A wonderful story of love...

I arrived at the address and honked the horn. After waiting a few minutes, I walked to the door and knocked. 'Just a minute,' answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor.

After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 90's stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940's movie.

By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets.

There were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware.

'Would you carry my bag out to the car?' she said. I took the suitcase to the cab then returned to help the lady.

She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb.

She kept thanking me for my kindness. 'It's nothing', I told her. 'I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother to be treated.'

'Oh, you're such a good boy, she said. When we got in the cab, she gave me an address and then asked, 'Could you drive through downtown?'

'It's not the shortest way,' I answered quickly.

'Oh, I don't mind,' she said. 'I'm in no hurry. I'm on my way to a hospice.'

I looked in the rear-view mirror. Her eyes were glistening. 'I don't have any family left,' she continued in a soft voice. 'The doctor says I don't have very long.' I quietly reached over and shut off the meter.

'What route would you like me to take?' I asked.

For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator.

We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds. She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.

Sometimes she'd ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.

As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, 'I'm tired. Let's go now.'

We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico.

Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were solicitous and intent, watching her every move. They must have been expecting her.

I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was already seated in a wheelchair.

'How much do I owe you?' She asked, reaching into her purse.

'Nothing,' I said

'You have to make a living,' she answered.

'There are other passengers,' I responded.

Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly.

'You gave an old woman a little moment of joy,' she said. 'Thank you.'

I squeezed her hand, and then walked into the dim morning light. Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life.

I didn't pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly lost in thought. For the rest of that day, I could hardly talk. What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift? What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away?

On a quick review, I don't think that I have done anything more important in my life.

We were invited to 3 hours of pure fun and delight to the Funderland Amusement park in Downtown Sacramento hosted by River Oaks Center for children. They offered games, face painting, art activities, sno-cones, dinner and 3 hours of free fun on all of the rides. We had a really great time as you can tell.

We went to the water park in Folsom. It has the coolest water feature. It's got a FLUME that our kiddos absolutely love and a little man made river that they love to lay down in. We had a great time at this park. The kiddos are so happy to be playing in water. Our children are pretty good about being easily entertained. It's fun to be the Mommy behind the camera and try to capture their lives. I'm so grateful for technology and what it offers.

We woke up and decided that we'd spend the day outside. Off we went to visit the Fish Hatchery. What a grand time we had. Everyone had such a wonderful time. We took a full ziplock bag of nickels and went to town feeding all of those fish. (Thanks Kuhkuh) Not only did we have a fun time, but we made a fun memory. The kiddos do love to go to the Fish Hatchery. That is a place that I loved going as a young child, it was fun to go with my own kiddos.

We gone WACKY TACKY!

The kiddos and I have put together a calendar of some little day trips that we can take in between my busy extern schedule. On this day we went to a place called Wacky Tacky. It's a place that parents can play with their children. It's the coolest place ever. Here are some pics of our fun day. We spent 4 hours there! Crazy and I got to be apart of it the WHOLE time! Check out this cool place here! A lot of places parents just sit on the side and watch their kiddos have fun. Not Wacky Tacky! This place is a new favorite for ALL of us.

Loose teeth...

Image
A couple weeks ago Seeley pulled out one of her loose teeth in the morning before school. While at school she pulled another tooth out. That night after dinner she pulled another tooth out! Yes, you counted right. That's 3 teeth in 1 day! Crazy wierd. I've never known for that to happen to anyone. Does this surprise me? Not really after all she was born with her two bottom teeth. Even the Dr. didn't believe me until he saw for himself. All I can say is "She's so smart."

It's been fun the last 9 months. I'm so glad that I decided to go back to school. I've had a wonderful experience. I'm now closing this chapter of my life. I now know the MEDICAL language, symptoms, treatments, and a lot of really fun stuff. Some of the things I've learned I will use for the rest of my life, some not so much but it was fun to learn. I'm now officially opening another chapter. I'm anxious of what is to come within the next 5 years. Today is a bittersweet moment for me. I was a bit melancholy walking out those school doors, but WOW what a huge relief. Today while taking my Senior exit exam I was pumped. We had to be in lab by 8:00am to take our test. I was done by 8:35am with 200 questions. I scored an 81%. On yesterdays final I scored 100%. Today while I was taking my class final I had a brain fart and forgot the terminology to 4 of my words. After sitting there for 10 minutes I decided it wasn't coming to my mind.....so I packed up my stuff and walked that hallway that I've walked every weekday for the last 9 months. Here I was all done, memories flooded my memory and I found myself filled with gratitude for my instructors Ms. Aimi and Ms. Weaver, my peers that allowed me to use them as patients, and to my wonderful family that has supported me through all of this. I am so blessed. So here I go to begin my adventure of externship, what's to come?

Workin' for a livin!

I can't believe that 9 months ago I made one of the best decisions of my life. I went back to school to work my way into my ONE-DAY career as a Nurse. Well, here I am the day before finals. Today was my last day in lab. Last day being in lecture with some of my favorite people and well not so favorite people.(Is it bad to that I'm excited to never see some of them again?) I love my instructors. They've been such wonderful examples of "Empathy." I count it a blessing to have been taught by wise women and women who want me to succeed. Nine months ago I was one big stress mess! Here I am as confident as ever and ready to work my groove into the Medical world. Look out Sacramento here I come!

Here we are. The Seniors of this course and our instructors. Rach, Myself, Ms. Aimi, Ms. Weaver, Sylvi, and Saber! Aren't we cool?

My brother designed this beautiful collage of my maternal Grandfather. What a blessing it is to have my Grandparents such a huge part of my life. Thanks Grandpa for all that you've done for me and my children and their children by serving our country. Because of people like you I get to enjoy the Freedoms of choice each and every day. I love you!
