In the process of downloading the newest version of Knoppix so that I can make Live CDs for the C&W workshop. Gonna print labels (ok, I only have 20 and I'm too cheap to buy more) and make printed envelopes for them. Then I'll have to get around to burning copies. I think that I am also going to try out Mandrake 9.1 on my laptop that is currently running RH 8.0. Why? Because I can!

Sitting @ Barnes & Nobles, reading network theory, drinking a skim iced latte, and blogging. Totally connected, yet totally disconnected? What does it mean that I am surrounded by people who are doing the same thing as me (and who may have the same interests, yet none of us have spoken 2 words to each other. Is technology (or networking) actually serving to remove links from our social network?

Just weird thoughts going through my head. Probably from to much caffiene and theory and not enough sleep, as usual.

Jazz great Nina Simone died in her Paris home on Monday. Simone's music has long been an inspiration to me. Her raspy, beautiful voice has calmed me at times when nothing else could.

Subject:The government's reading list
Security:Public

The President's Council on Bioethics has issued a reading list that "can be invaluable companions as we grapple to understand our brave new biotechnology". From the site:

Bioethics generally touches matters close to the core of our humanity: birth and death, body and mind, sickness and health, freedom and dignity are but a few. From the beginning, human beings have addressed these matters in works of history, philosophy, literature and religious meditation...In "From Our Bookshelf," we offer a selection of these works for interested readers. Each of the readings that follow - which include poetry, short stories and more - is accompanied by a brief introduction and questions about the bioethical implications of the work. The questions are suitable for discussion by groups reading together, or for study by individuals reading alone.

There was a conference on Teaching and Learning With Technology on campus this week and at the keynote address one of the technology bigwigs announced that we were going to be piloting wireless mobile classrooms for all students.

The scary thing is that they don't just want laptop initiatives anymore, but now they want tablet PCs! Every critical bone in my body ached. In cases like this I wonder who is going to get hurt by this. I wonder about the poor and/or minority population (that the president wants to increase). I wonder how the heck are they supposed to pay for such things. If students are forced to come to school with the machines (paying for them themselves) how many "Other" students will we lose? If we build it into tuition how is this going to affect the number of students that can actually come here? How will aid packages be affected? What is the learning curve compared to regular computers or laptops? What about handicapped students? Will they be able to handle the smaller machines and smaller keyboards? What about students who have already bought desktop and/or laptop machines for school and can't possibly afford another one. What about maintenance, security, and breakage? So many questions and no answers?

To make a long story short (ok shorter) I volunteered to work with the planning team on considering some of these issues and working towards workable solutions. How crazy am I? It's not like I don't already have 50 tons of work to do!

I am experiencing real FTP weirdness at home. I have sites hosted on 2 university servers and the server that is housed in my office at work. First, I was unable to FTP to one of the servers at school, but it wasn't important stuff so I didn't worry about it much. Then last night I was unable to FTP to the server in my office which freaks me out a bit. I really need to figure out what the heck is going on, but it definitely won't happen this weekend. Today is going to be a blow off day (for the most part) and tomorrow will be my usual catch up on all the stuff that needs to be finished before the week starts day. Eh, more later!

Ed Tech Dev blogs about a gradual switch to Open source with "some of the best free and open source applications". The apps listed include Mozilla, OpenOffice, The Gimp, XMMS (one of my favorites), MySQL, and PHP. Here's the article

My on campus wireless connection on the Linux side of the laptop is acting funky (or rather the authentification software that the university uses) and unfortunately I just don't have time to play with it right now! So I sit on campus and work on the Linux side if I have no need for online resources and on the Windoze side when I do. Maybe next week I can find the time to work with it. Oh well! :-(

Finally got my wireless card installed on my notebook and got the dang software required by the school working! I see more and more that I am gonna have to splurge and get a larger hard drive for this machine if I am going to continue to dual boot Windoze and RH! Can't give up windoze cuz I need it for work and I have a software modem so I need to be able to do dial up when I am outta town (unless I luck up on a hotel with broadband, and I actually look for those now).

Spent the afternoon pushing the idea of open source applications to public school administrators. Am I suggesting that they switch to Linux? Of course, but it will never happen, but they were intrigued by the concept of Live CDs and "applications to go".

I am totally wiped out. Maybe I'll write more about this later...maybe not.
