Idaho hunters kill 96 wolves

At last count, that is. And Idaho Fish and Game officials in Boise get to tally up the hunting and trapping license revenue, cause that’s how the agency’s budget gets its m0ney (mostly). Meantime, the increasingly muddied ecosystems which gray wolves patrol (regardless of political boundary lines) struggle on. The human propensity for killing carnivores is alive and well. The first near-extinction of Canis lupus didn’t teach enough. Sadly, I know for certain that are conservationists in the Adirondacks who continue to advocate for the return of big predators to that still-mostly-wild region. This link offers a snapshot of the wolf-killing ongoing in Idaho.

Wolf kills: Will there have to be more?

That’s a lousy headline for a big-city rag. In any case, the answer is no: Gt the livestock – cows and sheep – out of wolf habitat. And that habitat was occupied by wolves and a whole lot else of native wildlife long before the locusts known as sheep and cattle showed up.

Wolves in Washington State targeted over livestock losses

Well, hell, why not just take out all the wolves? That is, after all, the apparent goal of livestock growers, who, let’s be clear, graze their woolies and cows on public land. Here’s the latest on Washington’s “wildlife” plans.

USDA’s ‘Wildlife Services’ is the wildlife killing agency

And the killing is not pretty. Even Bald and Golden eagles have been killed by Wildlife Services field workers, as this in-depth newspaper article explains in excruciating detail. Wildlife Services isn’t just about protecting the livestock of “ranchers” who’ve leased federal public land (ours!). Nosiree. It’s about killing any and all native predators. And that’s how it has been for a bunch of decades. Time to stop the killing. The human usurpation of habitat for buildings, roads and parking lots is bad enough.

How to make enemies and loose friends without really trying

How? By doing something stupid like the wolf-trapper highlighted in this piece I clipped from the Idaho Statesman did. What a travesty. And Idaho F & G ought to be given a reprimand for allowing one of its license holders to do this kind of crap.

When snow fleas appear, Isle Royale winter wolf study shuts down

I’m following these articles pretty closely as the Nevada Barr mystery novel I just read takes place on Isle Royale and its characters are participants in the winger wolf study there. Neat stuff. Yes, wolves still roam wild, not as closely supervised (not just watched for the hell of it) critters, as they are today in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Oregon and Washington State.

A final refuge for gray wolves

Americans, especially those who call themselves Westerners and reside in Wyoming and states near the Cowboy State just can’t seem to find room in their hearts, or in their political kingdom, for all of America’s native wildlife, most particularly the Gray Wolf. The craze among these rifle-toting folks is shoot first and to heck with ecology and the predator’s role in a healthy ecosystem. Read about the final refuge here.

Scientist at work: Following a wolf pack

It just so happens that I’m reading novelist Nevada Barr’s “Winter Study” at the moment. The mystery is about the long-running winter study of wolves on Isle Royale National Park, Michigan. And here’s a feature article from today’s NY Times about a similar theme. Also coincidentally, I was the public affairs officer for the 8th Fighter Wing at Kunsan Air Base, South Korea, from June 85 to June 86. The wing’s nickname is “Wolf Pack.”

Offer to Oregon from the only stupid Otter in the West

The Idaho governor, Butch Otter, is doing his best to uphold a long and inglorious tradition of antics and dumb stunts. Here’s the latest proof. (I can say this as I am an Idahoan transplanted by a career in the U.S. Air Force).

Wolves to be posioned for tar sands development in Canada

Through together the Keystone XL pipeline and the outright destruction of boreal forest in the Canadian province of Alberta, and what’s the result . . . Disaster with a capital D. Read how the extermination of wolves fits into the whole sordid mess.
