netscape compatible span based menu

hi, me again.

i would like to have a span that can expand and collapse at the click of an image using javascript and compatible with all browsers or at least ns and ie and i cant find this online. can anyone help? the content of the span is going to be in asp and read from a database so cant be saved in javascript code unfortunately.

im realising more and more floors in my knowlege of web programming...
