Why Donate to Verily Magazine?
The world often tells women that we have to hustle for our worth—that we are the sum of our money, status, youth, and narrow beauty standards as dictated by a sex-obsessed, consumerist culture. In other words, the world tells women who they should be.
Our mission at Verily is to make it easier for women to be who they truly are.
Verily is dedicated to combating the objectification of women in word and image by nurturing our readers’ sense of intrinsic dignity and worth and helping them find contentment and authentic confidence in their daily lives.
Thank you for being a part of our work—we couldn’t do it without you!

Verily’s History
Verily was founded in 2012 by women in New York City who felt overlooked by women’s media. Known as the first women’s magazine committed to never Photoshop women, we have been creating empowering content for more than a decade. After an initial year in print, Verily went entirely digital in 2014. Seeing the negative effects of a high online-media diet on women, in 2022, we made the countercultural move to return to our roots as a non-profit quarterly print publication.
Our return to print is an invitation to disconnect from the constant churn of content in newsfeeds; we want to support our readers’ well-being and help them connect more deeply with the things that truly matter.
Our goal is to help women develop healthy and fulfilling relationships with themselves and those around them so that they can thrive and share their unique gifts with the world.
Verily’s Ethos
A heart for authenticity and putting our readers’ well-being first: Verily means “truly,” and our aim is to realistically and respectfully enter into the cultural discourse about beauty and womanhood without losing sight of truth.
We do this by recognizing that beauty isn’t narrow, isn’t an ideal or a work of fiction. Instead of perpetuating stereotypes about beauty or encouraging an obsession with gossip culture, Verily has honest conversations about what it means to be a woman in today’s world.
We meet women where they’re at and give them the tools they need to thrive and find contentment and fulfillment in their daily lives, whatever their life circumstances.
Our ground-breaking no-Photoshop policy: In keeping with our values and mission, we have a strict commitment to never objectify people in word or image, and thus we never retouch the skin color, texture, or body shape of the people who appear in the photographs we use online or in print. We were the first women’s print magazine to commit to a no-Photoshop policy when we launched in 2012, prompting praise from LeanIn.org, Queen Latifah, and others.
Why is Our Work Needed?
The objectification of women is an issue we still need to highlight and fight by telling women’s stories:
In a study of print media, researchers at Wesleyan University found that on average, across 58 different magazines, 51.8 percent of advertisements that featured women portrayed them as sex objects.
While boys and men are victims as well, most individuals identified as trafficked for both labor and commercial sex are women and girls. For every 10 victims detected globally, five are adult women and two are girls, according to a report released in 2021 by the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime.
Estimates published by WHO indicate that globally about 1 in 3 (30 percent) of women worldwide have been subjected to either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime. Worldwide, women make up an estimated 85 to 90 percent of sweatshop workers.
Studies have found that women do more domestic labor than their male counterparts, even when they have high-powered full time jobs, which results in women enjoying an average of 5 hours less leisure time each week than men.
Meanwhile, we’re only just discovering how much medical research has overlooked women over the years. Women’s fertility is still an underfunded and under-researched area, a fact that forces women who want to understand their bodies and hormones to look for answers away from mainstream medical sources.
Mothers face discrimination and judgment from society whether they work outside the home or take the lead at home with domestic labor and childcare.
It’s no wonder we’re facing record levels of burnout, depression, and loneliness.
The truth is, the kind of media that has traditionally been available to women has been failing us. Verily wants to facilitate vital conversations around the struggles and joys of womanhood, addressing our needs and desires with authenticity and sensitivity.

Verily’s Impact & Future
“In a world that’s all about new information and the latest trends, Verily inspires me to slow down. To cozy up on my back porch and think about the meaningful things in life. Verily is a manifestation of the heart of woman. It inspires me toward beauty, gently encourages me in relationships of all kinds, stands firm in the truth, and welcomes me into a nourishing place. Verily transforms hearts.” —Lucy Backman
To date, Verily has been featured in outlets like Upworthy, Huffington Post and LeanIn.org for our ground-breaking Photoshop policy. We have an average of just over half a million search hits a month to our website, and since our transition in 2023 to a nonprofit, we are focused on expanding our print readership around the United States and beyond to help women switch up their habits and care for their mental health.
The Cost of Running Verily & How Your Donation Can Help
We want to reach as many women as possible by distributing the magazine far and wide, from bookstores to airports to hair salons and beyond. We want to empower women everywhere with media that helps them recognize their inherent dignity, not salacious clickbait that continues to damage and distract from women’ true worth. Our goal isn’t to sell a magazine—it is to change the culture.
At the heart of our mission is a simple message: women deserve better.
