the eligible charity, their mailing address and your donation amount
Step 3: Review and submit. Once your donation has been submitted, your account portal should help you track your donations progress and UWP will let you know when it is received.

Quick Facts about QCDs:
- Age Requirement: You must be at least 70½ years old at the time the distribution is made.
Annual Limit: You can donate up to $108,000 per year. This limit is per individual, so a married couple can each make a QCD of up to this amount from their own IRAs. - Direct Transfer: The funds must be transferred directly from your IRA custodian to the charity (a check made out to the charity and delivered by you is also acceptable). The money cannot pass through your personal bank account.
- Eligible Accounts: QCDs can be made from traditional IRAs, inherited IRAs, and inactive SEP or SIMPLE IRAs. Employer-sponsored plans like 401(k)s and 403(b)s do not qualify unless the funds are first rolled over into an eligible IRA.
- Qualified Charities: Donations must go to an IRS-qualified 501(c)(3) public charity.
- No “Quid Pro Quo”: You cannot receive any personal benefit in exchange for the donation, such as tickets to a gala, a charity auction item, or a membership.
- Tax Benefits: The distributed amount is excluded from your taxable income (it is not a deduction). This exclusion can help lower your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI), which may reduce your Medicare premiums or the taxable portion of your Social Security benefits.
- RMD Satisfaction: A QCD counts toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for the year (if you are age 73 or older and subject to RMDs).
- Timing: The QCD must be completed by December 31 of the calendar year for it to count for that tax year.
