12:00 am These are the most incredible lyrics I've ever heard, let alone read. I was floored the first time I heard them, and couldn't stop listening (and still haven't stopped listening since I've heard them).
Interpret as you wish...
Excerpt from: 10,000 Days (Wings, Part 2) by Tool
You're the only one who can hold your head up high shake your fist at the gates saying, "I have come home now! Fetch me the spirit the son and the father. Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended. It's time now My time now Give me my... Give me my wings!"
Give me my wings!
You are the light and way they will only read about.

06:23 pm - Insane rambling, inane banter and pointlessness I've decided to write a novel of sorts. And by write I mean "stop somewhere after the first chapter." Nevertheless, I've decided to post what I write as I write it to a new LJ. All posts are public, and make sure to view posts from "earliest post time" to "latest post time" instead of the other way.

09:03 pm - The Jewish Mint Conspiracy I've got a question that's been really bothering me for the past... few seconds. I mean, I wouldn't say that it's really been bothering me, so much as I'm kind of curious about it, and being naturally odd, I've formed my own theories as to the answer to my question. Anyway, enough dilly-dallying, let's get crackin' -
What's with kosher mints? Is it impossible to get a good, cheap, strong freakin' kosher mint? I mean, it boggles the mind: on one side you've got Tic Tacs, Ice Breakers (fuckin LOVE Ice Breakers. Only the blue ones, though. The green ones are kinda weak and taste like mylanta), Altoids (meh), those Certs mint things, etc. etc. And on the kosher side, we've got, like, Paskesz Super-Sketchy Weak-Ass Kosher Mints. What the fuck?
I think there's some conspiracy going on with the kosher mints, frankly. I'm convinced that the rabbinate - whoever they may be - are witholding our curiously strong mints for fear that we might be tempted to pop one in our mouth ("our mouth" or "our mouths"? The latter sounds odd - almost as if implying that I have more than one mouth, but I know that's not true; I had my superfluous second mouth surgically removed when I was 18 months old) on a fast day when, for some reason, brushing one's teeth is verbotten. Or maybe it's that if we were exposed to curiously strong mints that made our breath minty fresh, we, the curiously Modern Orthodox (MOREthodox, bitch), would become irresistable. And then the tables would turn from Shiksappeal to Judalicious!
I think it's the latter, really. I mean, everyone needs a little Jew in their life. Sometimes you even need two... just in case the first one turns into a balding, neurotic old man.
That's my theory, anyway. Current Mood: silly Current Music: Weezer - Perfect Situation

11:59 am - Poster! I searched and I searched and I searched online, and couldn't find anything CLOSE to resembling the Dream Theater poster I wanted. I didn't want to pay a ridiculous amount either, but I searched for a site that does custom-made posters and found zazzle.com
All I wanted was a very simple, large DT poster, and that's what I had made. I requested it not be made public, since that sorta thing would be a total violation of copyright or some suchliness... but check it out. I'm ever so proud:

Plain, simple. Exactly what I wanted. :)

02:15 am - Overwhelmed by this complex delirium... ...trapped inside this Octavarium!
I'm here to review Dream Theater's newest album mainly because it's my blog and I say that's what I want to do, so I'm going to do it.
Like all Dream Theater albums, you come into it expecting a lot of things, and then end up going, "Well... that was, um, interesting." I loved Train of Thought. A lot of people hated it. They called it arrogant, bombastic and full of unnecessarily long solos by John Petrucci. Fine, I could see where they're coming from; the solos were a bit overdone, but in their defense, John Petrucci is a golden god.
I was expecting some more serious "balls to the wall" metal. I was expecting hardcore riffing, shredding and some ridiculous drumming by Iron Mike Portnoy. And then I heard the album... and I thought I was listening to Falling Into Infinity. It was a different experience, and one that I didn't enjoy.
But I gave it a chance. I didn't like Train of Thought my first listen, either. Hell, when I heard Stream of Consciousness I thought it was overdone, over the top, and I just didn't "get" the shredding solo. But then I heard it over and over, heard Myung's bass weaving in and out of the solo and fell in love with the entire song, and the entire album.
Octavarium is no different. Well, actually, Octavarium is VERY different, but it's no different in the sense that I have grown to truly enjoy this album. It's nowhere near Train of Thought. It's not as dark. It's not as over the top. It's not as metal. And that's ok.
I know a lot of people were disappointed by the album, which is natural. Dream Theater fans - myself included - are notoriously intense, and expect and DEMAND greatness from Dream Theater. Dream Theater tends to deliver like clockwork, I feel, even if that clockwork sometimes need to be an acquired taste.
Octavarium reminds me a lot of Falling Into Infinity in the sense that the music is more melodic, more structured and more accessible. In that sense, it also reminds me of certain elements from SDoIT. It definitely borrows elements from Images and Words (think Metropolis). The truly amazing thing about this album is how unique every single song is, and yet how it somehow manages to fit together into one cohesive unit. Train of Thought sounds rehashed at certain points. You listen to As I Am, then you hear This Dying Soul, Endless Sacrifice, etc. etc. And it all sounds kind of similar. It almost is like listening to "This Endless Vacant Consciousness of The Name of thy Father As I Am." Octavarium isn't like that.
< To Be Continued > < EDIT: June something -- I'm too lazy to finish this. Octavarium is good. Buy it. >

01:30 pm - Always the summers are slipping away Train set and match spied under the blind Shiny and contoured the railway winds And I've heard the sound from my cousin's bed The hiss of the train at the railway head
Always the summers are slipping away
A 60 ton angel falls to the earth A pile of old metal, a radiant blur Scars in the country, the summer and her
Always the summers are slipping away Find me a way for making it stay
When I hear the engine pass I'm kissing you wide The hissing subsides I'm in luck
When the evening reaches here You're tying me up I'm dying of love It's OK
When I hear the engine pass I'm kissing you wide The hissing subsides I'm in luck

12:43 am Passed credit check; the Riverside apartment is pretty much not gonna happen (shocking, right? Too good to be true = not true). Gonna tell the Westmont yes, and I guess once I get my relocation lump sum, we'll sign the lease, coz then I'll have money for a security deposit and first month's rent.
15 days of "school" left (really only one day of classes, then reading week, the finals). Weezer concert on Wed. night.
Wow. It's almost ever. Rock and roll. Rock and roll...
EDIT: Got my 430W Thermaltake PSU today to replace my craptastic 480W ExtremoPower PSU (Yes, I promise, that's the brand name). Been holding up since 3PM so far, so I think we're stable. Woot. Current Mood: excited Current Music: Porcupine Tree - Halo
