Shaping the Future
Human First: Faith, Literacy, and AI in Catholic Education
In a rapidly changing world shaped by artificial intelligence, literacy demands, and shifting cultural landscapes, Catholic educators are called to lead with clarity, courage, and creativity. Drawing on Fr. Michael Baggot’s perspective that AI should enhance, not replace, human wisdom, this conference explores how technology can deepen understanding, sharpen discernment, and support meaningful learning rooted in truth. We will also examine literacy as a foundational skill for navigating both digital and brick-and-mortar classrooms while embracing “boots-on-the-ground” faith practices suited for an apostolic era. These sessions will inspire educators to form students who are not only academically capable, but spiritually grounded, mission-oriented, and equipped to flourish in a world that urgently needs disciples who think deeply, communicate clearly, and live their faith boldly.
Keynote Speaker
Matthew Harvey Sanders
A significant voice in Catholic digital leadership is joining us. Matthew Harvey Sanders will be the keynote speaker for the Catholic Educators Conference in 2026. He leads Longbeard and directs the teams behind Magisterium AI, Vulgate AI, and the Christendom App.
-
In this session, Matthew Harvey Sanders explores the rapidly changing landscape of artificial intelligence and its implications for Catholic education and the mission of the Church. Drawing from current developments in AI, global trends, and emerging ethical questions, he highlights how technology is reshaping communication, decision making, and learning while inviting educators to reflect on what remains uniquely human, spiritual, and mission driven in our vocation.
Matthew outlines major stages of AI development, the accelerating impact of intelligent systems on society, and the opportunities and disruptions facing schools. Participants will consider how AI can support learning, expand access, and personalize education, while also examining the risks of bias, depersonalization, and the erosion of human judgment if technology is not guided by strong moral frameworks.
The session also explores the role of the Church in this shifting landscape and how Catholic tradition, social teaching, and the synodal call to listen and discern can inform our approach to new technologies. From digital communication to evangelization tools, from ethical guardrails to practical classroom applications, Matthew invites educators to consider how AI can be integrated thoughtfully, faithfully, and creatively in service of human dignity. Ultimately, he encourages Catholic educators to lead with wisdom and courage, embracing innovation without losing sight of our mission to form hearts and minds in truth, compassion, and hope.
