pls help

I am a PERL novice trying to write a script to search a MySQL database and display results. This seems like one of the most basic functions possible but I'm still struggling. Does anyone have or know of any examples of this type of code that I could look to to understand the basic format?

Also: php examples would work too; I have a friend who could walk me through them.
