[ Character's Name ] : Councillor Gorthan
[ Character's Age ] : Um... things start getting tricky here. Issue 16 suggests that Gorthan was already alive during the last glacial period, so he could very well be 20,000 years old. Even scrapping that, he is at the very least 300. He's pretty ancient, though he does not look it. He is still pretty old for an Evronian, as suggested by dialogue and a few extras. Let's say that if he were human, he would be about 70. Though, again... with his large shoulders and six-pack abs, he really, really, really doesn't look it.
[ Series ] : Superduck (a.k.a. PK, a.k.a. the reboot series for Disney's PKNA).
[ Canon Point ] : Right after his very last story in Issue 31.
[ History ] :
Gorthan's own life path has changed much in the society and history of Evron, the planet of conquerors. He was born a member of Evron's scientist caste, making his skin violet as opposed to the military caste's deep indigo or black. And although it was considered almost impossible for any Evronian to change the destiny assigned at birth in such a way, he pursued the military career instead of the scientific one, albeit he still chose to educate himself in the sciences at an academic level. In the rigid Evronian system, it was considered almost impossible for an individual born in any caste to either switch paths between military and scientific, or climb very far up the social ladder. Gorthan's intelligence, strategic ability and charisma allowed him to do both things, and in their most extreme form. He started out in the military middle caste as a simple commander and ended up as the de facto Emperor of Evron, in a social escalade that had very few precedents.
Of course, his means for accomplishing this were not always honorable, or even honest towards his fellow Evronians. In his days as a commander, he eliminated his colleague and rival Ekdon by blowing up the asteroid he was on during a mission and pretending that this maneuver was perfectly legitimate. And as regards a much more recent period in his life, when he was already one of the members of Evron's Imperial Council, there are rumors that the conspiracy resulting in the Emperor's disappearance and likely death was entirely orchestrated by Gorthan and his direct subordinate, General Zondag.
With the larger part of the Empire now under his rule, Gorthan realized that, through his own actions, he was fulfilling a prophecy made long before by the late Evronian poet Zartas, whereby one Evronian, the Warrior King, would rise to dominate every living being. Secretly believing himself to be the Warrior King, Gorthan sought ways to expand the Evronian Empire even further. The planets that still resisted Evron had set up an entire system to halt the empire's expansion, creating and training planetary superheroes known as the Galaxy Guardians, and thus Gorthan also had to find a way to eliminate them. He and Zondag began plans for invading a planet that seemed a plentiful resource of emotional energy - an Evronian's only nourishment - and did not seem to have its own Galaxy Guardian just yet. This planet was, needless to say, Earth.
It turns out that Earth did have its own Galaxy Guardian, albeit decidedly inexperienced - a duck ever so originally named Superduck, with a penchant for foiling the plots thought up by Gorthan or his generals.
Gorthan and Superduck had been enemies for some time, when, unexpectedly, Gorthan found himself needing assistance from him. The Evronian Councillor was lost in a deep slumber, telepathically linked to a device (called the Eracolator) that had belonged to Zartas and contained the poet's memories, which Gorthan was reliving as Zartas. Worried that Gorthan would never wake up from his sleep, and noticing that the Eracolator was gradually becoming loaded with energy that would soon make it explode and create a black hole, Gorthan's chief scientist, Zoster, summoned Superduck, asking the Guardian to connect his own mind to the Eracolator in turn and awake Gorthan from within his dream. Superduck successfully did so, and Gorthan recognized that he owed the Guardian his life, violently scolding Zoster when the scientist made an attempt to capture Superduck in spite of their temporary truce.
Said truce ended quickly, however. The struggles between Superduck and Gorthan's forces resumed soon after that, one of them leading to the (apparent) death of Zondag.
Finally, after much preparation, Gorthan and Zoster came up with the ultimate plot, one that would result in total and complete conquest of Earth and in the annihilation of the Galaxy Guardians. Everybody on Earth would have their emotions absorbed, including many of the Guardians, who had been lured there. Gorthan's plan worked to perfection, but, success after success, the Councillor found himself becoming increasingly worried as he pondered over Zartas' last poem about the Warrior King. It seemed incomplete, the last line simply trailing off. Was the Warrior King destined to fail...? Meanwhile, the capitals of of Earth fell, one after the other, under Evronian control, and things got to a point when all Gorthan had to do was simply activate one last machine, and the entire population of the globe would be turned into brainless, emotionless slaves for the Evronians. At that point, he decided to personally talk to Superduck, offering to spare him and recruit him as a general in the Evronian army.
While their encounter was brief, he saw how the Guardian was determined to honorably fight for his planet until the very end. His doubts now stronger than ever, Gorthan watched Earth from afar, a planet about to be annihilated, his gaze resting on the beautiful blue oceans, and the true meaning of Zartas' words dawned on him (power ultimately matters nothing, courage and love are everything, your generic An Aesop, basically) ... A moment later, he was roaring at Zoster not to press that last switch and instead order the Evronian troops to retreat.
After this, Superduck saved Gorthan's life one other time against Rhauros, an Evronian who had challenged Gorthan to a duel with the intent to take Gorthan's place at the head of the Evronian army. However, Rhauros fought unfairly, and Superduck stopped him and exposed his cheating just when Gorthan was about to be killed.
Gorthan will be pulled from his world shortly after this last incident.
[ Personality ] :
An intellectual of many, often unpredictable moods, Gorthan spends most of his day alone, sipping freshly refined emotional energy from an ornate goblet and meditating over the infinity of the universe and, most importantly, Zartas' words, certain that in them lies the key to Evron's destiny and to Gorthan's own. Unexpected company ruining his solitude is often greeted with hostile looks and scathing words; for when it comes to private life, Gorthan really isn't a social individual at all.
It is not easy to get along with the judgmental Gorthan. To him, things are either black or white, or, better, black with dishonor and sin or purple, the color symbolizing Evron's glory and pride. His moods are also as sudden and extreme as his judgement: as much as he advocates that a leader should be detached and emotionless, he is prone to nearly hysterical fits of rage and, more rarely, laughter. Most of the time, however, he will come off as cold and haughty. After all, as he has unofficially taken the Emperor's role, he is used to treating everybody as his subordinates.
Gorthan adores Zartas' works (to the point that he feels that interpreting them is his duty) and is absolutely certain that he is the Warrior King whose coming was prophesied by the Evronian poet. He tries to do everything he can to get into Zartas' mind and discover the true meaning of his simple, yet powerful words... including, one time, literally getting into Zartas' mind through the Eracolator. He sees Zartas' time as a more noble age, where men were more efficient and the values of honor and loyalty were respected by all. In general, he tends to have a very idealized view of the past and a pessimistic view of the present, which he believes he has the power to change for his people by restoring the ancient values.
He has very strong opinions on most things, and a tendency to pontificate at length about said opinions while making wide, dramatic gestures, belittling anything his interlocutor may think and often quoting Zartas' words on the subject. In general, the life he advocates is one following in Zartas' path: a simple life devoid of pleasures, devoted to military conquest and to upholding the ideal of honor.
... Sadly, his actions tend to contradict his words very often. For one, as Evron's de facto interim Emperor, he lives in utter luxury, owning spacious private quarters on each of his spaceships and what is probably the largest wardrobe on Evron (he wears a different, elaborate robe in almost every issue). He also lives surrounded by a collection of items and weapons that once belonged to Zartas and, of course, Zartas' books. And while Gorthan may be full of words on honor, honor really isn't his strong suit when one looks at Gorthan's resume: treachery and betrayal, even of his own people, are some of the tools he has used to obtain the power he now has. In a few words, he is the embodiment of the very disease he claims to want to heal.
Like Zartas, however, he is an Evronian of... not really many interests, but decidedly more interests than Evronians usually have: aside from politics and military tactics, Gorthan cultivates an interest in poetry and the study of Evronian literature. Another interest of his is biology, more specifically, genetic manipulation: he aims to find the next step of the evolution of the Evronian race. Though his knowledge of the discipline is quite deep, he usually trusts his scientists with the required experiments; he would still probably get pretty far on his own, having received extensive academic education in the field.
Speaking of genes, Gorthan has a bit of a sadistic streak, often reveling in his victims' terror and greatly enjoying the sight of things being destroyed and annihilated. While this tends to be something that all Evronians have in common, Gorthan takes it to a different level, feeling genuine, powerful excitement and aesthetic pleasure at the sight or news of massive destruction. However, this changed a bit after Superduck gave him a display of his undying loyalty to his planet. Gorthan was deeply moved, and realized that conquest and destruction cannot be all that he lives for. Since then, he has renounced the goal of complete annihilation of Earth in favor of a more "sustainable" use of its emotional resources, choosing to predate Earth's precious emotions through multiple, small-scale attacks. An idea that definitely did not sit well with Gorthan's power-hungry officials.
Gorthan's power over his people has garnered him countless enemies and left him without a single friend. It says a lot that, in canon, the closest thing to a friend he has is precisely his worst enemy, Superduck. He sleeps a light sleep, knowing that many of his officials conspire to take his power and likely his life, like Gorthan himself did with the Emperor. Trust is a big issue with him, in that he is probably more trusting than any military leader should be, and as such, he is rather easily manipulated (by the end of the series, it becomes clear that Gorthan was literally trusting all the wrong people: Zoster and Zondag, his closest subordinates, were both conspiring against him all along). He is also aware that his interactions with Superduck have made him weak in the eyes of his officials, which can only mean that the Warrior King's reign cannot last much longer.

[ Other Important Facts ] :
Evronian physiology
The Evronians are a vampire-like race that feeds on energy derived from emotions. Emotions are absorbed from victims through a beam-shooting gun called an Evrongun. After a refining process (that pretty much turns it into a drink), the energy collected can be absorbed as nourishment by the Evronian's body.
A victim struck by the beam from an Evrongun becomes something called a CoolFlame. They will have blue flames around their heads (they are not actual flames, however, nor are they harmful in any way) and, expression-wise, they won't be able to muster anything but a vacant stare. In the case of severe, complete coolflaming, they will not be able to talk, either. Coolflaming takes away willpower and a good deal of intelligence along with emotions, transforming the victim into the perfect slave for the Evronians. Coolflames are often used by the Evronians as manpower to perform very easy and menial tasks.
Because their reproduction happens through a system that is very reminiscent of mushrooms or plants, Evronians are all sexless (i.e. they remain perfectly PG-13 even when completely naked, i.e. they're a bit like Ken dolls, etc.), but with a decidedly male gender identity. There are no female Evronians, but a few Evronians have been reported to have fallen in love with females from other planets, something which Gorthan strongly condemns.

A deep, roaring voice echoed throughout the Plaza.
"ZOSTER! What is the meaning of this?!"
The newcomer - a tall, violet-skinned duck with a head of blond dreadlocks, clad in an elaborate turquoise robe embroidered in gold - held both of his hands at his sides, his long-nailed fingers - four on each hand - curling as if he was itching to use them to choke somebody. Fury quickened his breath and wrinkled his features into a terrifying mask. He may have been a duck, but those within his beak were definitely teeth, and oh, how he he was gritting them. His hair and one of his best robes... were completely soaked! That simply had to be Zoster's doing. That incompetent scientist never knew how to do anything right. Truly Zartas, the Beacon, was right, when he warned that a great leader should never trust the scientist class.
"What is this?! And... WHERE AM I?" he shouted one last time, before... well, before he started noticing the details about his new surroundings.
The architecture of the buildings, so similar to that of those cities he had conquered during those fateful few months not too long before. The physical traits of the passers-by, which he associated with an extremely rare (due to the planet's resistance), yet rather efficient kind of CoolFlame... And, lastly, when he finally looked up... that blue. That shade of deep blue that he could see overhead... he recognized it. It was... the very same thing that, in an instant, had convinced him to give up on the complete destruction of...
... Earth.
"I'm on Earth..." he muttered quietly to himself as he looked up, his lower beak dropping open and his blue, pupil-less eyes widening as they stared into similar blue.
