Working on a codebase now that has this defensive coding pattern everywhere:
List xs = ...
if (xs != null)
for (Object x : xs) {
...
}
Please excuse me while I go gouge my eyes out. See here for enlightenment as to why this is extremely harmful... |

Warning, programming talk follows:
Thinking about jumping ship to .NET. (But not right away.) Seems to me that the JVM and the CLR are both moving in the direction of hosting functional languages (F# in Microsoft's case, and various languages in the case of MLVM.) CLR is closer to the finish line because they were multi-language from the start and they've had nascent support for tail-call optimization since the beginning. Sounds to me like JVM will not have tail-call until Java 8 at the earliest.
So, long ago there was this prediction that eventually everyone would be using Lisp and Smalltalk eventually, once computers got fast enough. Well, substitute Ocaml and F# and this might be coming true in a few years. Next Big Thing? |

Yeah, so my uncle Mike lives in Anchorage. And I don't know why, for all these years, I've been looking at all that Alaska ski pr0n and not making it an immediate priority to go up and visit...
...so, Lisa and I just booked tickets up there for second week in March. We will be resort skiing at Alyeska, touring at Turnagain Pass, and maybe doing an ice climb or two. Woot! |

one not-so-nice thing about working in new york city is that every so often, something happens to remind you which side of the tracks you really live on.
for example, the Federal Reserve special police spooks driving their marked cars around the financial district...
or, just now, we were on our way home, driving up the FDR center lane, when we saw flashing police lights behind us. pulled onto the right side, and let one of those NYPD vans and an SUV pass us. pulled back into the centre lane behind them, 'cuz I didn't want to deal with traffic entering from the usual mess on 96th st.
car behind me immediately pitched a fit, started flashing his headlights lights and honking. i changed into the right lane again, realized the car behind was a limo... traveling as part of a convoy. these guys think they own the city, eh.
several of these cars (the limo, and at least one of the suv's that were surrounding it) had these interesting personalized plats that showed exactly what they think of themselves. NOT diplomatic plates
after the events of the last two weeks, i imagine the haves are a little worried about what us havenots are going to get up to. |
