Hey guys, really sorry for the unplanned hiatus. I know, it's not like me to suddenly disappear without saying anything. Well actually it sort of is and sort of isn't. I've been here eight years now and in the first five years or so I would sometimes have longer breaks away from dA, often over the summer. But the last 2-3 years I've had more responsibilities and commitments and it's not a fair thing to do. Even when I've been busy I've at least checked in and kept on top of anything urgent - or, when I've known I'm going to be away, I've notified my groups in advance and made arrangements.

So what happened this time? Well first of all work got really busy, which set me back for a week or two, but it wasn't a big deal, I was going to log in and catch up. But then suddenly my grandma went into hospital and I had to get a flight down to where my parents live to go and see her. It wasn't a great time - she died in the nursing home that she was in, and then there was the funeral - I was down south for over 2 weeks in the end and of course it was all totally unplanned, I literally dropped everything and got on the next flight I could. And didn't know when I left that I was going to be there for so long. The last week or two I've been catching up with everything else including work whilst knowing in the back of my mind you guys deserved an update but not being able to face the backlog. Sorry about that :(

I'll do my best to get caught up with messages/comments first then catch up with things in my devwatch. I'll take care of the group stuff as well but I'll talk about that on the group blog - that update will come within the next hour.

I know there were a bunch of you who were worried about me and I'm really sorry about that. I didn't mean to disappear without warning, it was all very sudden :hmm: Sorry again :(

As some of you - particularly the older members - will know, I run PresentsFromSanta and have organised a massive secret Santa through that group for the past three years. For several reasons I can't do that this year.

But!

Pepper-Dragon has persuaded me to run a mini secret Santa via Artcrossing. Because you're all awesome. And I love you. And I know you will all make amazing gifts for amazing people and not let me down. (She is also going to be helping me with the organisation, so we will be running this together. Thanks Pepper-Dragon!)

However, having said that we have a lot of newbies in the group too and I think I should mention before you get any further that this is only going to be open to active and reliable members. You have to have sent at least five gifts that have been received to participate. (See at the bottom for full details of how to check.)

Sorry if you feel this criterium is too strict but if I didn't have it there I wouldn't be running this at all. I really just want to open this up to those people I already know are dependable; it's really easy for people to overcommit themselves at this time of year even if they mean well. Artcrossing is entirely built round the "send something before you receive something" concept, which means that if you have to cancel you haven't let anyone down; if you cancel in a secret Santa, you are getting something for nothing and your partner is making something and not receiving. So I am just being on the safe side here. The normal part of Artcrossing will continue as usual and the rest of you can still join in that - this is just a "project on the side" for our more active members.

Well that's all the killjoy stuff over and done with! :D

Here are a few more things you should know.
  • Partners will be assigned entirely randomly. I have a program that'll do that for me. Who you get is who you get!
  • Your secret Santa will be given your usual Artcrossing profile and address. If you want to make an additional wishlist for Christmas, you can put one in a journal and give us the link to it (not now - more on that later!) and that will be passed to your secret Santa in addition to your profile.
  • Unlike normal Artcrossing gifts, secret Santas will be given the username of the person they're making a gift for. For obvious reasons the recipient won't be given the name of the Santa until it's all finished!
  • You need to be certain you can commit to this if you sign up for it. If for some reason an emergency happens, then of course let us know and I'll do my best to sort it out, but barring emergencies I want this to go as smoothly as possible.
  • It's up to you how early you send the gift, but if you aim to get it finished in a couple of weeks you should have plenty of time for it to arrive even if it's over the other side of the world. That'll probably also give you some emergency time in case it turns into a bigger project than you expected or you're delayed for some reason. Remember the mail takes much longer at Christmas time.
So if you want to sign up:
  • Comment below by 11 November saying you want to sign up.
  • If you want to make an additional wishlist like I talked about, make sure to do that too: put it in a journal somewhere and give us the link (not yet - I'll post another journal telling you when). Your Santa doesn't have to follow the wishlist - if they're stuck they can just use your profile - but I'm sure they'll bear it in mind if they can accommodate it at all!

________

Do I qualify?

Go here and check your "Gifts sent" total.
Image
If it's 5 or more, you can participate.

There is one special case, and that's anyone who participated in the "gifts for no return" thing in January/February 2011, as these gifts won't be included in your totals. If you think that might be you, talk to me about it.

Apart from that, if you don't have 5 or more gifts sent, you don't qualify I'm afraid. Keep sending normal Artcrossing gifts and don't let it put you off! There are loads of other secret Santas out there :D

Spirit Day 2012

10 min read
If you don't know about Spirit Day, read this article. It's an annual event (this year on October 19th) to spread awareness for LGBT issues, in particular suicides among LGBT teens caused by bullying that they face because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

It's an American thing originally but websites like deviantART have spread the awareness across the globe and I don't see why the rest of us can't "wear purple" too. My page is purple all over at the moment =p

Here are some positive deviations to spread the message that you are not alone. I am also working on my own submission to promote the message. I don't think it will be up before the end of Spirit Day, but this isn't a campaign with a time limit. These are issues affecting teenagers every day.

I also currently have a folder on my dA page today promoting more general LGBT issues (less purple lol).

This article also addresses some issues that I think we should all be aware of. Especially the part about addressing your own prejudices. We all have prejudices. Yes, even you.

:bulletpurple: Lots of people "support gay rights" but in actual fact have prejudices of their own that get in the way of truly helping equality. Someone who is gay is not just a "gay person", but a PERSON. A person who happens to be gay. As LiliWrites said, these are simple ideas to understand, but it is easy to let ourselves get caught up in categorizing people instead of knowing them.

:bulletpurple: If you think "of course I support gay rights, I like yaoi/yuri art!" think again. For a start, a lot of this work tends to objectify the people involved. There is more to being gay than gay sex; there is love, commitment and relationships - and yes, one night stands too! - in fact everything that straight people have. Lust and love. And for another thing, it's demeaning. Imagine a plantation owner in 1950s America saying something like, "I just think it's so cute when y'all see them niggers rutting right there in the field!" Derogative, right? Now if it's a fangirl saying something similar about how awesome yaoi is. See my point?

:bulletpurple: Gay? Proud? Annoyed with all those "bisexuals" who are secretly straight and just want the attention that comes from being LGBT?
... Wait a minute. Biphobia exists too and often as not comes from the very members of the community they're meant to be a part of. Noticing that you have a prejudice yourself is a key step in working towards ending intolerance.

:bulletpurple: And yes, there are the transgenders. In all the support we show for the rest of the LGBT community, let's not forget those who are fighting against the very bodies they were born in. I can't even begin to imagine going through something like this as a teenager. And what's more I think there's a huge amount of ignorance on the subject. Myself included. Here is just one deviation showing misunderstanding on our (cissexual people's) part.

Submit your own deviations to the deviantART Spirit Day folder here.

:new: Chat event will start from 20:30 British time and last until midnight.
That's a start time of 21:30 for Europe, 12:30 USA West Coast, 15:30 USA East Coast or find your time zone here.
Just over three hours from now :)

As of today (13th August) we are re-opened for join requests. So if you're watching us but haven't joined yet this is the perfect time :) We do not accept blank join requests, so please read this blog first for all the information we need. In particular, please read the profile guide when writing your profile. If you don't have much time, you can just read the "The Basics" and "Address" sections, or if you really don't have much time then just answer the questions in the "Out of ideas?" bit and the "Address" bit.

Send art requests are now opened again but only for anyone who is already a member. If you joined in August, please wait and do not send a note asking to make a gift for someone as I will just delete it and tell you to reapply later. Do make sure you read this blog before sending in your note! (You can find this link along with several other useful ones on the top left of the main Artcrossing page.)

Be aware also that there is still a slight delay in receiving a profile. It might take a week and a half rather than half a week, for example.

Chat room

:alientwo:
A while back I made a chat room for the group on request, but it never really took off. Now that the group is much bigger I thought it was time to revive it. Since there are lots of new faces around here lately, our first chat event is going to be a Getting to Know You session and it will be on Saturday 18 August. There will be trivia, profile brainstorming and opportunities to win :points:!

The tentative time will be 8 p.m. - midnight GMT. (That's four hours, starting from noon PST/3 p.m. EST/9 p.m. Paris/7 a.m. next day New Zealand or find your time zone here.) I'll give you an updated start time in a day or two's time :) Hopefully you can pop along for at least some of that time. - See above

I'm also planning on several other chat events in the near future, including
  • Brainstorming sessions (if you're stuck on a profile and don't know what to make)
  • How to workshops
  • I wish someone would gift me this but hasn't yet (even though it's defined in my profile)
  • Help me write a good profile!
If you have any ideas for chat events you'd like to see, please share!

Moderating

The chat room could use some more moderators. For the most part, this will just involve keeping an eye on things, making sure people aren't spamming and so on. But we could also use some people to host some of the events. If you think you can help with any of the above events, please send in a note. Brainstorming, profile help, etc. will be limited to those who have been here for six months or more and have sent at least five gifts (though of course everyone can participate in the actual discussion in the chat), but new people with excellent ideas for events they would like to host are also very welcome to send in a note about it.

If you have an idea for an event you'd like to attend but not host, feel free to share in the comments too :)

If you're sending in a note about moderating the chat room, please title it clearly "Chat moderator application" to make it easier for me to sort notes. Thanks!
