C2 Detection Workshop

Shout-out to all the students who attended our C2 Detection for Threat Hunting last week hosted by Arturo Yundt-Pacheco!

We learned the techniques and tactics attackers use to control and communicate with compromised machines, and how to stop them in their tracks!

Threat Intelligence Workshop

Thank you for attending our Threat Intelligence workshop last ̶l̶a̶s̶t̶ Thursday, hosted by BJ Anderson!

We explored how the pros use threat intelligence to identify, track, and hunt down hackers. And provided members hands-on practice to jump-start their careers in hunting the bad guys.

Join us tomorrow at 7:00pm to learn how Honeypots and Honeynets are used and deployed in corporate networks to trick and trap attackers!

OSINT for Threat Hunting

Last Thursday, we hosted our OSINT (Open Source Intelligence) for Threat Hunting workshop led by Celina Rodriguez!

Students learned all about real-world methodologies and used their skills in a mock investigation to gather intel. We went over:

  • What is OSINT and the common misconceptions regarding it
  • Tools, techniques, and methodologies
  • Maltego for charting your investigations
  • Our mock investigation, which covered everything from social media profiling, geolocation, Google dorking, repository and metadata analysis, cloud, and archival web OSINT.
  • How to go further with OSINT from joining OSINT communities and trying the many available CTF’s and OSINT exercises available online

Thank you to all the students who attended, we'll see you text week!

Threat Hunting with SIEMs

Thank you to everyone who showed up to our Threat Hunting with SIEMs workshop!

We explored the fundamentals of threat hunting and SIEMs while giving students a hands-on, safe environment to work with real-world malware.

Students practiced parsing network traffic with Zeek, analyzed data with Malcolm, learned how to create custom Suricata rules, and discovered the value of Sigma rules in modern detection engineering.

Our next workshop is this Thursday at 7:00 pm. See y'all there!

Linux Fundamentals

Thank you to the awesome students who joined us for the Linux Fundamentals session this Saturday, hosted by BJ Anderson!

We explored the foundations of operating systems, introduced popular Linux distributions, and got hands-on with Linux commands, helping students get that initial foothold into their cyber careers.

Network Fundamentals for Threat Hunting

Thank you for attending the Network Fundamentals for Threat Hunting Workshop that Avi Bagchi led last Thursday! With a total of 85 attendees, this workshop was an absolute success!

The goal of this workshop was to cover the essentials of computer networking and help students detect malicious traffic out of many benign entries. We covered some of the most important and common networking protocols, what services they support, the OSI layers they function on, and how they can be exploited. Finally we let students put their skills to test with a live hands-on demo/practice session.

We're Official: CDRU is Now a Texas Nonprofit!

We're excited to announce a huge milestone for our organization: we are now officially recognized as a Texas nonprofit corporation! This achievement marks a significant step toward our mission to train the next generation of cyber defenders!

What This Means

As a registered nonprofit, we're better positioned to expand our efforts to:

  • Expand our educational outreach
  • Secure funding and partnerships
  • And provide more resources to you!

Thank you!

We never imagined when we started just a year ago, we'd be here. It wouldn't be possible without our members and officers!
