If you're following me on X / Twitter (@memory_fallen) for my posts about reverse engineering retro games, check out RINGS OF SATURN, my Substack blog. Each week I take apart different games and report my findings.
Medal of Honor Underground does its best to hide the strings it uses as cheat passwords. Instead of storing them in plaintext, it only keeps the CRC32 checksums of them.
I made a script that does a meet-in-the-middle attack against the checksums. It reveals passwords for some previously unreported cheat effects! These enable special items in multiplayer mode, grant unlimited ammunition, allows enemies to damage each other, and more.
Details on how the password system works are in the Substack article.
15 years ago, a GameShark hacker discovered a hidden debug mode for the PlayStation version of Impact Racing. He posted fragmentary information about how to access it online before disappearing.
I decided to go looking for this feature in the Saturn version of the game. I found it, along with a durable method for accessing it. I've made a patch that makes it available.
Get the patch at SegaXtreme and get the details about how it works on Substack.
Kinetica for PlayStation 2 shares lots of code with other games from SCE Santa Monica, like God of War and God of War II. The cheat sites have things listed for those games, but not for Kinetica. Are there any that got overlooked?
Answer: yes! I found an "unlock everything" cheat for this game that seems to have gone unnoticed for the last 25 years. It give you access to all seasons, all characters, all tracks, and the bonus movie.
Details are over on Substack.
