What's this about?

The purpose of this community is to help members meet their writing aspirations by encouraging them to set weekly goals and providing a place where members can get encouragement, praise and commiseration as they work.

So how does it work?

There will be two main posts every week. The first will be the "Set Goals" post, where members will comment and outline their personal goals for the week ("this week, I'm going to write an average of 500 words a day," "I'm going to revise the short story I finished last month," "I'm going to finish that goddamn novel," etc.).

The second weekly post will be the "Check-in" post, where members can comment to say how they did. The purpose isn't to embarrass people, but rather to allow everyone to evaluate their own progress over the week, so that they can meet their overarching aspirations as writers.

Members are totally welcome to make other posts at any time, however. Did you just sell a story and want someone to jump up and down and make happy squeeing noises with you? Post about it! Need some help? Ask away. Want to share a paragraph you just wrote that is super awesome? Go for it. Feeling the urge to complain about how hard it is to craft sentences that don't suck sometimes? We've all been there.

What happens if I don't meet my goals?

Nothing. Well, aside from not meeting a goal, which is kind've not-awesome. But everyone has off days now and then, and you can try again next week!

What happens if I do meet my goals?

AWESOMENESS.

Is this just for short stories and novels?

Nope. Blogging, essay writing, dissertations, fanfic, editing… I'd open it up to anything that you can set weekly goals for, honestly, but keeping it at "writing" gives us all a reasonably common frame of reference.

Are there any rules?

Yes. Rule one is don't share other people's stuff without permission. Some of us are trying to sell some of our work, and that can't happen if it gets spread around too much.

Rule two is don't be a jerk. You all know how to treat other people with respect, right? Right.

How do I join?

Membership to this community is moderated. I want to keep it small so that members will have an actual sense of community, and also so that people can feel comfortable trusting a small group of people as they share about their goals and possibly some of their work. If you're someone I know or recognize from interactions with you online, I'll probably approve you right away. If you got pointed here by a friend, just leave me a comment on this post letting me know a little bit about you and I'll almost certainly approve you.

I have questions!

It's possible that I have answers! Leave a comment and I'll see what I can do.
