*grin*

Finally managed to post this tonight, as tonight is the last performance of the 13/14 cast. I like this cast. Sure they have their issues, but as a fan, I highly approve of all the twitter interaction and YT videos! I saw the show twice, on May 21st and 22nd. Most of the main cast was on.

As a costume geek:
** After a visit to Shepherd´s Bush and Goldhawk Road I think it´s kinda overrated. Not that many useful things, and not that cheap. And somewhat rude shopkeepers. In the end I still left with a couple of fabrics; a green wool mix for a 1830s waistcoat, purple silk for a bolero and shiny polyester brocade for things still unknown…
** Berwick Street may be quite expensive, but I got a nice green wool here. And good service.
** If you want really amazing vintage buttons for that project, or just want to drool, head for Taylor´s buttons on Cleveland Street. The owner was a really cool cat, and I could have stayed there for hours.
As a Les Mis fan:
** I really like the 13/14 cast! Yes, Carrie Hope Fletcher´s dying Eponine wasn´t very realistic and yes, Anton Zetterholm felt more suicidal than determined during Final Battle, but heck I liked them anyway! And the rest of the cast. Even though James Gant´s Javert went completely drama queen after the barricades…
** As a person with short legs, A0 in the dress circle wasn´t that bad.
** Last time I was seated next to an elderly man, a hardcore fan who had seen the show almost 100 times. We chatted through the interval and he was really nice. This time, I ended up next to him again! And he remembered me! And “scolded” me for nicking the A36 seat. Yes I went there twice… *huge grin*
** In June, I caught both encore screenings of NTlive´s Frankenstein. To keep it short: Jonny Lee Miller was a loud-mouthed and angry Frankenstein, Benedict Cumberbatch was a giddy ditto. Both ruled as the Creature, in their own creepy ways. As a whole, I prefer the Miller!Creature version, because Cumberbatch has a much better stage voice. In fact, I think I heard less than half of Miller´s lines!
** In July I went on holiday to York and Oxford. One of the last days, I went to *cough*London*cough* and bought a day ticket to the Sweeney Todd production at Adelphi. The cast led by Imelda Staunton and Michael Ball were made of pure win, but seriously, Adelphi theatre, send your rude ushers to charm school, will you?! I was turning my phone OFF, you inbred sow!
** In August I went back to London, just for a weekend, to catch Peter Jöback as the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera. Half of my colleagues probably thought I´d completely lost my marbles, spending so much money on such a short time. But yes, it was so worth the money! I´m still on the fence about Jöback´s Phantom, but Killian Donnelly was cute as a button as Raoul, if you can call a grown man ”cute”. Oh well, he´ll never read this!
** In November, I spent my 35th birthday in London. After saving up for two years, I finally bought my Mulberry East West Bayswater bag. I felt like a fish out of water, going into their super posh store at Westfield. And – of course – I got a ticket to go see Les Mis. In seat A36 in the dress circle. Yup, a really good birthday!
** Two days later, I queued for two hours for a day ticket to War Horse. It was freezing cold and an Aussie thought I was flirting with him (I wasn´t, I just hadn´t had coffee yet…). In the end it was so worth it, cause War Horse must be one of the most awesome shows ever. The horses are super cool, but I think the angry goose was my favourite! My seat was in front row, almost centre front. In one scene, the actors was sitting on the stage edge, less than a metre away. Unfortunately one of them was holding a rifle, and when he was getting up, he slipped and for a moment the butt of the rifle was waaay too close for comfort! But, as a certain theatre blogger always says: ”hey, nobody died!”
EDIT: If you have £1200 to spare, you can buy a replica of the goose in the theatre shop… I want it! I want it so badly! No, I have no idea where I´d store it, or display it, but still… gimme!!! *grabby hands*
Still high on my Les Mis experience in London, I was thrilled to find out a Swedish production would open in Malmö in september 2011. I desperately wanted to go, and when I saw that Fred Johanson would play Javert, it wasn´t too hard to talk kseenaa into coming too… Judged from pics, it was clearly a non-replica production, and it looked good, if somewhat confusing. A bald Javert? Valjean with glasses? And of all the mothly students in tricolour trousers; which one was Enjolras again?
We wanted good tickets, so in the end we had to wait until January 2012 until we got to see it. And it sure was an interesting experience. Yeah, I think interesting is the word here…

Did I mention the show has been reworked since last year? It has. A lot. Some things for the better, some for the worse. Sadly, the main problem, the completely unbelievable plot, hasn´t and will never be fixed. Anyway…

I reread my review of LND from last year. Since then I´ve became a lot more critical about the show. I still like it, in the ”three hours of brainless entertainment” sense: cause some of the music is really good, but if you´re looking for quality musicals you should head for Queen´s (Les Mis) or Her Majesty´s (original Phantom of the Opera). In fact: head for anything but this crap. Because let´s face it: even with lots of reworking and changes, LND is crap. The plot doesn´t make sense at all and some or the lyrics are downright laughable. The cast struggle with what they´re given, but not the best singing in the world can save this… trainwreck.

I can´t believe it took me until 2011 to drag my lazy arse to Queen´s Theatre and a live performance of Les Miserables. This was the first time I saw it live, but certainly not the last! *proud fangirl smile*

I´ve been going through my old LJ posts and transferring those worth keeping. Not sure if this one is really worth keeping, but what the hell why not?! If you have a blog about musicals, you better show everything, even the skeletons from review equivalence of Narnia, right?
In my defense, I must say this fascination didn´t last long. Very soon, I was thinking ”what the hell did I watch?” and ”who came up with this ridiculous story?!” Did I travel all the way from Sweden and endured a fucking Icelandic volcano eruption, which canceled ALL FLIGHTS IN ALL BLOODY EUROPE and it took me almost a week to get home, to watch this crap?! Oh well, I guess we all make mistakes…
