My Chinese Family!!

My Chinese name is 刘珊婷 (pronounced: Liu Shan Ting)。I love my name very much! Image I met Jenny very first and she introduced me to her husband, Leo Yang and her 8 year-old girl, Angel in the English she knew. I couldn’t help but think to myself that they appeared to be the cutest little Chinese family I had ever seen. Although the husband only knows a few words in English, I could immediately tell he was a really kind and a humorous guy. Angel is extremely shy but knows a little bit of English. I decided that they know the perfect amount of English. They knew just enough English so that I can practice my Chinese with them and we can still clarify and not have too many misunderstandings.

Jenny made me and two of my roommates breakfast! They call it (zhou) but the best way I can describe it is rice soup. They also had fried eggs and steamed buns. It was so yummy and we really got to practice our Chinese with them. One thing that I am still laughing about (and I am sure our new Chinese friends are still laughing as well) is when they asked us a question. For some reason all of us thought how did you come to China. In the moment we were all too excited that we knew the word and we didn’t think of how strange the question was. All three of us said Fei Ji in unison and made hand actions for a plane. The old woman and the two parents started laughing as politely as possible but we knew that we misunderstood them. All morning at random times the old woman would start chuckling softly and mumble “fei ji” with a small smirk and a shake in her head. Later on Jenny asked us in English how we get to school everyday. I hope that wasn’t the question she was asking before. We definitely don’t get to school everyday by plane. I can see why that would make the old woman laugh.

After breakfast, we sat down with the Tv on. It was set to a basketball game. This wasn’t surprising at all considering the fact that everyone in China loves basketball. After only a moment we realized it was the Jazz vs. Laker game! We were seriously watching the JAZZ game! Annie looked at her watch and calculated what the time would be in Utah. Sure enough it was perfect timing for when the Jazz game would be playing. We couldn’t help but wonder if we were watching it the same time as everyone at home! The dad, Leo Yang, LOVES basketball. He tried to tell us in English and it was the funniest thing. He said, “Wo… Wo, LOVE this game!” as he pointed to the tv screen.

Image My Chinese Parents are wonderful. We just named Leo Yang and he loves his new English name. His new name is Brian. I laughed so hard when we first told him. We had a few other suggestions and it was obvious that he didn’t like the others too much. When we mentioned Brian, his eyes got a little bigger and he turned his head upward as if he had just received personal revelation and then he said “brian…” in an enchanted voice. Then he turned to us and said “like Coby in NBA”. That made us both laugh when we realized the connection he was making was to Coby O’Bryant, the basketball player. He really does LOVE basketball. After we explained the difference between O’Bryant and Brian and gave him the option of a name he smiled and said, “okay, okay, I like Brian.” It made me happy to know that we found a name that he was so honored to have. He really is a jokester and I love it. Image Jenny's friend just got married so she invited Kristy and I to go to the wedding. It was really interesting. Very different from any weddings I have been to. One crazy thing, we were offered wine while we were there. Real wine… That has never happened to me before. I am pleased at how easy it was to turn down. Even with lots of questions on Jenny’s part I felt good about saying no. Thank you to my AMAZING parents at home for teaching me well at a young age. The first time we met they offered us tea and were a little surprised when we told them that we don’t drink tea. It just goes to show how sweet Jenny is because when the waiter’s came around to our table in the beginning and immediately Jenny told them to bring us Cola instead of tea. Then later on they came around with little glasses of Wine and asked us if we wanted some. Thank goodness I new the Chinese word for wine. I told Jenny that we didn’t want to drink it but thank you anyway. She respected that answer and then a few moments later turned to me and asked if she could ask me a question. Then she said, “How old are you?” When I told her I was 19 her face became confused and she said, “So, you are old enough to drink wine.” I thought it was very interesting that she should think that would be my only reason. Then her eyes got big and she said, “Ah, you don’t like it.” That made me kind of chuckle, and then I responded gently, “I have actually never tried it. I just don’t want to try it.” She nodded silently as if she was starting to understand. Later on that night someone invited everyone to stand and make a ‘cheers’. I was impressed to notice that Jenny, instead of grabbing her wine glass chose her cola cup like Kristy and I. She is so kind and considerate. She really must wonder what kind of 19 year olds are serving in China and don’t drink tea or wine.  Image I am happy to have their chinese family name in my name! :) They told me that they are trying to get Visas to visit America. I really hope they can and I would love treating them around to all my favorite places. They are a very sweet family.  Image

Just a few days ago Jenny came and picked Kristy and I up from our apartment and brought us over to her house. Angel was upstairs and Brian had to take care of his mom (the old woman on the far left), so Kristy and I sat and talked with Jenny for a few hours. It was so much fun talking to her because the conversation was in Chinese half the time and in English half the time. So we really got to practice our Chinese and I learned so much.  She took us shopping for food and then we went back to her house and she taught us how to cook a bunch of Chinese food. I love spending time with their family cause they make us speak Chinese the majority of the time. I am going to improve a bunch in the next two months solely because of them.

Brian is so hilarious. I love his facial expressions in reaction to everything. It is nice that he is so big in his actions because he doesn’t speak very much English at all. I think he is impressed and pleased by how much I know because he talks a lot to me and always gets the happiest looks on his face when we understand each other.

They discovered how much I love Martial Arts and so Jenny offered to teach us Tai Chi. I wonder if Brian has ever studied Martial Arts because he got really interested when I said that I could do it. I told him I have studied Changquan and I think he was surprised I knew the Chinese word for it. Jenny taught us a few steps for Tai Chi and I think I caught on really quickly. I feel as though my form was good enough and they could tell I have done Kung Fu before.

Chinese Gong Fu in CHINA!!

Image This is my SWEET Kung Fu Instructor Spring (xiao) Bai. Spring really prides himself in his students and wants us to be really dedicated. Every time we go to class he tells us, "you must practice 100 times day. become better. become stronger." We started going two days a week and every once in a while he adds another class that he expects us to come to. Now he wants us to come Monday night, Wednesday night, Friday night, Saturday morning and night, and Sunday morning. As much as I would love to go everyday we have committed to going three times a week. Image This is my other Kung Fu Instructor Josh. We named him Josh simply because we can't pronounce his real name. We have become such good friends and he loves to help me with my form. Just last week we sparred each other. He is so incredibly quick and I had nothing on him but it was a lot of fun and good practice. Image
In this one ^ we are posing for a picture that Josh wants to use for his flyers. Look how Legit we look... haha
ImageImage
Every practice, Spring and Josh go around and push us down in our splits. They push down so hard it seems ruthless. Each time I get a little bit closer and closer to the ground. Spring pulled out his camera and Josh got really excited so he pushed me all the way down and held me there! haha  It felt so weird actually touching the ground. Now I am working on jumping into them.... We'll see how that goes...
ImageImage
I am also learning the Art of the Wushu Fan. Each Saturday morning I can go down to the basketball court and practice with all the old ladies. I must say I am so thankful I have the basic form of Martial Arts down because I am able to learn all of this so much faster. Five months is not enough time to learn everything I want to learn.
Image
I had to get a picture with them!! I love the Wushu Fan so much!
Image
Spring came to our kindergarten for Chinese night and taught us a small form. I still can't believe I am really learning Chinese Kung Fu in CHINA! :)

National Chinese Lion Head Competition

Image

Teams from all over China came to Zhongshan this year to compete in the National Chinese Lion Head Competition. The team consists of two people underneath the dragon costume and others using drums, symbols, and other percussion instruments to make music. It is easy to mistake the four legs underneath the costume as actually belonging to the dragon. The men jump back and forth between posts with such skill and confidence making the lion head and body seem incredibly lifelike. The dragon jumps from post to post lifted anywhere from 4 feet to 15 feet. Much strength is required for the person in the back. He is constantly lifting the front person into the air and jumping forward setting the front person precisely on the correct posts. This action makes the Lion look like it is jumping front feet first into the air and then back feet

Image

It is such a dangerous and difficult sport and yet the teams perform with such skill that could fool anyone into believing it was simple. The point of the dance is the Lion is hungry and wants to find food but there is too much danger surrounding him. He must get past all the danger to find the flower and eat. Many teams fell and yet there were also those that put out almost perfect scores. The audience hold its' breath time after time as the dragon drops himself over a post, hanging on with just two feet and then gracefully stands himself back up again.

I had an appreciation for Lion head dancing before this. I purchased the Wong Fei Hung movies and Jet Li is really good at Lion head dancing. He actually takes part in Lion head dances in a few of my movies. It is really exciting to watch on the movies but I have a whole new appreciation for it now.

This picture is of Jet Li playing Wong Fei Hung. This is probably my favorite of all the movies I have bought in China so far and anyone who knows me knows how much I love Jet Li! :)

Guilin/Yangshuo -> Bamboo boats and rootbeer floats

Image
This is me and my girl friends setting off on our bamboo boat ride a long the Li River. It was a little chilly but, in my opinion, it was perfect with a light jacket. Our guide didn't speak any English but I suspect he thought we were a silly bunch of girls.
Tiann, Jodi, Jessica, me and Kylee.
The river ride was beautiful and we got to ride a
long it for about an hour.
Image Image
I am so happy to be here! Yangshuo is so pretty.

We saw a couple getting married on the side of the river. As cute as they are I think this picture is really funny. It looks like the groom is peaking around the rock like they are playing tag or something...

The first part of the trip-Guilin/Yangshuo!

Image
We are so excited to embark on our Journey to Guilin!! I am so happy I went with Tiann there isn't anybody here that I would have rather gone with! She is one of my best friends! We had so much fun!
Image
This picture cracks me up! If you look to the side of my friends, Jessica and Jodi, all the Chinese people are totally staring at us. Tiann purposely took this picture to the side so that she could capture all the stares. This is a daily thing.
Image
The sleeper buses were full of strange experiences. They are pretty dirty and they are cram packed with people. I actually got really sick while on the bus. I should have taken airbourne. Nobody there spoke english so we were on a ride completely blind not knowing what was going on. We had to make a few stops.
Image
One of our stops was really sketchy. When we stopped the
bus driver came back and led us off the bus. It was really dark outside so we had no way of knowing where we were. The driver and a bunch of other Chinese men motioned us to follow them back into this alleyway. It is a good thing there were so many of us in our group. If it was just Tiann and I, there is no way I would have considered following them.
As we followed the dark alley I couldn't help but feel like I was one of the mice in the movie 'Fiveil Goes West". Oh how scary... We were led behind a restaurant to use a bathroom. Let me tell you, I saw things that made me never want to eat at a Chinese restaurant again... but I have. I was astounded to discover that the bathrooms were no more than a thigh high separation wall between holes that run into the same gutter. I will definitely love gas station bathrooms after this trip. I have never seen so many behiney's in my life...
Image
We got to rent bikes and ride them through the beautiful mountains in Yangshuo. It was so much fun! Thank goodness, I had a little bell on my bike. The traffic laws in China are so much different from the laws in America. Bikes, motorbikes, cars, buses and people go around on the street honking and lane changing and weaving around everyone else. It is scary trying to get used to it but I believe I did well thanks to my awareness and little bell.
Image
The mountains here are incredible. We got to see so many beautiful views and we had a lot of fun riding together as a group.
Yangshuo is mostly farms. You pass farm after farm and you see old men and old women working out in the hot sun with their grandchildren strapped to their backs.
It really is humbling to know that is all they can do.
ImageImageTiann and I on a bridge looking over the Li River. You can see three bamboo boats on the river and the beautiful mountains behind us.

Getting ready to go into the mud/water caves. Tiann and I bought cheap matching T-shirts so that we could get them all muddy. We were so excited!

Inside the cave hiking towards the mud pool.
Image ImageThis old women was selling little sandals that she made. We bought some from her to wear in the mud caves and I couldn't resist getting a picture of her.

Oops...

Sorry about my last post. I tried laying my pictures out differently and I don't think it worked very well. The descriptions are in order of the pictures left to right, top to bottom. Thanks and I hope you enjoy the pictures!

The kids I love so much. :)

Image
Me and my favorite little Josh! :) Every single morning before opening he runs to me and gives me a huge hug and then drags me over to wear he is assigned to stand. He makes me stand by him all through opening and he always wants to hold my hand. I love him so much. I decided that he looks a lot like Li Lian Jie (Jet Li) anyone agree? He even loves to do Wushu. It makes me laugh when I see him throwing out some random part of a form when he is just standing around. He is my kind of kid. You all know how much I love the Martial Arts.

Echurro is a little Japanese boy at our school. At first he had a really hard time cause he couldn't understand the Chinese teachers or the English teachers but he has improved so much and now he loves the school.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Image
Peter is such a wild spirit. Just look at him! I love just playing with him outside of class.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Image
Isabella is in the oldest class and she can be the biggest pill in the world. She is just really stubborn and when she decides she does not want to do something she DOES NOT WANT TO DO SOMETHING. I have been trying to work past it but I still haven't really figured her out. She can be so much fun outside of the classroom! Its strange how a child can be so difficult and yet you still love them so much.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Image
Jennifer is such a silly character. The kids are asked to change their shoes when they go out to play or when they go to gym. Jennifer always wears these bright pink sparkly high heel shoes for gym.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Image
Here is a really cute picture of Leo!! :) I know I uploaded one of him below but I think you will all appreciate this one! He is such a goof ball. I love him!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Image
Julia is one of the little babies in our Class A (non ILP). She is so adorable and she is always actively participating. She loves singing "twinkle twinkle little star" more than anything and she will request it over and over again even if we have sung it three times in a row. haha
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Image
Isabella had a Birthday!! Look at her little birthday crown.. haha The Chinese cakes are a lot different from our cake at home. They have tons and tons of fruit inside and on top of it. I am not a huge fan of fruit in cake but it is kinda fun.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Image
Tony is such a sweetheart. Most of the older boys are absolute pills when they want to be but Tony is always so wonderful. He loves sitting my me in class and so he will be really obvious about how good he is being in the morning that way he can be the first to sit down and purposely pick the chair nearest to my bag.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Image
Josh in cooking class wearing one of the cute aprons that one of the women in my ward made as a donation. The kids love the aprons! The first time I pulled them out the kids went crazy! Cooking is their favorite class and the aprons only make it better!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Image
Celine is really really smart and she is so kind to everyone. I am always so impressed by her. She LOVES to teach me Chinese and she thinks it is so funny when I will try to copy her. She says, "Teacher, No Chinese!" and then I pretend like I am really embarrassed like I forgot and that makes her laugh a bunch! She is really good at getting the other kids to talk. If I try to get one of the kids to talk and they won't Celine will go and whisper something in their ear and get them to participate. Every teacher wants a student like Celine.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Image
These are some of the kids from my Saturday class. It is too bad that I don't get to teach them very often. They are so fun! The two right beside me on my left and right are my two best students. All the other students for some reason or another want to do what they do. It is a good thing they like me are on my side because they get all the other kids to listen to me. :) I love them!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Image
I think these two, Angel and Josh, are kinda "going out" if you can even call it that. haha They are always holding hands and Josh is nicer to her than any other kid. It is too bad we have to separate them into two separate classes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Image
Kenny is one of the older boys. He is smart but doesn't like to talk a lot because he is very shy. We have gotten him to get a lot more involved lately and he has been talking a lot more. You just have to give him a little more special attention and then he will be interested. He is so adorable.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Image
Okay, I say that I love every kid, but there is a huge space in my heart for Leo. Oh boy. How can I describe Leo? Leo has the cutest facial expressions in the entire world. You can't help but just melt every time he looks at you. My favorite is when he puckers up his big lips with a little smile and flares his little nose holes. Oh I wish I had a picture. What a cutie!
He is so loving too! He just runs up to me, "Teacha! Teacha! Teacha Tay!" and gives me a huge hug around my thighs.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Image
Travis is such a sneaky boy. He is always lurking about and trying to scare the teachers. He really likes to be lovey dovey but will act like he is tough and doesn't like it. It is way funny cause he will walk up to you sneakily with this glare on his face and then he'll just give you a hug. At first I was a little nervous by him but now it just makes me laugh. They all have such fun personalities. I love each of my kids so much.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Image
I love Nathan! At first he was so shy and would not talk to anyone. (most of the kids are really shy at first...) and now he is so fun in class. He loves to sing the songs we have learned. It is funny because anytime I teach his class I know that I don't need to think in advance which songs I want to sing with them because I know that Nathan will make suggestion after suggestion.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Image
This is Ricky in the first Class A (non ILP). He speaks surprisingly well and loves to participate in class.
I can never get a good picture of him cause every time I pull my camera out he jumps up and grabs it from me. ha
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Image
Cute little Scott is trying to open the Peanut Butter jar. You better believe the kids just LOVE peanut butter.  Every time I get it out all of them get so excited and immediately listen. It is a really nice way to get their attention.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Image
We give tokens to those kids who are speaking the selected BMC's and they save them for certain prizes. Josh was in a different class and had been saving his tokens. Well one day after school he came running to me and gave me a ring. He had been saving his tokens just to buy me a ring! That made me so happy!
