Hey, folks...

After much deliberation, we've determined that Writercon will not take place again. We had three great events because all of you were so awesome, and now the concom is ready to take a back seat and let others bring the great events of the future to fandom.

We're passing the torch, including what remains in our treasury of scholarship funding from at-con sales of t-shirts and raffle, to Wincon (New Orleans, October 13-16 2011), which, like Writercon, has made the leap from being a monofannish con to a gleefully multifandom one. We encourage those who want to help with programming to contact them.

Several of those of us you know from Writercon ConCom will be at Imagewincon this fall, and we hope to see you there!

ETA: Wincon's Welcome Post is up! Can't say enough good things about these fen - we know you are in good hands.

With much affection,
Your Writercon Con Committee

PS: If the dates or location of WinCon don't work for you, here are some other cons of potential interest for Writercon peeps:
Geek Girl Con (Seattle, October 8-9),
Vividcon (Chicago, August 12-14),
Context (Columbus, August 26-28), and
Writercon UK (Coventry, August 5-7).

(If we missed your favorite con, please share in comments.)

New to WriterCon

I've only recently discovered writercon and I'm curious when the next one will be or if there will be one. I haven't seen any indication of it.

SGA series rewatch

One of the convention panels, "SGA as a Closed Canon", involved speculation about a possible rewatch community. During the con, I also had at least two people mention to me that they envy the vibrancy of the SGA fandom but haven't yet watched the show.

A new SGA series (re)watch community has just launched: Imagesga_rewind. Discussion of the first episode will begin this Saturday; please see the comm for additional details.

Tropes in action!

Remember that presentation about tropes?

Here's a great example!

And in this case, I have to say that it actually improves the show....

. . . but tonight Imageantennapedia and I were talking as we filled out our surveys, and we ended up brainstorming possible workshop/panel/roundtable ideas for next WriterCon! Since we're all fresh off this last one and still buzzing about it, I thought it might not be too early to see what everyone else was thinking. The survey does this as well, but of course we can't see each other's survey answers.

The ideas we came up with were the following:

1) Fandom-specific small group fic workshops: Groups of 4-5 people sign up ahead of time and exchange a short-ish (~5k) piece of fanfiction to workshop at a specific time during the con. There could be a special one for drabbles, perhaps, or special ones for kink or porn.

2) A panel/workshop on how to give/receive constructive criticism. I think this should be held prior to the fic workshops, and people attending the fic workshops should be strongly encouraged to attend this panel.

3) A panel on co-writing, with sets of co-writers who could talk about how they found each other, how they work together, what sorts of projects they do together, etc.

4) A discussion/workshop on point of view and how it impacts the story.

5) More technical workshops like the podfic panel, particularly on graphics (icons, manips, banners) or website design. We writers often depend on others for these things, but it'd be cool to be able to do it ourselves!

So! What do you think it would be neat to see at WriterCon 2011?

Writercon..... other events

I expect i will be wrapped over the knuckles for this but if anyone that attended Writercon wants info on Phauxcon then check my personal posts...

(sorry mods - feel free to chastise me and include me as an innocent victim is Spuffy Fic!!)
