James Kinsley is a writer based in Thorpe Hamlet, where he lives with his wife and two blind cats, less than ten miles from the village where he was born.

Writing was always his ambition since a very young age, but it finally came together for him in 2020 when, on furlough during the pandemic, he completed Playtime’s Over, his debut novella. This was published by Propolis in 2021. The book’s themes revolve around mental health, a subject close to his heart, as he has suffered from clinical depression for all of his adult life.

He moved from Propolis to Deixis Press, with whom he published Greyskin in 2023 and Parallels in 2025, answering to his love for genre fiction. Greyskin was a Finalist for the 2023 Page Turner Awards. It’s Hard to Tell You This, an intimate novella more akin to Playtime’s Over, was also published by Deixis in 2025.

He has also written for The Independent, The Bookseller and Sci-fi Now.

He self-publishes sci-fi adventures under the name Ray Adams. There have been five Ray Adams books to date, with a sixth, Behind the Wall, due for publication sometime in 2026.

Making money from writing is hard and while it’s not why we do it, obviously if we can, it frees us up to do more. If you’ve enjoyed any of my output and wish to throw a tip my way, it all goes to back into promoting my work.
