THE LESSON

John 3:22-36 John testifies again about Jesus

After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he spent some time there with them and baptized. John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim because water was abundant there; and people kept coming and were being baptized—John, of course, had not yet been thrown into prison.

Now a discussion about purification arose between John’s disciples and a Jew. They came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, the one who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you testified, here he is baptizing, and all are going to him.”

John answered, “No one can receive anything except what has been given from heaven. You yourselves are my witnesses that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah, but I have been sent ahead of him.’ He who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. For this reason my joy has been fulfilled. He must increase, but I must decrease.”

The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks about earthly things. The one who comes from heaven is above all. He testifies to what he has seen and heard, yet no one accepts his testimony. Whoever has accepted his testimony has certified this, that God is true. He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. The Father loves the Son and has placed all things in his hands. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but must endure God’s wrath.

The Rev. Sandy Siegel Miller, deacon at the Church of the Holy Nativity in Clarendon Hills, Illinois, and her husband, Jonathan Miller, founded Sounds Good! Choir for Chicago-area adults 55 and older 10 years ago. Now the program has nine choral ensembles throughout Chicago and its suburbs, including one choir for singers with early-stage memory loss and their caregivers. “The Episcopal Church has a very clear message that you are welcome, whoever you are, and that message applies to Sounds Good! Choir,” Sandy Miller said. “Our doors are wide open to any older adult who thinks they can benefit from this program.” The program offers two types of choral ensembles – “Sounds Good” for elderly people with normal cognitive functions, and “Good Memories” for people with dementia and their caregivers. Each ensemble averages 45-60 singers, though two ensembles have closer to 100 members. Noah’s Curse of Ham, 19th c., Ivan Stepanovitch Ksenofontov. The passage suggests a sexual crime, but thousands of years later European and American businessmen latched onto it to justify slavery, instead of exposing their own violence and greed.

THE LESSONS
Genesis 9:18-29 (NRSV)

The sons of Noah who went out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Ham was the father of Canaan. These three were the sons of Noah; and from these the whole earth was peopled.

Noah, a man of the soil, was the first to plant a vineyard. He drank some of the wine and became drunk, and he lay uncovered in his tent. And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside. Then Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father; their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father’s nakedness. When Noah awoke from his wine and knew what his youngest son had done to him, he said,

“Cursed be Canaan;
lowest of slaves shall he be to his brothers.”

He also said,
“Blessed by the LORD my God be Shem;
and let Canaan be his slave.
May God make space for Japheth,
and let him live in the tents of Shem;

After the flood Noah lived three hundred fifty years. All the days of Noah were nine hundred fifty years; and he died.

Therefore let us go on toward perfection, leaving behind the basic teaching about Christ, and not laying again the foundation: repentance from dead works and faith toward God, instruction about baptisms, laying on of hands, resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. And we will do this, if God permits. For it is impossible to restore again to repentance those who have once been enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, since on their own they are crucifying again the Son of God and are holding him up to contempt. Ground that drinks up the rain falling on it repeatedly, and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. But if it produces thorns and thistles, it is worthless and on the verge of being cursed; its end is to be burned over.

Even though we speak in this way, beloved, we are confident of better things in your case, things that belong to salvation. For God is not unjust; he will not overlook your work and the love that you showed for his sake in serving the saints, as you still do. And we want each one of you to show the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope to the very end, so that you may not become sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

Morning Prayer:

I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.

Sunday morning January 11th, as synagogues around the world were preparing to read one of the most enigmatic scenes in the Torah, a bush aflame yet unconsumed, a synagogue in Jackson, Mississippi, was set on fire. The library and administrative offices of Beth Israel were reduced to charred ruins. Two Torah scrolls were destroyed. Five were damaged. One Torah, rescued from Europe after the Holocaust, remained intact as it was encased in glass. On the very morning Jews everywhere were turning toward a story about fire as revelation, fire was being used as a weapon of erasure. A suspect is in custody and Beth Israel has suspended services indefinitely. Letter-Writing Program Aims to Honor Post-9/11. “A Million Thanks”, a nonprofit organization, aims to address that issue through a letter-writing campaign, according to a press release. While “A Million Thanks” has spearheaded letter programs for veterans before, this is the first time the nonprofit is fueling a campaign designed for veterans of wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Then Peter began to speak to them: “I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. Look with mercy, O heavenly Father, upon the people in this land who live with injustice, terror, disease, and death as constant companions. Have mercy upon us. Help us to eliminate our cruelty to these our neighbors. Strengthen those who spend their lives establishing equal protection of the law and equal opportunities for all.
