Now you'll never be without Weer'd
Check this out
http://syndicated.livejournal.com/weerdsworld/

Add this to your F-list and Weer'd World will show up on your F-list just like it always has, only now it might look a bit better, and it'll come with a link to the post where you can comment. Also I'm using wordpress so you won't need any sort of account to comment, just fill out a screen name, and make up a bogus email if you want and you're in!

Thanks so much to Fearsclave for helping get that thing running!

I'll still be reading my F-list because you LJ people STILL rock, but I'm pretty much done posting here. For the real action go to

Awareness
Two great posts on criminal victim selection and situational awareness:
http://xavierthoughts.blogspot.com/2010/05/from-archives-recognizing-threats.html
http://3bxsofbs.infamousanime.net/?p=2004

Xavier shows some of the actions done by criminals to target prey, and how we can pick up on them. Bob talks about an innocent encounter at the store where trouble might have happened, but it didn't.

Now I'll break away and get into some technical babble before doubling back. Col. Jeff Cooper came up with a neat situational awareness code he called "The color code".
http://www.frfrogspad.com/color.htm

White - Relaxed, unaware, and unprepared. If attacked in this state the only thing that may save you is the inadequacy and ineptitude of your attacker. When confronted by something nasty your reaction will probably be, "Oh my God! This can't be happening to me."

Yellow - Relaxed alertness. No specific threat situation. Your mindset is that "today could be the day I may have to defend myself." There is no specific threat but you are aware that the world is an unfriendly place and that you are prepared to do something if necessary. You use your eyes and ears, and your carriage says "I am alert." You don't have to be armed in this state but if you are armed you must be in yellow. When confronted by something nasty your reaction will probably be, "I thought this might happen some day." You can live in this state indefinitely.

Orange - Specific alert. Something not quite right has gotten your attention and you shift your primary focus to that thing. Something is "wrong" with a person or object. Something may happen. Your mindset is that "I may have to shoot that person." Your pistol is usually holstered in this state. You can maintain this state for several hours with ease, or a day or so with effort.

Red - Fight trigger. This is your mental trigger. "If that person does "x" I will shoot them." Your pistol may, but not necessarily, be in your hand.

What's neat to notice about this code that even at its extreme terminus of Red, it does NOT mean your gun is blazing or you are otherwise acting violently. Its simply saying that enough things have gone wrong in your situational view that action WILL be taken if the threat persists. Col. Cooper was not a man interested in fighting if he could be doing other things, the fact that Col. Cooper died in his bed at the age of 86 is a testament to this. If given a choice I'll die in my bed at a ripe old age rather than on the ground still in my prime, and anybody with half a brain would make the same choice.

In Bob's story he snapped from condition yellow into Orange when he saw some people acting suspiciously. In the end if the people were a threat it turned out to be not of Bob's concern, so again he returned to yellow. Condition white is the condition you should only be in when you are otherwise secured. You are in condition white when you are asleep, or when you're in your home with the doors locked, ect.

Condition yellow is the simple act of admitting that the world is a dangerous place, and you can only depend on yourself for your safety. Chances are the world is pretty safe if you're smart about things, but its always worthwhile to keep your head up and your wits about you.

In Bob's story its most likely the two people he was concerned about didn't even know they were being watched. Same goes for the youths TXGunGeek talked about in his comment. Only the men spotted by the Geek's wife ended up robbing the place. Better safe than sorry.

An interesting side effect of this was when I was in Charlotte over the weekend, and disarmed of both my gun and my defensive knife by the stupid laws they have there, when I found myself in condition Orange, what is otherwise unremarkable suddenly becomes uncomfortable.

My standard thought process is: "That person looks like they're up to no good. If I can confirm that I may have to take action."
Suddenly to "That person looks like they're up to no good. If I can confirm that I don't know what I'm going to do."

Thankfully nobody was up to any bad things I could see, so all was safe, it just sucks having to defer to others for your defense. If cornered I'll use my hands and feet if I have to, but I'm not such a fool to think I'm superman.

On last thing I always say is make eye contact with everybody you come across when traveling. Let's face it, if the thugs causing problems were expert actors, they'd be acting rather than committing crimes. Look them in the eyes, this MIGHT reveal their plans and give you an advantage. It also might cause them to loose their nerve and bother somebody else. You'll never know, nor will you likely care so long as you make it home to your bed that night.

In the end its a small price to pay to avoid a potentially massive cost of being caught unaware.

As the World's most Dangerous Librarian says: "Carry your gun, its a lighter burden than regret."

Interesting Story
Bob S. sent me this gem:
http://www.fox2now.com/news/ktvi-man-bitten-cencus-051810,0,5196797.story

"ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI-FOX2Now.com) - A Census worker's dog took a bite out of a South St. Louis man. Dan Vacca says a census worker approached him outside his South St. Louis condo on Tuesday. He thought it was odd that the worker had his dog with him. While he was answering questions, Vacca says the dog jumped up and bit him in the stomach. He is not pleased to say the least and wonders why the worker was allowed to leave with the dog.

Animal control officer says it will monitor the dog for rabies. The case will be reviewed to see if the dog can remain with it's owner."

At first I thought it was like one of the stories Linoge covered:
http://www.wallsofthecity.net/2010/05/your-home-is-your-fortress.html

That tie in with my personal story
http://weerdbeard.livejournal.com/700227.html

But this seems closer to my stories of urban animal attacks.

Strange world we live in.

Be safe in it!

Gunnie Interview
While Jay and I were wandering the floor of the NRA convention we stopped by the Charter Arms booth. The young woman there was super excited to see two gents from Massachusetts, and let us know that they were working hard at getting guns on the mass approved firearms roster, and that the .44 Bulldog was already available for sale.

Jay started asking some questions, and she called her Dad over. "Dad" happened to be Nick Ecker, the President of Charter Arms. He was more than happy to walk Jay and I through all the bullshit he waded through to get his guns sold in Mass. Jay has a good write up here:
http://stuckinmassachusetts.blogspot.com/2010/05/cost-of-doing-gun-business.html

We need more gun makers like Charter Arms. Also I was actually impressed by the look and feel of their guns. They're not as nice as S&W who they would be directly competing with, but for how much cheaper they are, they're worth a look if you're on a budget!

Yayyy!
http://snarkybytes.com/ViciousCircle/?p=268

Vicious Circle LIVE! We recorded it in two segments, one at JayG's Hotel room, and one in a Wachovia Bank lobby area that had nice tables and they didn't seem to mind us there.

I generally don't listen to VCs that I'm in because I heard all the jokes once, and its not like we're painting the Sistine Chapel here. I will be listening to this one just because It was need to do a VC live around a table rather than from Skype from our various corners of the world.

Also I'd like to congratulate MikeW, Newbius, and Wai on their first VC and excellent contributions!

Arrrrr

**Update** just did my usual VC scan while doing some work at my desk. Its a bit on the quiet side, and some people are harder to hear (Note the loud-ass Mainer is NOT one of them...Alan is surprisingly hard to hear, given that the mic was right in front of him) So make sure you can listen to it someplace where the volume can be cranked a bit.

That being said the sound quality of the MP3 is about on Par with an episode of Gun Nuts Radio, so good work Alan, given that your "Studio" was a hotel room, and a lobby with a bunch of gun dorks sitting around a table with his weird alien mic!

Tuesday DGU

I don't know why ANY pizza delivery driver wouldn't carry a gun. Also I'm disgusted how several major pizza chains have polices that require their drivers to be defenseless as they bring pizza and cash to strange locations.

I'll also point out that it looks like his carry gun is a Kel-Tec PF9, which is considered a "Junk Gun" or a "Saturday Night Special" under many restrictive state laws. I suspect an adult working for a pizza shop may not be able to afford some of the high-dollar carry guns I handled at the NRA show.

Again, restrictive laws and polices get good people killed.

Be Safe, People!

For Breda
I have a crude sense of humor, so very often I make dick jokes. There are several euphemisms that I use, but many are amused by the more rare "Hogan" and "Hog". Breda had never heard such foolishness, so she had me pose for this shot.

There you have all seen my Hog now!

Light Posting Ahead
http://stuckinmassachusetts.blogspot.com/2010/05/on-road.html

As Jay hinted here, I'm in the process of getting myself a big-boy blog. I've decided I'm going to keep blogging light here until I've made my final decisions so as not to have to waste all the NRA photos and stories on a blog that will simply be abandoned.

For those who still read me on their LJ F-list I'll work on getting an LJ RSS Feed so nobody actually looses out.

I learned from the NRA convention that I have vastly outgrown this Livejournal and its time to upgrade.

While you wait, I found Chris has some GREAT pictures from the Charlotte Blog Bash hosted by the amazing Breda.
http://guywithguns.blogspot.com/2010/05/nra-2010-convention-blogger-meetup-part.html

It shows what a who's-who event for the 2nd Amendment it was. I especially love the ones of MikeW. and I speaking with Alan Gura, meanwhile Michael Bane was standing right behind us speaking with other mere bloggers. It was really sensory overload.

Thanks for all who are standing by!

Day Three
Yesterday was even cooler than Friday.

Jay and I got a chance to meet and talk with the owner of Charter arms, Jay conducted an impromptu interview about approving handguns for Massachusetts sale. As I said before, I talked at length with Alan Gura, and two big issues we talked about were the Assault Weapons ban, and the handgun roster.

I'll save the details for a dedicated post, but I'll say that I have even more confidence that Massachusetts is not lost, but again, a front line of a revolution.

If you hope around my Blog buddy's pages there are some good photos of the Protest Easy Guns protest. I got some great snaps of what was about a dozen protestors, about as many media people, and about 100 NRA members looking on in amusement.

We did a live Viscious Circle in Jay's room, which added a neat feel to what is normally done on Skype from across the country. We broke early to go to the above get-together, but we'll finish it in the Media room at the convention today .

Aslo I've been told that bloggers will get a private showing with the Movie guns exibit when the convention closes.

Then it's the long ride back home, and back to work.

Yikes!

So much fun!

Day 2
Didn't get a chance to post an update from the convention yesterday because it was such a whirlwind of a day. I still haven't seen all the exibits yet, nor have I asked all the questions I need to.

Met a ton of famous-on-the internet people like my room-mate (who's still sleeping, MikeW) Alan from Snarky Bytes, The Amazing Breda, Say Uncle, Joe Huffman, Sebastian, Countertop, Legally Armed in Detroit (who I don't think I've ever linked here, but should because he's quite a character!)

I'm taking a lot of pictures that will be uploaded when I get home, and should fuel blog posts for a good while.

We all had several gatherings after the convention shut down, including a great southern place where I dined on a whiting po boy and collard greens. Seriously, Rebels make AMAZING food.

Had a lot of interesting conversations, but one good one was imagining the various anti-gun bloggers hanging out in a convention or get-together. Also how there can be 70,000 people all in one place supporting one cause.

So much more to blog about, but I'll leave it at that for now.

Daybreak
Sun's up, we have about an hour to go before we hit the hotel.

We're both got some, but not a lot of sleep. I had a breakfast of spicy pork rinds and tea.

Jay on the other hand is a sinister robot who survives entirely off caffeen and open roads.

He's also a fussy baby about where he gets his coffee from.

I feel dirty.

At least I'm not looking for a Scolloper to ride, like back in the old days.
10:52 pm
Road LOL
So we're driving through White Plains and this transpires:

Jay: "Woah, you see that?"
Weer'd: "Yeah that was a deer strike."

Jay: "It was BIG!"
Weer'd "Ayuh, big but, I think it was just a deer."

Jay: "That's good meat!" *SLAMS ON BRAKES*

He was just kidding, but my eyes bugged out of my head.

Still would have kicked all sorts of ass to show up at the convention with a big friggin' Bambi strapped to the hood of our rental car!

Night Passage
We were somewhere outside of Barstowe, near the edge of the Desert...

So Jay and I just crossed into Connecticut on our way to the NRA convention in North Carolina.

Making good time so far and having a good time, tho hopefully our antics won't come even close to Dr. Thompson and Mr. Acosta.

Can't wait to arrive and see everything and everybody!
