First off I am sure I could write a book by now to talk about these pencils, However I will try to keep my review to a few important points. I have also included some pictures to demonstrate what these pencils are capable of. I am no Picasso by any stretch of the imagination but I can produce a decent doodle here and there and it will help give an idea of what you are ordering. So here it goes!!
Point #1 - The pigment in these pencils are amazing !!
These are not your dollar store variety pencils. I used to do black and white pencil drawings in the past and was always hesitant to go color because of my experiences with cheap pencils. While the price on these pencils initially took me back I can see now they are worth every penny. The colors explode off of the paper and the finished drawings are bright and vibrant.
Point #2 - The colors can be blended!!
If there is a color you want and it is not in the box or if you are looking to smoothly transition from one color to the next this is doable by simply blending the colors. Blending can be achieved by layering the colors and then blending them together using a colorless blender. The best colorless blender I have used is right here PRISMACOLOR PREMIER Pencil Blender, Colorless Blender № PC1077, 2-Carded, Colourless (962)I have tried several different ones and this one works for me the best.
Point # 3 - These are wax based and they are soft so be careful !!
The core of these pencils are wax based and are also soft. Running your finger across one will almost make you think more of a crayon than a pencil. They are also easily cracked inside the casing if you drop them, especially on a hard surfaced floor. When this happens the tips tend to fall off when you sharpen them. So handle with some TLC and you will be fine.
Point # 4 - These pencils do not hold a sharp tip for long !!
This goes back to point #3, while you can sharpen these to a needle point tip it will not stay that way for long. The soft wax core will erode to a round top as you use it. This is not to say they will wear out quickly as I have found that these pencils do last a long time. If you need a needle tip on the pencil for ultra fine detail then these are the pencils I recommend PRISMACOLOR VERITHIN Pencil, Artist Quality Hard Thin Lead Pencils, Box of 36, Assorted Colours (2428)
Point #5 - You will go through some pencils faster than others !!
As seen in my pictures you will see some pencils that are far more worn down than others. This is simply because certain colors will be in more demand. If you picture includes lots of skies or waters then it is only reasonable that your blues will disappear faster than your oranges. It helps to have a store where you can buy single pencils to replace the ones you go through the most.
Overall conclusion !!
I love these pencils, it has reignited my interest in drawing. They are amazing quality and are able to produce amazing work. These pencils in the right hands would be capable of creating mind blowing pieces of art. Just keep in mind some of the advice above and I am sure you will love these pencils.
