Week 5: Note Taking & FINAL Class Paper/Presentation

Today we talked about a few different type of note-taking strategies, including outlining, Cornell Method, SQ3R (to prepare to take notes) and what all of you do for your college classes. It is important to get yourself organized, pre-read (or skim) your assigned readings, review posted PPTs, and review your notes on a regular basis. If you can practice these note-taking strategies NOW, you will be an expert at taking notes & reviewing lecture information by the time you get to your advanced college credits and challenging course material.

We also introduced the FINAL Major/Career Research Paper & Video Presentation (you can download a copy of the assignment from Blackboard Learn). This final project has a few different pieces to it, so please USE THE CHECKLIST and start mapping out your dates well BEFORE it is due on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 by 10:30 AM to a dropbox on Blackboard Learn. You will work on the following segment for this assignment, so start mapping out your schedule to set some dates for each section:

Week 4: We’ve Got Personality (MBTI) & A Road Trip Ahead!

In today’s class we introduced the personality attributes based on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). The MBTI assessment is a psychometric questionnaire designed to measure psychological type (described by Carl Jung) and how people perceive the world and make decisions.

In learning about the psychological types and preferences, we have gotten and idea of where preferences lie for the energizing preferences extroversion (E) and introversion (I), the attending preferences are sensing (S) and intuition (N), the deciding preferences are thinking (T) and feeling (F) and the living preferences are judgment (J) and perception (P). We have also started the conversation on how MBTI types exhibit particular strengths and weaknesses in the workplace environments. This conversation will continue, so please hang onto YOUR MBTI Assessment report for future class use, and to share your thoughts on your WP Post #4 in 300 words minimum blog post DUE by 11:59 pm TONIGHT (9/17) answer the following questions using your MBTI REPORT:

  • Compare and contrast your Most Popular Occupations (p. 9) & Least Popular Occupations (p. 10) for your MBTI. Is this accurate? Thoughts? Please describe.

Week 3: Learning Styles & Career Research

Today in class we will start looking at the VARK and how your learning style can impact your classes in college. This will help as you attend lectures, work on labs, complete assignments, and take tests during your first semester at UNT. It’s good to know how you learn and what works for you. Do you know in what environment you learn the best? The ideal learning style varies from person to person. Find out what works for you!

The second part of class we will discuss what’s the value of a major and how to effectively research careers of interest. There have been a couple of interested posts on NPR’s Planet Money about the Value of a Major, so I thought I would share and get your opinion/thoughts:

  1. The Most (And Least) Lucrative College Majors, In 1 Graph
  2. Why Women (Like Me) Choose Lower-Paying Jobs

In terms of looking at occupations and careers, there seems to be a lot of different information online. For this sort of research, I would rely on more than just Google. It’s important to  thinking critically about where your resources come from and who is writing it. Here are a few useful links we’ll talk about in class today:

Today you will be exploring the resources and services on campus with your #ugstSTORY team. Be sure to TWEET & take photos (Yes you can use Instagram) using the hashtag #ugstSTORY. Share what you find useful on campus during the scavenger hunt in 140 characters or less.

In thinking about YOUR top 3 values that you tweeted last week…

What My #ugstSTORY Class Values
We will start looking at how these values apply to what you are interested in studying or working with in the future. To help you make the “right decisions now” for later, we’re going to explore the open road with the Road Trip Nation (RTN) project. Many higher ed students have an idea or inkling of what they want to do, but most are not sure about their academic options, career path planning, and helpful resources to support their decision-making process. Here’s a little history about The Roadtrip Nation Story:

For UNT students who enter into the undecided/undeclared program at UNT, the Office for Exploring Majors [where I work] utilizes the Roadtrip Nation (RTN) resources and has a  RTN project as part of the UGST 1000 – First Year Seminar class.

The Open Road for #UGST1000 Course Design The RTN project helps students explore their personal, academic, and career path. More importantly, it allows them to learn that there is more than one path to obtain their goals and dreams. In picking up  Roadtrip Nation: A Guide to Discovering Your Path in Life and Finding the Open Road: A Guide to Self-Construction Rather Than Mass Production. Our class will be using Finding the Open Road stories and interviews (posted online) to help our #ugstSTORY find our way.

To get you started we’re going to use the “Do It Yourself” section of the Roadtrip Nation book to help us explore using the Roadtrip Nation Manifesto:

  1. First, Find Your Red Rubber Ball – What inspires you? What is your passion? Identifying interests, values, and likes.
  2. Whom Should You Meet? – tips on how to find people, being resourceful, using your personal network, how to reach out to new people
  3. Getting the Meeting – cold calls, the pitch, being persistent, communication strategies
  4. Preparing for the Interview – researching the person, their company, their work experience
  5. In the Meeting – what to talk about, suggested questions, informational interview samples, interview/meeting etiquette
  6. Closing – ending a meeting, sending thanks, developing a mentoring relationship

Week 2: What’s On Your Bucket List (Big Goals)?

Last class we discussed and shared ideas about WHY you are in college. We talked about different university expectations about campus life, classes, challenges, and things you might discover in your first year and first semester at UNT.

You wrote A Love Letter To College Freshman to your future self – your end of first semester self to be exact. Now we want to talk about some bigger goals that you want to achieve while in your undergraduate academic career. Get ready to  fill your bucket, as you draft and share YOUR  “Bucket List”. This list of at least 10 items will include what you want to accomplish over the next few years in university and beyond. What are some of your BIG GOALS? Hello UGST 1000.817!

Welcome to UGST 1000 – First Year Seminar and the UGST 1000.817 class blog! Both myself, and your Peer Mentor, Heather Mund, are looking forward to the semester ahead! Want to get to know us? Check out our introduction page.

During the semester we’ll be spending some quality time together on Tuesday and Thursday from 11 am – 12: 20 pm in Wooten Hall, Room 118. To help you explore your major/career options, we will be using a few online resources to help you tell your story and connect to your interests on campus.
