Nice, balmy winter and so much for ice fishing

When living on Plattsburgh Air Force Base across Lake Champlain from where I now live, the big lake always froze over as winter got going. I recall watching deer on the ice near Crab Island from a window of our home in base housing overlooking the lake. That was in the late 80s. Now, Lake Champlain is wide open. That’s it for ice fishing. And it is hard not to think of climate change when thinking of the big lake. Today’s NY Times has this feature about ice fishing and the lack thereof in Minnesota.

Brown bruins could replace polar bears, scientists say

The reason, of course, is the changing climate — the warmer-climate bruin moves its range north to take advantage of new food, shelter and other life requirements created by man-caused changes in the Earth’s climate, while the polar bear’s chief life requirement — ice — is lost. ‘Drill baby, drill’ coming to Discovery Channel

It’s one thing for FOX News to give Sarah Palin a stage from which to voice her pro-oil drilling PR blather. It’s quite another for Discovery, which used to be well-liked among conservationists and nature lay people for its nature-oriented show, to give the ex-governor of Alaska a  platform and have the chutzpah to label it a “nature” show.
