Personality;
A highly educated woman with a calming aura, Inara Serra is a gentle yet strong spirit.
As a Companion, Inara has to be of a nurturing body and mind. Those that are welcomed into her chamber are treated with the highest regard, Inara tending to their every need and wish with a gentle and calm demeanor. Everyone is in need of a connection, both in body and spirit, and that is the duty of a Companion. Her clients are not chosen on a whim; Inara is very specific on who she chooses to bed, believing the need for compatibility is the most important thing. Inara is a professional first and foremost: she holds Guild laws to a high degree and takes immediate offense to any disrespect shown to her or her trade.
Hence her usual attitude to the Serenity crew, Mal in general. If there was one person in the 'verse who can get under her skin, that would be the good captain. Mal can usually bring out the Inara's bolder and sharper side, usually butting heads with him from her work to his own stupid and reckless behavior. However, the two still hold a certain amount of respect for the other and work well together. There is some unresolved sexual tension between the pair, and both are far too stubborn to acknowledge it. As for the rest of the crew, Inara is very much the mother hen of their clunky little family, always lending an ear to their problems. Inara's very mothering to the younger members, often looking after them when not on a job of her own. She's willing to use her connections to help out her crew should the need arise. She joins the others for dinners and laughs, only keeping them at an arm’s length when it comes to discussing business. After all, Companions don’t kiss and tell. Well educated and well versed, Inara is at most times the voice of reason, usually scolding the crew on their illegal activities. Though she has taken some delight in helping on their jobs.
Though shown in subtle glances and dialogue, Inara has a fear of death. It’s never explicitly stated, but Inara’s been diagnosed with a terminal illness. Learning the truth of her mortality is what likely led her to join the Serenity instead of staying in the Core Worlds, simply telling Mal that she wanted to see the Universe.With Serenity, Inara is granted some of the freedom that Mal fights for every day of his life.
